  • Don't get me wrong, Billy Elliot was great. But it only won because it featured Elton John's music. Next to Normal was far more emotional and overall better.

  • Aboot the Tony awards ;) A Canadian!!

  • BILLY ELLIOT ALL THE WAY!! the whole cast is absolutely amazing!

  • i saw next to normal, billy elliot, shrek and rock of ages.they were all great! i knew rock of ages wasnt gonna win.shrek should have won more awards.the reason why billy elliot won best musical is because the kids were amazing and elton johns musical.but i totally agree with you, next to normal should have won!

  • callate estupidaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • I'm going to see Next to Normal in Helsinki City Theater (Finland) in March. Can't wait!

  • xq todos los qe hablan ingles (o la mayoria) tienen voz de pu..tos??

  • go Next to Normal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love love love the musical and Aaron Tveit is soooo amazing.

  • billy elliot all the wayy

    :D

  • go home. now.

  • HAIR!! <3 I love it!! :)

  • YOu are the most boring man ever!

  • @glenil Close, but no cigar!

  • WHAT! Okay Karen Olivo STOLE THE SHOW in West Side. She's AAAMMMAAAZZZIIINNNGGGGGG!!! She totally deserved to win. And I looove Next to Normal, but I'm sorry, I can't stand Alice Ripley. Her voice annoys me and I think she needs to be a little more grounded. She's a little cocky for my taste. But that's just me, I know a lot of people love her.

  • go fuck ur butt buddy

  • @homieG1011 you're so ignorant. Ugh, I seriously can't stand people like you.

  • next to normall was AMAZING!!! but i am billy elliot all the wayyyy and i was sooooo glad they won<3<3

  • Billy Elliot. Hands Down.

  • you talk too fast..and I agre with you ..Alice Ripley...I saw her in side show> Amazing!!!

  • well i hate to say, as much as you don't like Karen Olivo, she won the 2009 Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her stirring potrayal of Anita in West Side Story

  • If Next to Normal would have opened a week or two earlier, it would have KILLED in the season before. But it definitely should have won.

  • gayyyyyy

  • it was always gonna be billy elliot

  • i adoreee next to normal and ive heard really good things about title of show :]

  • OMG! You're from Toronto! And you love Gavin Creel too?! Ah!

You're amazing! I love this video. It's fantastic. lol.

I feel like we are like, the same person.....

  • r u gay? no affence! just wondering?

  • broadway = <3

  • NEXT TO NORMAL!!!!!

  • I saw Shrek in December. it was amazing!

  • you got most to all of your picks wrong

  • This past week I traveled to NY and saw South Pacific, West Side Story and Next to Normal. And i completely agree Next to Normal is phenomenal. I loved the tech work and the placement of the instrumentalists. But Karen Olivo was amazing in West Side Story it blew me away.

  • that's so weird because this past week i saw the exact same shows are you from chattanooga, tn?

  • yeah i am. Do you go to CCA?

  • you're damon. This is Travis haha

  • hahahaha i had a feeling

  • Next to Normal should have won indeed. I enjoyed Billy Elliot, But N2N was phenomenal.

  • (Michael Murphy) presides over the. Play this movie @ MovieWatcher (dot) US

  • she loves it raw tiny[.]cc/doherhole

  • Billy Elliot was a deserving winner such an amazing and powerful musical ive seen it 7 times and can't wait till i see it again :)

  • next to normal should have won! i saw it and it was so emotional and amazing and i was seriously bawling in the theatre. it was just fantastic. the best musical i have ever seen in my entire life

  • i've seen videos about Next to Normal...it's amazing....is there a dvd of the entire musical???

  • hey, are you gonna do a b-way review for 2010?

  • i am obbsessed with next to normal

  • SUTTON FOSTER

  • N2N was pretty good

    sutton herself is amazing

but the emotion in N2N is *sigh*

  • N2N is a amazing original musical with a very strong story line, a even stronger cast, as well as the charactors in and of themselfs are relatable in one way or another. Wether it be Natalie's repesed emotions, or the Fathers strugel to get everything togeter.

Shrek, though well written, is a bit of a money show. Good cast, big costumes, the plot if known through the movie of coarse and b\c of that it a wonderful feel good musical but N2N was the complete underdog that stunned people.

  • by the way I never saw In the Heights but Karen Olvito was by far the break out actress in West Side Story, she was amazing and brought life and flavor to Anita!!

  • alice riply is amaaaazing, and she has THE best signature ever!! Bubble Letters!!

