  • come check out my forehnad and maybe give me some advice how to improve it will make my day :)

  • I love federer soo much!!!!!!! I play tennis too and his form is so clean and solid. He is so smooth when he hits the ball and he shows no emotion.

  • i love his form ! Federer is the best for me ^^

  • @Wickedman526 forgetting one more no?

  • Elegant, Powerful, Precise, Devastating... Master absolved from the tennis !

  • what's the grip his using? *_* please reply asap i'm going to report about tennis in our P.E.

  • @theElvenfairy

Federer uses a eastern forehand grip for his forehand. I guess that's the grip he is using in this shot in the video.

  • Look at how still his head is the whole time. It's as if it has been stuck on.

  • You just watched Perfection

  • If there was some epic music in the backround this video would be perfect

  • DAT forehand!

  • look at the concentration and how he keeps his eyes on the ball.

  • Living legend

  • The only reason his back hand is considered a weakness is because his forehand is God-like.

  • If you pause at the right time, at 0:18 the ball deforms, looked like it sunk into the racquet during the impact :).

  • well, the technique is as good as it get´s, along with the great plow through he get´s on it as well..

  • They should just delete all forehand slow motion videos and replace them with Roger's.

  • Federers forehand is sick!!

Tried copying him as a kid, watch my latest vid and see if you can tell

  • once did that and the ball returned to me in to parts

  • Holy crap! Y is his left hand all skinny?!?!

  • Federer é fodelão!

  • Why does he allways hit topspin ???

  • federer doesnt come to the ball ... the ball comes to him

  • if there is a perfect style , that is it

  • you can see the biomechnical chain perfectly...

  • Optimumtennis . net for free roger federer forehand analysis

  • Just... wow.. perfect, nothing said

  • @federerbestcIass Did u say Rafa!?!?

  • well....we all must admit that it is just like our tennis classes told us to do....fuck...

  • search "John Reed Tennis" for more great tips and examples from kids

  • Just perfect!

  • Federer's forehand and Nadal's forehand are complete opposites.

  • The peak of genius is here; AO2007 was one of the greatest single tournament performances ever.

  • This video will get removed because our Mortal eyes aren't good enough for this.

  • perfection.

  • My forehand is better

  • U should check Henin Topspin forehand slowmotion they have like EXACT same focus on the ball pretty amazing the forehand is much more similar to the one of Henin then the backhand:))

  • his eyes never leave the ball until it contacts the racquet. he's so composed and focused...

  • @rayn888

Yes. And he never looks up until the racket is almost behind his head.

  • his left hand is like a twig.....

  • sick

  • if you want to become a great tennis player, go to my channel (2knowfun2) and watch my two videos: World class tennis (part1/2) and (part2/2) . I have covered pretty much everything (the important things) about tennis in my two videos..Now you don't have to watch every single coaching video out there because you have everything in my two videos...

Watch my (two) videos and you will know how to become a great match player.

  • I think he uses an eastern grip--not semi western.

  • is Federer semi- western???

and wow! he has so much confidence dat he doesnt even look at the ball after hitting it! hahaha

  • @16888ocean

Actually, it's a biomechanical matter; you want to keep looking at the ball and then to your contact point and keep focus on this until your motion is completed. Your head can throw you off balance if you do not keep your eyes there and you may loose focus onto the matter of the game - the yellow ball.

Freeze frame at 0:18. He's a rare player who looks straight at contact point, but it's not the idea of looking there.

  • i love his form and i use it to

  • @jingwah You must have impressive hand-eye coordination! I have tried it on occassions but I can't seem to hit consistently with it - though admittedly it feels AWESOME when it connects :)

  • You can see how fast his arm accelerates just a few seconds just before the racket contacts the ball. An interesting pointer to any people practicing tennis, as the fast acceleration allows the arm to travel up towards the shoulder faster, and thus creating a much more dangerous top-spin.

  • its called he knows his timing unlike u-_-

  • im talkin to coldra1

  • Seemes so epic.

  • does anyone have any tips for my forehand on my videos?

  • its too perfect!!! im blinded!!

  • @tennisofhoyoungwon no your just gey -_-

  • One of the reasons why his follow through looks different from other players is that he is using an Eastern (some call it semi-Western) grip while simultaneously hitting more of a "windshield wiper" motion.

