  • how did this not win the grammy? i honestly dont understand. streets of philadelphia is a really good song, but this fits the mood of the movie so much better. seems like theres just a bias to springsteen for some reason.

  • THIS should have been THE OSCAR WINNING SONG!

  • I will be here with you today......and as long as I'm here.

    I love this song.

  • I come here to understand...I come here to cry...I'm here.

  • @iggyover lmaooo I knew you was a sweet bitch...lmaoo crying like a fag... lmaoo typically pussy acting tough on other peoples videos and crying like a pussy everywhere else...hahahaha busted you fucking lame ass troll

  • @FLOSSYCARTER Sorry the let you down buddy but I like women so can't be your "sweet bitch"....and as I will mention on your other rant it was just a joke.....ease up on the roids man. Busted me for what?....being human?

  • Stunning that Springsteen and Neil created these masterpieces at the same time. They both deserved awards.

  • F1SR's F1 1994 mod for rFactor brought me here

  • flashplayer needed

  • and its even more sad when it shows andy's family and his baby pictures in the movie :( poor andy

  • I'm crying. I love this song.

  • Always thought this song was much better than 'Streets of Philadelphia'.

  • Neil Young AND Johnny Depp....oooh...lovely!

  • This song... this song

    ; )" that's all I can say.

  • I've never forgotten this incredible performance at the Oscar ceremony.

  • the saddest song i have ever heard,i love it, the love the world...

  • Kissaway Trail did it better.

  • The Master at his best. Thanks for posting

  • ...Very nice...

  • Jesus!

  • @MsChuckbert I couldn't agree with you more this song is one of the saddest in the world but the movie is also one of the saddest in the world and the song encapuslated it wonderfully

  • Wow Neil Young this is beautiful.

  • should've won oscar for this but it's kind of ironic he lost it, as in all the others who have lost a battle. That's for the youtube ppl who dont't get my 1st sentence.

  • my favourite Neil Young song

  • I'm french, and the fact is I was completly touched by this song even before I could understand the lyrics some years after (I'm now pretty fluent). This song was making me melancholic and it still does each time I listen to it

  • @i900frenchaddict

salut mec, je partage ton post ;)

  • why do some of us fall apart, think of old times, see new, just remember, feel completely different from the moment before hearing a song like this to after. It's not even about the "anything" about this song....it's just a feeling...a longing...it's inside you want to talk about. Weird..lovely.

  • 14 pessoas foram forçadas de morte a votar negativo

  • 13 people do not understand great music

  • imagine this was an audition for xfacor or american idol, he would be laughed off the stage...which would be so wrong.....this is real music and real talent

  • What a great tune . Never stood a chance against Bruce for so many stupid reasons

  • Great movie and just like Louis Armstrong singing "What a Wonderful World"..there is no other voice that can sing this song with the meaning intended. Beautiful!

  • @hickoryou812: Good point, Hick. A very few songs belong to the singer, and this is one. I guess it's the way Neil Young always sounded like he was about to crack out of tune on every song he sang. It kind of keeps you spell-bound and jumpy, but completely satisfied when the last note rings. Song after song.

  • obra maestra!!

  • Incredible

  • Piece of Art.I have never and will never understand why this song was so under rated. This is one of the most powerfull song I have ever heard. Thanks for that Neil.

  • unconditional love

  • It's a beautiful thing when we can accept each other as we are! Beautiful song Neil!

  • "I wont be ashamed of love.." Beautiful words in an incredibly beautiful song.. and does it ever fit the film perfectly.

  • someone knows why did bruce springsteen win the oscar?

  • Every time I watch the movie, "Philadelphia" or listen to this song I cry!.

  • When I was 2 years old my grandma died of cancer. I never really knew her but I do know that this was her favorite song. Everytime I listen to this song I always think of her and cry wishing I knew my grandma.

  • Is this the song that plays at the end of the movie!!

  • @fatizoo1000 Yes it is

    Rachel Quarrell

  • B-E-A-utiful, everytime I hear it!

