i remember when i was young seeing an old man who had a pet goose who followed him everywhere... and that was really unusual, geese were meant for eating, and parrots, goldfish, dogs and cats were considered pets...
i got chickens as pets. i was a kid (still am) and i named my chicken blackberry (no relation to the phone). one day i came back from vacation and they were found torn apart by a raccoon. while looking for my dads phone number shortly after finding them, the 2003 blackout happened. then after that, the blackberry came out. (i think)
I used to have some big chickens and a few bantams. The big chickens would lay eggs then ignore them (wouldn't brood them). I'd put the big chicken eggs in a nest and the little bantams would brood the eggs, hatch them, and then mother the baby chicks. The big chickens would roost in the chicken hutch, but the bantams liked to roost way up in the trees. Funny, loveable birds. I just bought three young bantams today at the local feed store here in New Mexico.
Wow! They're beautiful. Glad to hear they're laying eggs now. I've been saying the same thing about chickens for 8 years... i quit eating them when i was nine and have wanted one or two as pets ever since. My mom has been the only thing stopping me. She says they're disgusting things that don't need to be kept as pets, but I know better. Cleaner than dogs and cats by far. To top that I can make diapers for them, yet she still wont give me a chance. Ha ha, but enough about me. I love your birds.
I lived in the suburbs and the only pets you would see would be cats and dogs. I had a pet chicken! she would follow me everywhere, so picture this I would ride my Unicycle to the dairy queen about a mile away which looked funny enough and my chicken would follow me there and then sit on the seat until I came back out and then he would follow me back home. Best pet I ever had, I had no idea that a chicken could be such a good pet and make all the neighbors laugh and smile at the same time.
That would be a funny sight!! We live in lake community where most people will drive around on golf carts. When we drive around on ours, I will usually take one of the chickens with me. We've gotten a few laughs with that!! They do make wonderful pets and I am glad that I got them. All 3 are laying eggs now and we are able to give surplus to the neighbors!
just put a safe place for these breeds if u hav so they will multiply and hatch eggs safely. make sure they hav a mini home for themselves for them to get warmed during cold seasons. this pets are sensitive i hav a bit of 130 bantam chickens at home now. i am breeding them well.
I live in Texas where winters don't get below freezing to much. They have a coop inside the pen (big enough for 4-5 chickens - I have 3) that has 1 solid back wall and screen around the other 3 walls. The pen is under some stairs that do provide protection from wind, rain, etc. fro 2 sides. Is it necessary to put some kind of heat lamp in their pen? At what point should I be concerned about the temperature? Do I need to put a quilt or something over the coop to keep it warmer?
Haven't figured that one out - I just follow them around with a paper towel and floor cleaner (ha). The older they get it seems the less they poop and the more solid and dry it is (gross) so it's not so bad to clean it up. It really hasn't been a problem.
Mine only do it outside. I think they are trying to get warm by laying on the sidewalk - not sure. We just moved them out to a chicken coup. I kinda miss having them in the house!
You would love them. The more you hold them the more attached they get to you. They are very easy to care for and don't run off! I leave thm in the front yard for hours and they are always there when I go to check on them.

@Nightshots Did you raise this chicken form a chick or an egg or did it just learn to follow you as an adult?