You end up with a hybrid between the two: not quite as "windshield wiper" as many of the pro players these days such as Djokovic, and not quite as much straight follow through as the classic forehand a la Sampras.

You get the best of both worlds.

  • people dont call the eastern grip a semi-western

    they are 2 different grips

  • OK.

  • Yes, but it also means you got hell of a problem off high balls. If you're athletic and have flexible joints, if you pay attention to having a very good technic, it can be done.

However, if you are like many people, even people in very good shape and very good at many sports, if you don't have this ease with jumping and stretching yourself, it will be hard to hit well off high balls.

I must agree that if you can do it, it can hardly get more aggressive.

  • There are many many many very tiny details this player makes you have to pay attention to in order to get all those different forhand swings right with that classical grip and that modern spin...

It is not necessarily the ideal for every player.

  • Yes, too many details that go into this shot to describe in a concise YT comment.

Not many (or no one at all) can copy his FH to achieve the same results, but nonetheless, the values that can be learned from his FH can inspire a whole new generation of tennis players.

There are numerous player on YT alone that already try to apply his form and learn from his example.

  • I did tried to take his example... It works quite fine, but it took me hundreds and hundreds of strokes and hours of viewing to get an idea of which elements were the key components and what had to be changed in my swing.

I do look like a bit like him, but I do not twist my motion in all ways to be looking like Roger - the best thing you can get out of his forehand is how natural and loose he is. Swing and let it go and you will see someday what is a powerful shot - it will be your stroke.

  • Exactly. Never try to copy only the look of a stroke. Try to understand how, when, from where the player is generating power. If you can do that and apply it, then your stroke will look like theirs naturally.

I agree "natural and loose" is how anyone should hit, if they are comfortable with their motion. That's another reason people should learn from the principles of other players' power generation-not merely the look.

  • The simplest way for me (so far) to describe Fed's forehand power generation principles:

    Use short backswing,

    Use TRUNK to DRAG arm,

Use toes (either is fine depending if closed or open stance) as pivot or COUNTERPOINT,

Totally STOP trunk to transfer energy to arm,

Accelerate arm and wrist late just before contact to ball,

Make contact with ball way in front of body,

Keep eye glued to ball and contact point,

    Follow through.

  • go go go..!!!!

  • Try throwing something as far as you can with accuracy you will end up with the same motion as the guys mentioned below. the same principle applies with trying to hit a tennis ball as hard as you can, but with accuracy. There is a reason why all other sports use this method in their throwing or hitting technique. Federer,Nadal,Verdasco,Del Potro, all forehands in the game today who use this technique.

  • When players serve they begin with a bent arm then straighten out on impact with the ball for added power and accuracy, this is the same method the top guys use but incorporate it in their forehands. All professional throwing and hitting sports use the same method (badminton, baseball, golf, javerlin etc...) they all use the same motion. (bent arm to straighten arm) If these pros use a bent arm when throwing or hitting on impact they will lose some power and accuracy.

  • Federer uses a straight arm on impact with the ball, the only other pros on tour who use this method of hitting a forehand is Nadal, Verdasco, Del Potro, and these guys hit the forehand with more power and accuracy than most in my epinion.

  • ya but you have to snap youre wrist right b4 contact

  • You don't move the wrist; it's a consquence of your arm moving. You do let it loose behind, but as your arm gets passed a certain angle, it starts going sidways, but your hand must continue forward (newton's first law) until it is dragged laterally. From this moment, it starts whipping.

But, it's not a direct movement.

  • @GueorguiJoukov you lead with ure hip into the shot and then let ure arm drag back

  • he's very skinny is his arms!

this must help his acceleration when hitting the ball...he is very "wristy"

  • Federer should patent his strokes!

  • Doesnt matter. No ones good enough to copy that!

  • @tim818 haha nah no one is good enough to copy it

  • @tim818 lol how many major have you won?

  • @tim818

there's no need to patent his strokes.

no one else can do it

  • @tim818 you don't need to patent something that can't be copied

  • PERFECT! Only one question; how can the absorb the shock if it's vibrating like crazy?

  • at that speed you cant feel/notice the vibration.