  • no come to london billy eleot there as well

  • yay for the [tos] shout out!! :)

  • Yes, it should've been Gavin. :)

The Billy boys rock, though. No doubt.

  • best musical shrek the musical

  • I think da reason Aaron wasn't nominated was cuz he left da show 2 days later, and tony awards make ppl come see shows, make em think they're soooo god we have to see it.

  • youre dumb, voyspace com had it first.

  • Where's the bootleg of N2N?!?!?

Rofl, if you can send me that link, I'd forever owe you my soul.

  • NEXT TO NORMAL and AARON TVEIT ARE AMAIZNG! :D

  • OH MY GOD YES.

when aaron comes on it's always like *ahhhhhhhhhhh* oommgggggg

  • and al so Beauty and the Beast and sound of music.

  • i think the best musical are The Lion King and phantom of the opera.

  • hey y's everyone doing thumbs down for alpehouj its just an opinion

  • Where did you get Next to Normal? I really want to see it, but I can't get to NYC.

  • I was in billy elliot Australia

  • Good commentary. Billy Elliot is a good show, but Next to Normal is a great one, joining West Side Story, Gypsy, Follies, Chicago and Dreamgirls as the greatest musicals to lose the Tony.

  • nah, next to normal is completely mediocre. billy elliot deserved it. but wss should've won best revival.

  • is it just me, or wuld Alice Ripley be great as the lead in Gypsy?

  • My cousin is in Billy Elliot..my cousin

    Greg Jbara

  • OMFG U R SOOOO LUCKY !!!!!

  • Guys and Dolls has been revived too many times it's starting to water down the show.

Billy Elliot is good. It reminds me of a cleaner version of The Full Monty for some reason.

  • i just came home from new york, and i saw:

next to normal, hair, billy elliot, and 9 to 5.

next to normal was fantastic, but billy elliot was also amazing.

alice ripley, no doubt, deserved to win.

and the boys from next to normal have so much expirience and potential to be amazing dancers, which they already are. they need to work on there singing tho.

anyway, i loved all the shows ( :

  • guapo

  • totally agree with you!!!!!

  • I can't believe that Hunter didn't get the Tony 4 Best Book!

  • I LOVER NEXT TO NORMALL MY LIFEEEE

  • oh my God I totally agrre with you! Next to Normal should have won!!! I also thought it was so unfair that "Gabe" from ntn wasn't nominated! And the person who actually won the award so didn't deverse it, if they wanted to give another award to billy elliot they should have given it to the little boy who plays michael he's absolutely hilarious! But you got almost everything right, LOVE ALICE!!!

  • I enjoyed watching this very much. Thank you! NEXT TO NORMAL is amazing <3

  • next to normal is my favorite

  • Okay, people. Everyone has their own opinion, lay off. I mean I understand where some of you guys are coming from with the whole you have to see the show to critic the show but still you know you guys have seen a commericail or something and been like "Oh god, that's awful" or whatever so stop judging him.......for god sakes. Keep Reviewing man, awesome. C:

  • I wanted N2N to win so much too. But, Billy Eliot won, which is also great.

  • Free speech bitch, free speech.

  • Didi you even see Billy Elliot???????!!!!!! See something before you judge it please because that show was amazing and every award they won, they won for a reason, think about that for a minute

  • Obviously you are a Billy Elliott fan, and that is great. This video is just his opinion, so just relax. Everybody is entitled to their opinion.

  • WHAT!??????!!!!!!! you are actually saying that the Billy's shouldn't win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW BRILLIANT THEY ARE THEY PUT ALL THEIR HEART AND SOUL INTO THAT SHOW!!!!!!!!! I AM A HUUUUUUUUUUUDGE SUPPORTER OF THE SHOW AND THOSE BOYS AND YOU KNOW WHAT THEY WON SO THERE!!!!!

  • Billy Eliiot deserved everything it was awarded for. Kiril, Trent, and David did the most amazing job anyone could ever do in a musical and it was pure genius. When I saw that show, it melted my heart and every part of it is filled with heart, sincerity, and life. I am sure everyone who saw it would agree with me. It truly changed the way I look at life and deserved every single award. It was and will remain, the best musical EVER made.

  • check out my channel i made a broadway commercail :)

karen olivio rox. she won a tony. amen.

  • hey wassup, this is Tony from Puerto Rico, thanks for doing these predictions. It helped me figure out info about the latest shows and their stars! good job, continue doing this please.

  • im going to see billy eliot on thursday :]

  • Ah i wanted N2N to win SO BAD ): but billy elliot is really good too.

N2N relates to people more i think.

    THUS it should've won.

