Well I think they wanted to capture the essence of drifting in Japan, where it originated. It would be really hard to do that with the previous storyline, so they had to go with a completely new cast and plot.

Random fact. For the drift scenes, they used Mustangs fitted with V8s as they were easier to handle and drifted more proficiently for shooting purposes. If you listen to the various bits of 'in shoot' footage you can hear them, to boot.

They did build up a fully functional RB26 engined one, which was tested by a few US mags as "Adequate but not impressive". This is the one you see them working on and for the under-bonnet shots :)
