Hm...... I'd tell you 7 years ago when I was a Catholic. That was the day when I found out their facist ways. This is a peculiarity indeed, yet I haven't bothered myself to look into it. This comment might be a waste of your time, so apologies.

Child sexual abuse is a world wide problem. It is not isolated to the Catholic Church. There is no evidence that it occurs more frequently in the Catholic Church, though the media reports it more because it existing at all within the Catholic Church is so much more scandalous because the Church is expected to live up to a higher standard. The problem has been in bishops moving perpetrators around rather than removing them and handing them over to civil authorities. That is all.
I know it is not isolated to the Catholic church but Catholicism (and other Christian sects) are obsessed with sex. Instead of saying that what consenting adults do with each other is their own business, it layers guilt upon those who don't comply with the man woman, missionary position no condom standards of celibate cardinals in the Vatican. Catholics with different proclivities try to escape the guilt by taking up the cloth and declaring celibacy. They are landmines waiting to detonate.
@dsau006 It is society that is obsessed with sex. Catholic moral teaching is about sacrificial, selfless love. Its moral standards covers EVERY aspect of our lives, sexuality included. Our lives are to be a perpetual prayer. Marriage is a sign of God's love for His Church. Celebacy is a sign to remind us that marriage is only the sign, not the end. It is to remind us that "our hearts are restless till they rest in [God]." And BTW, the Church has no teaching on sexual positions.
This is unrelated to your comment (other than it indicates that you're a Catholic though correct me if I'm wrong) but is there any explanation that you would venture of why so much abuse took and takes place in the Catholic Church?
Once again, I'm not questioning what Catholicism states about morality, but simply questioning how the institution itself is run.
But celibacy and a lack of physical contact is a completely unnatural expectation of any person. Deny people their innate physical life and they will either implode or release it in some unspeakable manner - often in the form of child rape. You say it is society that is obsessed with sex. I disagree. Society sees sex as no big deal and let's it occur freely. Christianity focuses on suppressing it. It is you that has made sex such a high and mighty thing - why else would you deny its freedom?