  • Well you can, but unless you hit it off center it feels "correct"

  • game,set and match.roger federer

    !!!!

  • wow

  • perfect!

  • hes just so unbelievably compact. no extra motion, his body isn't all over the place. There's nothing flashy to his forehand, but again, its so compact, and so concise, that its truly a great shot. its like the brazilians in soccer. They are very good at every basic step that they can pull off amazing moves

  • Comment removed

  • It's debatable whether Federer has the best forehand in tennis.

What's unique is 2 things: 1) his head remains still throughout the shot & even after completion of the stroke. This helps consistency & stability. 2) He whips his wrist (switching from the butt of the racket to the head) just before striking, which creates a rubberband effect and increases racket head speed just before contact. The tactic is flexible; u can flatten or put topspin on the ball, depending on racket face closure.

  • What's even more amazing is his concentration. He watches the ball the whole way through the swing.. I'd say very few do that. Most gage where the ball is going to be then swing. He watches it into the racqet!

  • Sampras, best forehand ever, so flat but unbelievably accurate. Agassi, best returner ever.

  • Sampras best running forehand ever. But I'd have to say Federer gets the title of best standing forehand ever.

Agassi best standing return ever. I'd have to say Federer is better returning at full stretch.

  • His wrist looks immobile, can you elaborate more on this?I've been researching pronation a lot and it's interesting.

  • @BWpepperr, part of the wrist is immobile. You will notice that the wrist flexion remains the same. However, the motion of the racket swivels along the perpendicular axis of the wrist bend. Picture the hand moving counter-clockwise along the clock face. The wrist remains locked but the range motion is fluid along the perpendicular axis.

It's this range of motion that provides the whipping action and produces tremendous racket head speed just before and during ball contact.

  • @dparad22 - so does that mean federer accelerates his racket faster than others before contact to get the "whip" motion?

  • @BWpepperr - yes. Federer's acceleration is faster than most, making his forehand one of the best.

  • It's down to his swing technique and follow through. He hits the ball at a higher point and turns his body through it. This causes the elbow to bend naturally follow through much lower than a normal forehand. Look up windshield wiper forehands

  • I know what they are good man. I use one myself. though I've changed to a straight arm for more power. I know that most pro's use double bend forehand.

  • If Federer does it, why would it be bad?

No pro players have a formal (conventionnal if you prefer) Windshield wiper. Always a variation to it. Federer is a great example of that, perhaps even the best example.

Look at the swing path and follow-through. Very similar to a Windshield wiper. But, he finishes way higher and uses a more diagonal burshing path than most pros with bent elbows.

A weird, but effective mixture of classical and modern forehands, Federer's FH is a pure beauty.

  • I agree but if you watch Roddick, then you will see that he has an extreme windshield wiper forehand. For a long time I had roddicks follow through but it was too difficult to control the direction of the ball. It seemed to almost always go straight

  • If Federer does it, it's probably not that bad.

No seriously, you're right about the classic forehand blend with modern forehand.

He has the advantage of being able to hit flat effectively with Eastern grip (some say semi-western, I say whatever) but the motion allows him to be able to hit topspin too unlike the straighter stroke of the classical forehand.

    Best of both worlds.

  • Federer's forehand is undoubtly the best shot ever played by any sportman in any sport!

  • I like Laver's backhand the most - pure beauty and power.

  • Kilger's 106mph slap shot in Leaf's camp in 2006 wasn't bad too! ALthough he didn't acomplished anything, he got a solid there!

Raymond Bourque has legendary accuracy and that's how A defensemen hit 411 goals in career!

Nolan Ryan's fastball was quite a thing to see too.

But, I have to give him the best shot in tennis and he surely overtake any other player i nany other sport at anytime when it comes to gracefulness.

  • Sampras serve.

    Need I say more?

There a good reason why when people think serve, people automatically think Sampras.

  • @miltyu97

What the people think is not valuable, nor a proof of anything in any way. They gat amazed by little and marvel at some styles; most of them doesn't have an idea about what makes a serve efficient...

Consider Sampras' game and the courts he was playing on; you needed to play a passing shot off the return... This kind of enhance many stats.

It helps everything about it because his aggressive game made player cheat a bit on position, get little nearer, etc.