  • Hey! So here are my opinions

Billy Elliot was a great show but N2N should have won. I think in N2N you have to know how to act and sing and Billy is dancing, the actiing in N2N however requires so much talent! Both were great shows but I was moved more by N2N. Jennifer Damino-I prob spelled that name wrong was incredible but I did enjoy Karen just as much. Alice Ripley, there's no comparing of course she won and I'm glad she did. I met her at the stage door and she is the nicest person ever

  • U asked to rate it, Its bad about a 1 star

  • billy elliot = best show.

    hands down.

no other show can even compare. so there.

  • First off Billy Elliot deserved every award it was nominated for. The performance at the Tony's was nothing like it was at the Imperial Theatre. The set and every detail was different to make sure timing for CBS was maintained. It's obvious if they won 10 out of the 15 nominations, people want to see the show. There's more to it than television. Go see a real show in person before you judge it!!!!

  • I totally agree, Aaron Tveit should have been nominated 4 a tony, he's completely AMAZING!!!!!! But I loved all the actors that were nominated 4 best featured actor in a musical..... so they should have had 6 nominees. jeez. :)

  • next to normal and billy elliot are amazing! i like sherk but its not a real musical to me because they are in costumes and idk it just doesnt seem to be broadway to me! and dolls and guys....kinda hate it cuz it tooks legally blonde place! i wanted o see legally blonde too thts why and now i never will!! :( you seeem cool soo maybe we can be friends? lol ya dnt see guys who ae into broadway alot!!

  • Billy Elliot is amazing, I saw it in the UK West-end so I can't talk about the Broadway version...

  • Very smart vid man...I also love the music from Next to Normal. Stirring for sure!

  • i rally agree....but yeah there is going to be an epic battle between those who like next to normal, and the those who like billy elliot...i haven't heard much, but it seems to be one or the other...hahaha...i love it. NEXT TO NORMAL FTW!

  • not really I would have been happy with either. so no "epic battle" I think both Billy and Next to Normal were amazing when I saw them. I do think Next to Normal should have one best musical but I also sort of knew that wasn't going to happen so I'm happy with Billy. It's not that Billy didn't deserve it, only N2N deserved it more in my opinion.

  • Can't believe Billy Elliot won best musical... :-(

It's su bloomin' mediocre it hurts!!! And the music is shocking!!!

    Sad times.

  • it won ten tony awards....that doesnt just happen with mediocre shows...have you actually seen it live?

  • it only won those freakin awards because of elton john.

  • and trent is the man. okay so what? all your saying is elton john is great., which he is.....elton john wrote good music you have no idea what you're talking about.

  • It was bad music...AIDA was good music...

  • also bad music? took a look at your profile ummm WICKED? probably the most average musical out there. all the music sounds basically the same. I mean i'll give defying gravity some credit but yeah you need to learn about theater if you're going to make these comments.

  • The refrains in Wicked are hugely indepth. And Elphabas chord progression? Bet u didnt look that deep...not to mention the Somewhere over the rainbow refrain/theme. BillyE has NO depth, its just pop...And RENT was terrific musically...as was Chess, Wild Party, see what i wanna see, ticktickboom, spring awakening, les mis, Hell even Avenue Q had more depth and emotion!!! I'm sorry but the B/E musical was not a good score! Even the Tony people knew that!

  • Who cares if Billy Elliot "has no depth" in your opinion? It's broken all box office records for the theatre it was in in Melbourne. It's been running in London now for 5 years, and it's doing pretty well on Broadway, AND won 10 Tony Awards. With popularity like THAT, it's obvious what people want to watch!!

  • Shows like WeWillRockYou have similar success and I find them a disgust to the art of Theatre...unfortunately, as with popular music, the majority wins...and on most situations that majority has little or no taste! That's why S/A did so poorly on W/E, consumerism and lack of theatrical education and experience. The sooner WWRY dies the better in my book!

Just because something is successful don't mean it's good...just because something isnt don't mean it's bad...

  • That's a great philosophy to have if you genuinely believe "the theatre" is about playing to the "elite", or to those who think they know what everybody else should watch but "theatre" itself is not about playing to an empty auditorium. It's all about giving the people what they want. Film has shown us that. And the people have voted with their feet with Billy Elliot!

  • The thing is - there is proof that lifechanging musicals that really DESERVE to succeed do...for example, RENT or Wicked. It's not the consumerism itself that bugs me, because of this - but shows like WWRY could have been good (eg, Mama Mia is really fun!) but it's just CRAP! Because they didn't bother to make it good, then got pissed when the reviews were crap. I just don't think Billy E should have won, and I genuinely think the novelty of the Britishness swung it - and children dancing!

