I love Tom Waits and his music a lot, but it is something wrong with his voice at this video (and during all the concert) where is his amazing deepness of voice? That wasn't his day... but still it is one of the most beautiful songs...
in his earlier years he always hid himself in interviews & whatnot. you know how he looked down a lot and was a bit jittery? like he had a lot internally going on and as time went on and he sang more and more it seems as though he has gotten more comfortable and open (of course his lovely wife helped him a lot and I love how he speaks so kindly of her). He really pours his soul out in his music. Seems like a sweet person.
@ritzraff I second the "Talented, Intellient and GORGEOUS". He is really sweet. He has this shyness to him in a lot of his interviews you'll notice. He kind of hides his head, like there's something deeper. More internal you know? And in his later years he seems more open like when he sings he's getting out a lot. I enjoy that about him. Pouring out his soul. True performer.
In the blizzard of the music coming from that century, this crystal performance will one day be known as a real and true classic. Thank you Tom for what you've done to the american dream and thank you SarahV for giving it to the world.
There's absolutely no noise from the crowd, as though they vanished. I've read where he had a crowd in Sydney, Australia completely silenced by performing this tune there, up until the last note.
thank you. You make this place a classier place to visit. Way beyond anything any grammy award would be able to annoint.
Soon the grammy announcements will come out, and if WIdows Grove from Tom's Orphans CD doesn't get best song of the year, then I'm showing up to picket the Grammies. Seriously. Anyone want to join me?
I attended this trio in New Zealand a few months after this was recorded. I regard the show as one of the finest live acts I have ever attended. The tenor player was the 'bluesiest' horn player I have ever heard. Can anyone provide details of his (and bass player)'s names and background. Thanks for posting this clip.
Thanks SarahV for a most enjoyable evening indulging in one of passions Tom Waits.

It will be never a classic, feelings can't be classics, feelings that everyone feels, but Tom says them!
It's modern, extraordinary, unique, fulfiled with life.
Thank you Tom.