  • I'm sorry I missed your point.

Were you saying Sampras's serve is overrated because the surfaces were faster during the 90's?

Because if that's what you're saying, I disagree. There were significantly faster serves in the 90's than Sampras's, so speed's obviously not why Sampras's serve is uniformly (by both the laymen you discount and experts) considered the best.

Considering consistency, reliability, disguise, accuracy, variety, and especially BIOMECHANICS Sampras's serve is the best.

  • I explained you how a serve, like Sampras', can look so amazing.

What I tried to explain you is that we cannot consider that his serve was necessarily in direct relation with his serving stats, in a first time, because of his game play and, in a second time, because of the faster surfaces.

I had a problem with your justification because you mentionned "people" and I tried to explain you that an aggressive game help your serve as much as a good serve helps your game.

  • Oh I see. No. I was only referring to the serve itself, not his entire attacking game (which is phenomenal, but that's a different story).

Like I said his serve is the best not in terms of mph or kmph only but because of:consistency, reliability, disguise, accuracy, variety, and especially BIOMECHANICS.

yodavidnavarro said fed's fh is the best shot in any sport, and I nominated Sampras's serve to be the best shot in tennis.

  • biomechanically, I would argue that Federer seems quite more relaxed and is surely more energy efficient and I couldsurely speak of Roddick being more explosive.

  • You're comparing Fed's FH to Pete's serve now? OK.

Yes, Fed's FH is efficient and no one would argue it's not elegant.

But I'd argue service motions in general require far more athleticism than forehands.

And of the more athletic motion, Pete's serve is the most relaxed, efficient, and elegant service motion.

He has the highest spin/speed ratio of any other serve (credit to his efficient power generation and technique) and he did so the most fluidly and relaxed way.

  • No, I meant Federer's serve. I have to tell you that Federer is certainly more efficient, even on the serve. I do not compare both serves saying that Federer's is better; I was talking of energy efficiency.

And for spin, Roddick's serve has about 100rpm lesser than Pete's, but goes some 5-10mph faster. These are not estimations; here are your numbers:

    Pete: 2500rpm/130mph

    Roddick: 2400/138mph

The experienced was carried out with 14 serves of each players. All first serves.

  • Pete: 2500rpm/130mph

    Roddick: 2400/138mph:

Yeah that's the study I was talking about too-which shows Pete has higher spin/speed ratio.

Pete's serve is definitely more energy efficient than Rog's.

Due to increased flexibility, Pete gets better leverage angles.

Due to better technique, he gets more energy transfer from the trunk to the arm which...

Facilitates more pronation of the arm and gives him both faster serves and higher spin.

  • Furthermore, w/ the increased popularization of the internet (and YouTube) and pop mass-appeal of today's players, I'd argue the same as what you said of the players in the 90's for today's players:

Namely that people are even MORE apt to "get amazed by" the glitz "style" and hype due to internet sensationalizing and peer pressure to like the popular player.

Recall Sampras wasn't most popular at all-he was regarded as boring & unshowmanly & YET STILL regarded as having the best serve.

  • Sampras's serve was the most dominant. He cruised on his serve. Very similar technique to Federer but slightly more power and accuracy. Every other shot of Federer's is better than Sampras's.

  • I'm sorry.

Sampras' serve was very different, not only to Federer's, but to any other serve.

Sampras's results were more dominant, but simply looking at his biomechanics, his serve was very different. He had amazing flexibility first of all that allowed for greater range of movement and better leverage. He also had much more trunk rotation and the best pronation for racket head speed of all time that produced the highest ratio of spin and pace than any other serve. Studies have been done on it

  • that was a top spin

  • I do love watching his beautiful forehands, very unique and very artistic.

  • the beauty of tennis ............

  • also The Best of tennis xD

  • look at how at 0:13-16, his raquet actually deforms.

  • Optical illusion + fast movement = 'deformation'

    Federer's the greatest... EVER!

  • well spotted.

  • nop..it's eastern..watch carefully at his heel pad which located at 3rd pebble of the tennis grip it's a Eastern for sure

  • pebble LMAO its bevel

  • Don't worry too much about grips. The grip you use should be more dependent on what angle of the racquet face you make contact with and what is comfortable for you.