  • There seems to be a feeling around younger Broadway-goers these days that if something is tuneless and contains a lot of screaming, it is more serious, deeper and worthier. I do not agree. Dear young man, it sounds as if you did not even see most of the shows upon which you are commenting. No offense, but I am so glad you were wrong on a lot of your choices.

  • I'm sorry but how dare you stereotype a younger generation of theatregoers and belittle them because their personal choice of Musical doesn't match yours! They are the future of the Musical, you will soon be the past...

I am 17, does this mean my opinion is less valid than yours? NO! I have seen all sorts of Musicals and plays, probably about as many as you have in the past 6 months...

The music of Billy Elliot was a lot of shouting and noise..it was poor. Give me some RENT on the other hand..

  • Yes I have - and that flying scene??? Was one of the most rediculous things I have EVER seen!

It was a nice night out, but it was unremarkable...defo deserved best choreography, no question, but best show??? Well then I'm losing faith in the power of Broadway if that's the best show the Theatre district can come up with...

  • 1) It's quite interesting how you only remember the scene they showed at the Tony's

    2)It's spelt ridiculous

    3) I do think Next to Normal should have one best show but I don't think Billy was undeserving. It was still great only N2N was better in that sense.

  • They didn't show the flying scene at the Tony's did they? It was the manic dancing scene. Ok here's some more scenes. Got a little teary when his Mum first came on...but when he hugged her in Act 2!? RUINED IT!!! HE CANT! Thats what was so heartwrenching about the scene - BAD decision. Another good scene was the girls dancing on the workers knees. I KNOW PEOPLE IN THE LONDON ONE! Get over it! I have a different opinion to you and thought it wasn't that great! And sorry I got 1 letter wrong...

  • my moms a producer on broadway so yeah I know people too? as in trent and david. and a lot of other people in other shows but yes i agree the score was not the best but it didn't win best score N2N did. okay and yes ive seen spring awakening multiple times actually just saw the tour version last night and it is by far in my top 5 musicals and apparently they're trying to make a spring awakening movie? they will massacre it.

  • yeah SA movie is going to be a bit scary. But Steven Sater is writing it and Duncan Sheik is going to be involved. I'm still worried because I love the show so much. I'd rather they just film the tour cast.

  • yeah lea michelle said she wanted to get involved( at least i read that somewhere) but idk shes fantastic and like amazing at what she does but i think she's sort of old for the part...but yeah it'd be better if they did it based more off of the play i think

  • Woah a producer on Broadway!!! That's so cool! What kinda stuff has she done???

I haven't seen N2N so I can't fully judge but what I have heard was great!!!

I didn't know about the SA movie!!! WTF!? That's gonna be SO ODD! Hahaha! Hmm...

  • yeah i mean its either gonna be great or horrid. but uh she's done dirty rotten scoundrels, grey gardens, spring awakening, a funny thing happened on the way to the forum

  • Woah that's fantastic! It must be so great literally having a family so into the Theatre! Professionally too not just as a love!!! Really cool :-)

  • Broadwaybabe1234, not sure if you are asking me, but yes, have seen all Best Musical winners, and virtually all nominees over past 30 years. Next to Normal is by far the best, in a league of its own. Incredibly moving and emotional, see it!

  • i'm sorry, but if you haven't seen karen olivo on WSS i don't think you should just jump to conclusions of her performance just based on in the heights. she really did deserve that award, i saw her a few months ago and it was one of the best performances i've seen in a while.

  • Sorry, but you're kind of pretentious for writing off Billy Elliot for being adapted from a movie. Do all movies based off books suck too?

And how many of these have you actually seen?

  • InCupsOfCoffee, he's not saying that it's bad because its adapted from a movie, he's saying that it's unoriginal to adapt. So therefore it's not as intriguing and just worse in general, whereas writing it from scratch is 28659273846x harder to do, and should get the credit. (i think that's what he's saying).

  • you said it better than I could have. thanks

  • im sorry but Billy Elliot was better than Next to Normal but i will give you that "i am the one" was really good

  • woot woot for alice ripley!

  • next to normal has the best recording the west side recording is unsurpassssssed

  • N2N was the only one that seemed worthy of best musical status...I was disappointed.

  • Have you seen all best musicals?