  • 12 people have no souls

  • Comment removed

  • noone in philly knows this jawn

  • He does this live on the 'Silver & Gold' DVD - and someone shouts out: "SHOULD'AVE WON!!!" And Neil laughs and says: "It would have been there [the Oscar] Right there...[on the piano]"

  • Pero como se llama la cancion????

  • Beautiful

  • im going to watch this over and over till it gets to 1 million hits!

  • johnny depp hasnt changed much geez

  • Un bel film concluso da una canzone stupenda

  • Brilliant !

  • If you don't cry at the end of the movie Philadelphia, when this song comes on for the funeral....You're a robot.

  • I love Neil Young and I love this song so don't hate.. But I defy you to close your eyes and tell me this couldn't be Kermit The Frog singing..

  • such a beautiful tune that lacks the sound quality it deserves

  • This song is like a prayer it's so perfect in every way. I loved the scenes in the film where this song was played. A master piece from Neil as ever. X

  • back again today cos listening to this song yesterday has hang around my head all day!

  • In a crazy world that makes no sense, this beautiful song was overlooked at the Grammys in favour of bruce springstein version of streets of philadelphia.

  • Simply beautiful!

  • Love from France Neil. You've been the frienD going along for so many years... Was born in 1957.

  • Beautiful song

  • this song gives me goosebumps

  • this music sounds as if it was written a century ago

  • What a great tune .

  • one of the most under-rated songs ever pure genius

  • Neil was robbed!

  • this is one of the saddest songs in the world !

    I cry evertime...it's so beautiful...............

we're all the same, we should make our lives easier and not lie, hurt or kill each other.

  • @MsChuckbert I agree, well said

  • @MsChuckbert I like what you're saying. At the same time, I think it's pretty general to lump "we're all the same," into one category. We're all the same in a few key areas (wanting less suffering for ourselves, etc.) but we are really different too. I think we're a lot more different than a few key similarities. People can't handle the differences because they don't understand them or they have an opposing ego that offers no opportunity for change through a trained defense-mechanism response.

  • @MsChuckbert

Perfectly worded ... I still cry with this song to this very day. I think of everyone I lost when this song plays and it breaks me up. I so agree that "we should make our lives easier and not lie, hurt or kill each other".

  • @bxbomb69 thank you. and I'm really sorry for your losses:(.

  • @MsChuckbert ya...I watch it over and over to. It's a good feeling some days and others not so much..but I love it. Over and over .I understand. Love and always love.

  • @MsChuckbert , He sang it with so much feelings on it, I just keep on replaying it , love it!

  • I'm glad to see this song moved other ppl like it moved me.

  • WOW!!! this song is beautiful, his voice, the music, the words.

  • "City of brotherly love, the place I call home don't turn your back on me I don't want to be alone" God what a great line, it's so simple but yet in the context of the music it gets very emotional. This is a very haunting tune in every respect.

  • This was much better than the song f Bruce everybody knows that,Neil used magic to sing,it's touchin' and really is a work of a genius.Sorry Bruce, you're just another cowboy!

  • when i'm asleep(dreaming), this just could be the background music.

  • Sounds like Kermit the Frog!

  • What a great tune .I think this should have won the oscar that year .Bruce Springsteen won it and although his song was really good Neil Youngs was and still is in a different place. At least Bruce said on receiving the gong that he wanted to share it with Young

    regards

    jimmy

  • This is one of the most haughtingly beautiful songs ever recorded on film.

  • Looks like 11 people are complete idiots! How can you just not absolutely LOVE this song! It is heartbreakingly beautiful!!! Thanks SO much for posting!

  • One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I have ever experienced. Love Neil Young. No one could do this like him. Absolutely heartbreakingly beautiful!

  • @Aphrodine couldn't agree more.

  • Springsteen's song is great, really an awesome song, but this is something so special.

  • Reduces me to tears every time I hear this song by Mr. Young.

  • This song captured the ending of the movie PERFECTLY!

  • He has the amazing ability to put himself in someone else's shoes and writes the most beautiful songs. I didn't cry at the film until this song came on, then I was a complete wreck.