  • Is Federer hitting a windshield wiper forehand?

  • Yes

  • that's semi western grip.

  • pure tennis.

  • フェデラーのこのスイング。とにかくキレイですよね。テニスの経験のない人が見てもフォームがキレイに見えます。

This federers forehand・・. Its simply "beautiful", isn't it? Even a person with no experience in tennis feels it's beauty.

  • nice slomo can i polot u idol? pls luge3 me diri sa poloty 2o lang taga game

  • bisakol amf

  • is he doing a windshield wiper forehand?

  • yes

  • nice shot

  • Mutating elbow at 0.25s :S

  • yeah ouch

  • Federology = Study of Federer's tennis strokes/serves.

  • Federal = Everything Federer everywhere.

  • Nadal = Nasal. (from you that is)

  • Federer has probably the best forehand in history enuff said. Nadal just beats him because he abuses his backhand with high balls and he just gets in his head, Federer has lost his belief now but i wish he could just get a god damn coach and stop relying on Mirka. He can beat Nadal man he just needs to convert on his 1235 break points and hit his god damn backhand return.

  • I know Federer can't get a GOD DAMN break of Nadal's GOD Damn serve. If Federer could just convert on one or two of those GOD DAMN chances, he would win the GOD DAMN match.

  • GODDAMMIT! lol!

  • Our wish has come true... I just read federer got a coach, It's Darren Cahill. This was released on 9th March. He is australian btw.

  • fail. he didn't, didn't even sign. please research your things.

  • Your right, I just got a bit excited it was just a 9 day thing or something like that. My bad.

  • first of all its not worse its worst. secondly you're forgetting that federer isnt in his prime and Nadal is. thirdly how can you say his forehand is bad?...His forehand is incredible. I'd like to see your forehand

  • Nadal has 6 grand slams and hes only 22 yrs old or was it 21. Federer didnt have as much grand slam wins as nadal did at 22 yrs old.

  • so if youre saying federer is the most technically flawless player, then whats nadal. hes just better than federer. i mean once federer retires theres really no one in nadals way to beat sampras's record.

  • dumbass, your arguments are utterly senseless.

  • Nadal started at a really young age i think 16? thats why he has 6 slams already federer got 6 slams in two years! 3/year with less injuries... wanna know whats going to stop nadal... his KNEES!! got injured against murray last night!

  • there is no doubt that nadal has a more solid game because of his style of play. however with the heavy toll on nadal's body, it's not certain that federer is going to retire before nadal... if federer so wishes, he can probably win a bunch of major double's titles in his 30's.

  • All i can say is that nadal beat him the last three meets they had and 709041 can say that it WAS ALL LUCK if he wants too. thts ur excuse

  • Federer won 13 grand slams i think he can handle pressure unlike you..

  • Cant be serious. Even under pressure, when Nadal supposedly had this cool mind, it took him 5 sets against someone who was playing poorly. reevaluate ur precious nadal please..

  • rofl yes the guy who has won 13 grand slams sucks under pressure.......

    you're a fucking dumbass

  • Federer plays precision tennis which leaves him with a small margin of error. Nadal however plays with so much margin because of the spin and angle of his shots. Its in Nadal's nature to be more solid during pressure moments. And what about the 2007 Wimbledon? I guess Federer wasn't under pressure during that final because he won in a cool 5 sets.

  • Are u serious. He has one the second most amount of Grand Slams under his belt, aswell as multiple records. Don't comment on something u know nothing about.

  • he has so many flaws when he faces nadal. he just gets real tight and starts missing

  • Ur a fucking idiot. He has been called one of the most technically flawless player in tennis history. He just does not feel comfortable playing Nadal because he attacks his only weakness. Ur a fucking dumbass.

  • there are so many flaws in his game

  • What, are you kidding me? His technique is flawless.

  • His technique is flawless but his ability to perform his flawless technique under pressure (normally against Rafael) is lacking.

  • you know who else has the same problem? EVERYBODY...you cant say someone has many flaws in there game just because they have a hard time playing "their" game against nadal...ITS FUCKING RAFAEL NADAL FOR CHRISTS SAKE...against all other players federer is almost flawless...of course, no one player is perfect

  • the sexiest forehand in history