A New York Times article reveals that the psychologist who treated the priest in Ratz's home diocese of Munich BEGGED the Church NOT to put him in active ministry; that he was "just too sick". He made this report directly to the then Cardinal Ratz.......who IGNORED this & allowed him to continue as a priest.
1. many priest are gay - yet required to be in deep denial about it AND to teach it is evil. Thus they become self-loathing.
2. in 'priest culture' the notion of innate superiority to ALL humans is nurtured & with it the concept that they are a law unto themselves.
Without ever getting into the endemic spiritual dysfunction, priests are being set up psychologically to act out their sexual repression - with no scruples. Knowing their bishops will defend them as 'company policy'.
Serious revelations have been steadily coming out for nearly a decade. And one thing that sickens me is the minimizing, "oh, other religions do this too..."
We need to understand why pedophilia exists and the Churchs responsibility for it.
Pedophilia is a condition acquired in adolescence, the result of 'Arrested Psycho-sexual development' usually caused by some traumatic event in the child's life.
The type of pedophilia most common with priests, though found in many lay people as well, is often the result of the boy being made to feel ashamed of his body or masculinity, excessive guilt regarding sexual feelings, etc.
2. Poor parenting, diminishing the childs self-esteem, especially in the area of his masculinity, religious imperatives against expressing ones sexuality, including a ban on masturbation, all take their toll on the maturing young boy.
One the main culprits, in this area, is religion; since the advent of the Abrahamic religions, sexual activity has come under strict guidelines and has generally been regarded as a lower form of human behavior. It seems that each new variant has become more sexually repressive, Christianity outdoing Judaism, Islam even more extreme.
This has caused many problems in society and mental health issues resulting from this sexual repression pervade our lives.
Instilling feelings of guilt or shame about normal sex drives, often in the form of fear of eternal punishment, causes many people, especially the most devout, severe psychological problems.
This is evidenced in the child abuse problems of the church, these men did not become pedophiles because they were priests, they became pedophiles because they believed in the tenets of their religion and took refuge in the church due to those beliefs.
It seem strange that the pope would list "a failure of leadership causing people to cover it up" when he directley ordered the cover-up himself! That child abusing peice of shit is directley responcable for the cover-up of thousands of cases!
Here is a smoking gun against the Vatican and their Laity, Latin Vulgate, New Testament Ch. 18, V. 6, direct words of Christ, "But he that shall scandalize one of these little ones that believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone should be hanged about his neck, and that he should be drowned in the depth of the sea." This alone indicates that the Unholy See cares nothing of this warning and clearly shows their "mockery" of his words. The Vatican serves the Dark Angels and Satan.
Catholic priest are not motivated to take responsibility for their sins, because all they need to do after molesting a child is confess and repent and all will be forgiven!
We need get a few facts straights. Britain, America and every other European nation are SECULAR societies. The laws of the land is of a SECULAR state. They are not based on Christianity, which is why we have gay rights, womens right, rights for ethnic minorities and so on.
And out society worships MONEY and not God. Because we place a high value on MONEY, quite often Child abuse cases are allowed to go on because of the financial cost of trying to save children from their abusive parents.
When I said "wide spread child abuse has been reported in..." I meant in Catholic schools in the countries I mentioned.
I'm not blaming Catholicism for all cases of child abuse in these countries, only the vast amount of documented cases that can be directly linked to members of the Catholic clergy.
@miksedene you used words like "WIDE SPREAD CHILD ABUSE" and the "VAST AMOUNT of etc.etc.etc..
But the reality is, child abuse cases go on in every level of society, whether its a STATE school, private school, Islamic school, CARE HOMES, Young offenders prison institutions, the poor sink estates, middle class suburbs.
To simply pin the blame on the CATHOLIC institution is simply ignoring the wide scale nature of child abuse
Have you looked at the statistics and the reports? If you have evidence that the incidences in the Catholic church aren't significantly higher than the occurrences elsewhere please point me towards your sources and I will make a retraction.
@miksedene yes I accept there are child abuse case in some catholic institutions, that doesnt mean every single catholic institution has this problem. I never personally experienced it in the catholic I went to.
If you go on GOOGLE search and type in CHILD ABUSE STATISTICS
You will find sites there which shows that Child abuse is not limited to the catholic church. The vast amount of cases go on in very poor areas, bad parents and in poor countries.
Please don't patronise me. I never said child abuse was limited to the Catholic church, merely that it is endemic to the institution. This does not mean that every single Catholic school has staff who abuse children, just that the rate of child abuse is much higher than normal. This is the case in Catholic institutions worldwide.
@miksedene you wrote "the rate of child abuse is much higher than normal " regarding catholic institutions
Well your overlooking a few basic facts. Child abuse crimes quite often goes on in secrecy and in many cases, the victims dont report it to the authorities. You could use many of these Muslim countries as an example, where women and children dont dare report sex abuse because they usually end up being blamed.
For you to have a valid point against me (considering the scope of this video was child abuse in the Catholic church) you need to show me that the rate is not significantly higher than the norm. Saying that abuse takes place elsewhere does not absolve the Catholic church of the responsibility for the cases that happen as a direct cause of its dogma and statutes.
@miksedene many of the child abuse cases that have been bought to the spotlight goes way back to the 1970's and earlier. You could also find many of the care homes had problems with child abuse. But during the last 10 years a lot of improvements have been made in order to protect children from abuse.
Thats all we can do. We cant do anymore than that. Abusers have the ability to decieve people of course their are going to be abusers disguised as priests thats going to slip through the net
Miksedene lets get real here. Child abuse is a universal problem. Its not limited to the Catholic Church. It happens in the Muslim world and every other religious organisations.
It also happens in the secular world. Right now some child is being abused somewhere in the country and the SOCIAL WORKERS who are responsible are probably turning the other cheek and covering the problem up just like religious institutions. Mainly because it costs too much to investigate and deal with these problems
Should we be surprised that the Catholic Church continues when the minds of its faithful have been indoctrinated to believe the unbelievable? The dogma of the Catholic Church has enabled that institution to continue despite its sordid history of violence; greed; intolerance; sexual perversions; and discrimination against Jews, women and homosexuals. The church preaches humility and sacrifice while flaunting its wealth and authority. The colossal hypocrisy of that institution is without equal.
Wether or not the church is to be blamed for the sexual abuse, is in the air, but what it can 100% be blamed for is the covering up, and moving the priests around instead of having them jailed or at the least thrown out on their asses.
Great vid and the citizens of the world agree with you that a "letter of apology" is not enough. Surely all must know that the Pope was the "mouthpiece for John Paul II as the Head of the Inquisition" for more than 20 years. THEY ARE JUST WORDS ON PAPER and have no real meaning. Law enforcement and abandonment of the Beast is what is required. Men in dresses, with bright colored sashes, little hats, red shoes.....bejewelled is "fruity." But these men don't sex each other, THEY ABUSE CHILDREN.
I think why it's endemic to the church is obvious. It's endemic for similar reason to it's being endemic in the boy scouts, sports coaches, teachers, or any other profession where the opportunity to use power to sexually abuse presents itself. Add to that the vow of celibacy, and it's an even more volatile mixture.
In addition pedophiles may be drawn to the priesthood, and idea of celibacy, as a way to control their sexual tendencies.
@TheNakedAtheist I saw one theory which suggested that pedophiles heard that the priesthood was a safe haven to be a pedophile, so they joined exactly for that reason. That might explain why the statistics of offenders we are now seeing are absolutely horrific. One would expect pedophiles to be very careful in revealing what they do, but apparently they find each other and network, and help each other, etc. So there is this possibility as well as the things you mentioned.
I had a friend who claimed that child abuse in the Catholic church was no higher than any other institution which had chidren placed in its care. Mind you, she also claimed that condoms do nothing to stop AIDS, so she was a little bit nuts. I know in Australia the Anglican church has had a big problem with child abuse. Is this the case in the UK too?
From what I have gathered, seeing various things in the media about pedophile priests, and specifically in Ireland, the key to the problem was that a priest was viewed as an unquestionable authority. That means even the parents of a child, or police that suspect wrongdoing, would be very reluctant,if not completely unwilling, to accuse a priest, or persue an investigation, etc. So priests had a free reign and they abused that power with devastating results.
@NYatheist To add a bit more in the way of an example: A documentary about the pedophile priests in Ireland, had an interview with current adults who were molested as children. One person said the priest who was also a school teacher would sit him in his lap at the front of the class and molest him blatantly, right in front of dozens of witnesses. So that shows the absurd degree of immunity a priest had to being held responsible, when they could commit their crimes in public, with no fear.

It seems to be endemic to most religious organizations. Look at the Boy Scouts...