  • I like this song more than "Streets of Philadelphia," but Springsteen is definitely better than Young, in general.

  • @KleWdSide hahahahha, i don't think so.

  • @TheRockandroy Umm, yes. Young hasn't written an album that surpasses "The Wild, Innocent & The E Street Shuffle" and "Born To Run." Bruce is far more charismatic & has a better voice.

  • @KleWdSide music is subjective so your arguing something that differs from person to person

  • KleWdSide The fanboy in me spoke before and he speaks now (hence I wasn't willing to let you say Young is inferior). I don't like Bruce, he's too "american". I like Neil, he's more "universal". And i'm not either canadian nor american. Which one is better? no really objective way of knowing that, it's pointless, I think.

  • Wow...I forgot how Great this song is...Going to see Niel on 5/1/11 at the Tower near Philly...can't wait...

  • How could anyone not be moved to tears after seeing the movie or hearing this song?

  • Being the son of a music teacher, who could constantly nail the best song at the Oscars yr after yr.... was FLOORED when Springsteen won...nothing against the Boss, but Neil's song should have won, and I consider it one of the most elequent compositions ever...

  • one of the most underrated songs in the history of music...couldnt help, sorry

  • even as a big neil fan i am speechless sometimes

  • I love Bruce more than Neil but this should have WON!

  • I don't know why but I can't listen to this without crying. And yet I watch it over and over ......

  • I've seen Mr. Young twice in our beloved country of Canada. I have nothing but ample respect for the boss and I love his music but this track blows his out of the water!

  • Every now and then a songwriter gives us music and lyrics that just hit it right outta the ballpark. Well, this Neil Young song is a towering homer that sailed over the roof on the upper deck. If you can listen to this song, watch the home movies of Andy at the end of "Philadelphia" and not cry, you haven't got a heart. Absolutely beautiful.

  • meravigliosa canzone.

neil young tra i 5 da portare sulla luna per salvarlo da l 2012

  • One-two punch at the end of the movie; this with little kid andy at the shore on home movies; enuff to make a grown man cry.

  • fuck , Johnny was hot .

    love you Neil :)

  • I finally found it... so damn beautiful. tears in my eyes, again.

  • Neil Young tu peux pas test

  • im crying...

  • WOW! That's all you need to say..if anything...

  • There is a wonderful version of this song on Neil's Silver and Gold DVD.

  • It's as beautifull as the ending to Donny Darko, the song "mad world" is also very haunting for some reason.

  • What a voice. Unreal

  • there is no comparison, this song kicks the crap out of the Boss's mega hit

  • Why compare songs - that doesn't do either justice.

  • Better than Springsteen sad & happy merioes at the same time.

  • @OthelloJenkins that's not true at all. Both songs are great. Bruce wrote the theme song and that is what he was suppose to do. Neil was given the chance to write the ending song and he even had to change it, so it could have won by either and in this case Bruce won it. Don't bag him for that!

  • I guess they are both good! The other song was the main theme song so Bruce probably did deserve it!

  • Wer diesen Film nicht gesehen hat und dieses Lied nicht kennt, hat einmal im Leben zuwenig geweint.

  • i cry

  • Simply beautiful

  • Should have won the oscar

  • MAGNIFIQUE LES LARMES COULENT TOUTES SEULES

WONDERFULL I CRY VERY EASILY WITH THIS SUPERB SONG

  • I just watched the movie, and was just floored by the beauty of this song.

And, as wonderful as this rendition might have been when it first ran, the audio in this clip is corrupted ... the clicking and static takes away from the essential beauty of the piece. I am hoping to find a better example ....

  • What can you say...another great one by Neil.

  • mi commuovi sempre...

  • So gentle it's powerful

  • A melhor canção de toda a década de 1990.

  • Yes. Bruce Springsteen knows that Neil should have won that night.

This performance speaks for itself. I wish you could get a good

recording of this. Maybe on the ARCHIVES VOL.2 ???????

