According to a Norwegian book about the Eurovision Song Contest, she laughs because she finally looked into the right cameras, which she failed to do on the rehearsals.
One of Norway's worst entry ever. Norway has had some very good entries in the past(88,93,96 and 08 comes to mind)but majority of them are bad and that really bad(69,75,76,78,80,81,90,92,97,98,99,01,04,05,07 and 09)
During the rehearsals, one of the Swedish cameramen had trouble getting her to look in the camera, capturing her. During the final, however, he finally succeeded in making eye contact. He then gave her a "thumbs up" and a smile, and Merethe's spontaneous reaction was joy, which resulted in a brief laugh.
This laugh upset people, and you will find that this is not part of the national version. The reason that I know this is an interview that she gave shortly after the final. I don't know why I still remember; perhaps due to all the commotion, as some people believed that this outburst of hers had jeopardized her winning chances.
A very good Norwegian national heat that year, too bad this song won, with so many much stronger songs taking part. This is IMO the worst Norwegian winner ever, it starts off slow and dull with a melody you can't make head or tails of, goes into some nothingness for a while then up-tempo from there, three different tunes in one and all of them poor. My fave was Torhild Nigar's Irish-sounding ethnic tune, could've scored high.
I think the song is fabulous, the vocal is very good, but her mannerisms on stage are incredibly off putting, the chuchle and the toocloseness with the man with the mullet.
Wow, is she singing AND conducting the orchestra at the same time? Talented lady! Seriously, I think this was the best Scandinavian tune at the '92 contest.
This was one of our worse entries. The worst thing being, number 3 in the Norwegian preselection that year was Wenche Myhre with a song that would probably have gone Top 3.
So with 5 countries & 5 neighbours it gives you a very good chance of winning - although it sticks in my throat Ireland winning 7 times with its population & geography IS something to be proud of!
I agree she has a good voice but its the tack of the performance that puts me off, the laugh in the middle, the tacky ending, the backround singers who should be in the backround and the fact the song really went no where...sorry 2 points from me!
yes, I agree. Like Finland, Norway had its own tradition of sending weird stuff to the contest (find their 1980 entry and you'll see what I mean). This one starts great but, as you said, it doesn't go anywhere afterwards. Fortunately, next year they'd come back with one of their best entries ever and my definite favorite from that contest.
Merthe's singing was really off the mark, and that annoys me enough to have reconsidered giving her points. The song was quite nice, though, and the performance in the Norwegian final was far better as far as I remember. I disagree about the ending being tacky; that's the only time when her voice lifts off.
this aint weird - what type of songs do u listen too?? I bet its the traditional Euro anthems - verse chorus verse chorus chorus to end!!! Right? Nicely different but not a winner
This was certainly...different. I was in Eurovision heaven though: an uptempo number sung by a truly Viking valkyrie, and a stage performance with lots of pointing. Why did they cut out the horned helmet??? Maybe the Nayahesque end of the song scared too many people.
I think it should have done better, though it feels like the song is made of two or thee songs... At the end the song sounds a bit like "Musik klingt in den Welt hinaus"

The intro is a ballad, the verse is rock, the chorus is traditional schlager-pop, and the outro is opera!
And that (even that I like Merete very much) gets me to say, that this song is one of the worst norwegian entries ever!

@DavidSandKnakMUSIK - thats what made the song so good - 4 in 1.

@amundb : maybe the laugh setup people, but this song was certainly one of the weakest that year. This song had no chance of winning whatsoever.

The language spoils it. Norwegian has too many "silly sounds" in it.

She may have a classical vocal training., probably she is even a coloratura soprano. How much octaves can she cover?