  • Thanks for the reply! Billy was a nice evening, but forgettable. Most of the fun was watching very talented kids, but that doesn't make it a great musical. One great song (Electricity), the rest were mediocre. But Normal sucks you in immediately with a great eclectic score, amazing cast (Aaron Tveit was robbed), so amazingly original. But what makes it an all-time great is the emotional pull. Most people are visibly moved, I've never seen anything like that in 30 years of theater-going.

  • I agree with everything you said lol. It's a shame N2N didn't win more.

  • Next to Normal is the most incredible musical I have ever seen, and I see them all every year. Billy won because it is more commercial, and while enjoyable, it just isn't in the same league. See Next to Normal, you won't be disappointed.

  • ya I think everyone knew billy would take it, and its hard to compare the two because they're both great, but originality is what blows my mind. Billy elliot was a great movie first, next to normal just came out of the blue and rocked it!

  • GAY! (sorry, i have to say it)

  • you should go suck it!

  • lol, thanks :-)

  • Aaron was freakin' gypped. So what if he was leaving the next day? Life isn't about commitments, it's what you bring when you're there.

Best actor should've been j robert spencer.

freakin agree with you for n2n everything.

  • Aaron is flying under the radar, he didn't get nominated for this, but like what happened with Lea Michel in Spring Awakening, he generated a lot of buzz for his performance, which will help him in the long run. I mean he was amazing!

  • Three cheers for using pics of my Aussie Billy Elliots! ;) LOL.

  • YAY! I had no idea it was the Aussie Billy's but I'll take 3 cheers anyday!

    Thanks for watching/commenting :-)

  • dude

how did you do the opening animation? ive been wondering for a year

  • imovie, dude!

  • is it like imovie 08 with sOmething new, or imovie 09....or

    WHATTT?!?!?!?!1

  • I loved that title of show got a nomination. It totally deserved it. Hunter Bell rocks!

  • [tos]ser for life!

  • Great reviews! Just to let you know, the Vanessa that replaced Karen Olivio in In the Heights is MUCH better.

Where did you get the Next to Normal bootleg?

I've been looking for one for awhile.

  • what about rock of ages? :( that show was totally amazing! also why did aaron leave next to normal?

  • Tveit is taking a leave of absence from the acclaimed musical to star in the world premiere of the Scott Wittman-Marc Shaiman-Terrence McNally musical Catch Me If You Can, July 23-Aug. 16 at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre.

  • he's doing an out of town tryout of "catch me if you can". but he will be back in sept

  • You are extremely talented. This was my first time seeing the Tony's and I now see what I was missing. If I only had the money to go to NYC. Seriously they need to bring these shows to FL so that I can get to see them lol. Next To Normal is now at the top of my list of must see musicals. I have always loved Hair's music and the revival cast has outdone themselves. Must see these shows!

  • Next to Normal should have won, i think,

  • One little correction, 9 to 5 was a movie too!

    Great show!

  • but it wasn't nominated for best musical.

  • ps- two words-

    GAVIN. CREEL.

*sigh* and thusly i leave. muah. <3

  • next to normal MURDERED me. absolutely MURDERED me. omg corey. i need to be the mom. you need to be the son. DONE. <3

  • YES! I want to play gabe so much, I'm working the secret! common oprah, don't fail me now!!

    xoxox

  • Rock of Ages isn't an Original Musical. It's a jukebox musical.

  • but I guess what I meant, is that its not based on a film

  • i absolutely LOVE next to normal! i saw it in april right after it opened and the music and cast are both outstanding! Especially Alice Ripley and Aaron Tveit (pornounced tu-VATE, for the record). I totally agree - Aaron was TOTALLY robbed :/ oh ,well, at least they gave him a solo in the opening number as compensation.

  • these are great opinions. i wish the tony voters could be as smart.

  • Can I just say that Jeanine Tesori is amazing! And Next to Normal was a great show. I'm sad that it didn't win, but I'm really glad Billy Elliot won. It had great choreography and music.

  • good....!!!!. thanks

  • They all seemed great. You have a good future I'm into Susan Boyle hope she comes to America

  • Why does everyone love her!? - I'll admit I was shocked when I first heard her, but then I realised she just has a nice voice...she only did so well because she's ugly...

  • Is next to normal the only show you've seen. I predict it will close by the end of the year

  • its actually doing well, 92% sales this week, which is much better than SA did after the tony's. Also, the booth theatre is smaller, but this cast is smaller... I don't know. It might close, but it probably doesn't need much to stay open. and it just won 3 tonys.

  • Why do you say that? It just won three tonys and the show is brilliant! The music is amazing and their performances are so moving! I'd much rather see a fresh, new, original musical than a movie musical... anyone else?