  • "like" is just not enough. where's the love button

  • I think of how things have changed since the film was released and that all the guys in the hospital scene are dead now. some before it hit the theaters.. Ok im getting depressed now.. i find myself humming this tune when my plane lands coming home from tours. City of brotherly love ____

  • I live in Philly . Just watched the movie a few hours ago. I cry every time especially when i hear this song. I always think of my Neighbor who lost his two brothers and his partner to AIDS. He has had it for 30 years. he lives with his elderly mom. When there only 2 left someone is gonna be left alone. if he goes she's lost all her sons to aids. if she dies he's lost everyone and has to die alone. Sad so sad.....

  • NY doesn't need awards or accolades or acknowledgements from academy members who probably voted for Bruce Springstein because they knew him better. He is beyond that.

This song makes the eyes perspire every time I hear it. The Streets of Philadelphia does nothing to me.

This film clip also celebrates the first time Pegi Young performs live with her husband.

  • fuck i cry.

  • My favorite line "I won't be ashamed of love."

  • Wow, he sounds terrific singing live!

  • ogni volta mi commuove...

  • one of the most underrated songs in the history of music...

  • @nickfromCO I totally agree. First time I hear this I thought wow..nobody else could sing this with the meaning it deserved to be felt by the listener.

  • Breaks my heart every time

  • Great song! His voice is so unique. I'm inspired by Neil Young, check out my vid.

  • how.

    the fuck.

did this not win an Oscar?

  • @iampoopman exactly, i love Springsteens song too but this one clearly had more heart and emotion

  • @iampoopman - I don't give damn if it won an Oscar or not. This song rocks and that's what matters!

  • I love springsteen but this track is beyond genuis....

  • Long may you run Niel.

  • Sometimes I think that I know

    What love's all about

And when I see the light

I know I'll be all right.

I've got my friends in the world,

    I had my friends

When we were boys and girls

    And the secrets came unfurled.

  • @mymovienerd ...I remember watching this years ago... Springteens tune didn't carry a basket for this... it truly is a better tune.... but no one in the Academy seems to understand the power of this song....

  • hey bruce springsteens was good but this is just a work of art

  • @cheekymanson: This guy has just been a monster...no peers, really. From this to Powederfinger, and dozens of others. Amazing.

  • this is a very very good song ;)

  • fwuckin niel. wow. quite nihilistic, this man's soul is loved by so many copied by so many creative greats, and still, few come close. it's a spirit road that we must find

  • I was choked when he was denied......kicked the shit out of Springsteen.......typical American propaganda BS

  • @billyboycott That doesn't have anything to do with it. Neil Young is one of us.

  • one of the best songs ever... and with the end scene of pfiladelphia a monument of feelings

  • some songs that are written for movies must be written before the movie script is written and don't really fit the movie. "Mrs Robinson" doesn't really have anything to do with the story of The Graduate. This song fits perfectly and really makes the final scene of the movie one of the great ones!

  • @dubliner27 @dubliner27 Neil wrote this song, the original version of the melody was more of a peaceful ode to the city. Jonathan Demme (who directed Philadephia) thought that this melody was "too pretty," as the ending of the film was dark and sad. Jonathan had to describe to Neil how the film ended, then asked him to base the changes to his melody on the film's ending. Neil was asked to portray himself as if he were Andrew.

  • One of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard-

  • Beautiful .....

  • I remember this not having the crackling in it before, and yes I'm pretty sure it was this version. Is this what YouTube does instead of taking down songs now?

  • Beautifully achieves an almost perfect balance of yearning and hope. A composition which gently pauses the mourning heart. Then beautifully and gently encourages fonder feelings. RPS from Jersey City, NJ

  • I lost my brother September 83, Jim Neal was/is so much more than a friend, mentor, a blood brother, a rascal, and the most important one a beautiful human who did right, did wrong he never judged. There’s a photograph of us when was kids, nothing mattered the smiles you see are deep and forged into a love that will live for my lifetime and I will live . . . My Big Brother gave me that and then some … Thanks Neil for this tune its deep.
