Great movie and just like Louis Armstrong singing "What a Wonderful World"..there is no other voice that can sing this song with the meaning intended. Beautiful!
@hickoryou812: Good point, Hick. A very few songs belong to the singer, and this is one. I guess it's the way Neil Young always sounded like he was about to crack out of tune on every song he sang. It kind of keeps you spell-bound and jumpy, but completely satisfied when the last note rings. Song after song.
Piece of Art.I have never and will never understand why this song was so under rated. This is one of the most powerfull song I have ever heard. Thanks for that Neil.
When I was 2 years old my grandma died of cancer. I never really knew her but I do know that this was her favorite song. Everytime I listen to this song I always think of her and cry wishing I knew my grandma.
He does this live on the 'Silver & Gold' DVD - and someone shouts out: "SHOULD'AVE WON!!!" And Neil laughs and says: "It would have been there [the Oscar] Right there...[on the piano]"
This song is like a prayer it's so perfect in every way. I loved the scenes in the film where this song was played. A master piece from Neil as ever. X
In a crazy world that makes no sense, this beautiful song was overlooked at the Grammys in favour of bruce springstein version of streets of philadelphia.
@MsChuckbert I like what you're saying. At the same time, I think it's pretty general to lump "we're all the same," into one category. We're all the same in a few key areas (wanting less suffering for ourselves, etc.) but we are really different too. I think we're a lot more different than a few key similarities. People can't handle the differences because they don't understand them or they have an opposing ego that offers no opportunity for change through a trained defense-mechanism response.
Perfectly worded ... I still cry with this song to this very day. I think of everyone I lost when this song plays and it breaks me up. I so agree that "we should make our lives easier and not lie, hurt or kill each other".
@MsChuckbert ya...I watch it over and over to. It's a good feeling some days and others not so much..but I love it. Over and over .I understand. Love and always love.
"City of brotherly love, the place I call home don't turn your back on me I don't want to be alone" God what a great line, it's so simple but yet in the context of the music it gets very emotional. This is a very haunting tune in every respect.
This was much better than the song f Bruce everybody knows that,Neil used magic to sing,it's touchin' and really is a work of a genius.Sorry Bruce, you're just another cowboy!
What a great tune .I think this should have won the oscar that year .Bruce Springsteen won it and although his song was really good Neil Youngs was and still is in a different place. At least Bruce said on receiving the gong that he wanted to share it with Young
Looks like 11 people are complete idiots! How can you just not absolutely LOVE this song! It is heartbreakingly beautiful!!! Thanks SO much for posting!
One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I have ever experienced. Love Neil Young. No one could do this like him. Absolutely heartbreakingly beautiful!
He has the amazing ability to put himself in someone else's shoes and writes the most beautiful songs. I didn't cry at the film until this song came on, then I was a complete wreck.
@TheRockandroy Umm, yes. Young hasn't written an album that surpasses "The Wild, Innocent & The E Street Shuffle" and "Born To Run." Bruce is far more charismatic & has a better voice.
KleWdSide The fanboy in me spoke before and he speaks now (hence I wasn't willing to let you say Young is inferior). I don't like Bruce, he's too "american". I like Neil, he's more "universal". And i'm not either canadian nor american. Which one is better? no really objective way of knowing that, it's pointless, I think.
Being the son of a music teacher, who could constantly nail the best song at the Oscars yr after yr.... was FLOORED when Springsteen won...nothing against the Boss, but Neil's song should have won, and I consider it one of the most elequent compositions ever...
I've seen Mr. Young twice in our beloved country of Canada. I have nothing but ample respect for the boss and I love his music but this track blows his out of the water!
Every now and then a songwriter gives us music and lyrics that just hit it right outta the ballpark. Well, this Neil Young song is a towering homer that sailed over the roof on the upper deck. If you can listen to this song, watch the home movies of Andy at the end of "Philadelphia" and not cry, you haven't got a heart. Absolutely beautiful.
@OthelloJenkins that's not true at all. Both songs are great. Bruce wrote the theme song and that is what he was suppose to do. Neil was given the chance to write the ending song and he even had to change it, so it could have won by either and in this case Bruce won it. Don't bag him for that!
I just watched the movie, and was just floored by the beauty of this song.
And, as wonderful as this rendition might have been when it first ran, the audio in this clip is corrupted ... the clicking and static takes away from the essential beauty of the piece. I am hoping to find a better example ....
I think of how things have changed since the film was released and that all the guys in the hospital scene are dead now. some before it hit the theaters.. Ok im getting depressed now.. i find myself humming this tune when my plane lands coming home from tours. City of brotherly love ____
I live in Philly . Just watched the movie a few hours ago. I cry every time especially when i hear this song. I always think of my Neighbor who lost his two brothers and his partner to AIDS. He has had it for 30 years. he lives with his elderly mom. When there only 2 left someone is gonna be left alone. if he goes she's lost all her sons to aids. if she dies he's lost everyone and has to die alone. Sad so sad.....
NY doesn't need awards or accolades or acknowledgements from academy members who probably voted for Bruce Springstein because they knew him better. He is beyond that.
This song makes the eyes perspire every time I hear it. The Streets of Philadelphia does nothing to me.
This film clip also celebrates the first time Pegi Young performs live with her husband.
@nickfromCO I totally agree. First time I hear this I thought wow..nobody else could sing this with the meaning it deserved to be felt by the listener.
@mymovienerd ...I remember watching this years ago... Springteens tune didn't carry a basket for this... it truly is a better tune.... but no one in the Academy seems to understand the power of this song....
fwuckin niel. wow. quite nihilistic, this man's soul is loved by so many copied by so many creative greats, and still, few come close. it's a spirit road that we must find
some songs that are written for movies must be written before the movie script is written and don't really fit the movie. "Mrs Robinson" doesn't really have anything to do with the story of The Graduate. This song fits perfectly and really makes the final scene of the movie one of the great ones!
@dubliner27@dubliner27 Neil wrote this song, the original version of the melody was more of a peaceful ode to the city. Jonathan Demme (who directed Philadephia) thought that this melody was "too pretty," as the ending of the film was dark and sad. Jonathan had to describe to Neil how the film ended, then asked him to base the changes to his melody on the film's ending. Neil was asked to portray himself as if he were Andrew.
I remember this not having the crackling in it before, and yes I'm pretty sure it was this version. Is this what YouTube does instead of taking down songs now?
Beautifully achieves an almost perfect balance of yearning and hope. A composition which gently pauses the mourning heart. Then beautifully and gently encourages fonder feelings. RPS from Jersey City, NJ
I lost my brother September 83, Jim Neal was/is so much more than a friend, mentor, a blood brother, a rascal, and the most important one a beautiful human who did right, did wrong he never judged. There’s a photograph of us when was kids, nothing mattered the smiles you see are deep and forged into a love that will live for my lifetime and I will live . . . My Big Brother gave me that and then some … Thanks Neil for this tune its deep.

@iampoopman - I don't give damn if it won an Oscar or not. This song rocks and that's what matters!

Sometimes I think that I know
What love's all about
And when I see the light
I know I'll be all right.
I've got my friends in the world,
I had my friends
When we were boys and girls
And the secrets came unfurled.

I was choked when he was denied......kicked the shit out of Springsteen.......typical American propaganda BS

@billyboycott That doesn't have anything to do with it. Neil Young is one of us.

one of the best songs ever... and with the end scene of pfiladelphia a monument of feelings

some songs that are written for movies must be written before the movie script is written and don't really fit the movie. "Mrs Robinson" doesn't really have anything to do with the story of The Graduate. This song fits perfectly and really makes the final scene of the movie one of the great ones!

@dubliner27 @dubliner27 Neil wrote this song, the original version of the melody was more of a peaceful ode to the city.
