when i hear this song it makes me think of the great classical masters and how it must have been before recordings... trying to teach people their songs with just sheet music; i'm sure a lot was lost in translation. even this song with the luxury of hearing the recording over and over, it's very, very hard to capture Duane's feel on this...
All I am going to say is, you hear this song, how fluent Duane was with that guitar, and it really makes you sad that he isn't with us today. All he accomplished by the age of 23 -- imagine what would of become of the ABB and music+guitar playing as we know it if Duane was still alive. Rest In Peace Skydog, you will always be missed. And just so everyone knows, I'm a 19 year old guy who plays guitar and cant even fathom how Duane did what he did.
@papasmurftw Good comment, but dude: you need to play this song. You can play it on one guitar if you tune to open E. Its actually pretty easy. I learned it this morning, and I can play it fluently now. So honor him by not giving up on this song :D
you're totally right on, bluegills2; people, listen to Leo Kottke's version of what he calls his favorite song. The Allman Brothers! No gimmicks, no bullshit, skilled enough to create instrumental masterpieces, acoustic and electric, and timeless rock classics like "One Way Out," "Whipping Post," and my favorite, "It's Not My Cross to Bear," ....which always hits me so hard that words of praise become meaningless. And, yeah, all the other songs, too!
Every time I hear this I picture myself on a canoe fishing a lazy river, thinking screw the economy -- I've got all the economy I need right here on the end of this line.
my Favorite tune Duane ever did...a work of pure beauty and genius.....Dr. Seuss said it best " don't cry because it is over, Smile because it happened " R.I.P. Duane, you are missed
Duane was to me, the greatest guitar player ever. He left a void in me the day he died.I was 16 and I'll never forget hearing on the radio that he was killed in a motorcycle wreck.I sat on my bed and cried like a baby. So,I cannot and would not take anything away from Duane but, give a listen to Leo Koettke's version. He does a superb job with it.
This will bring tears to any grown mans eyes. The world has never seen another guitar player like Duane Allman. What you can imagine, he could do on the guitar. And even more, he created. That's it... he created music, rhythms, tunes, tempos. He was the best.
@gervin421 people like Kirk Hammet and the dude from Avenged Sevenfold think that guitar playing is about speed so they play a tuneless lick as fast as they can. It's about sound and feel. Duane was king
@Django5198 No see ur a fucking idiot. Comparing a hard rock/heavy metal guitarists to a jazz/blues-rock guitarist is ridiculous the're 2 totally different players. You obviously don't like metallica, so u dont like that style of playing..... don't repeat everything you hear
@MrGeltabs I wasn't actually talking about what kind of genre I prefer. I just think that the guy from Avenged Sevenfold has no feel or soul (just my opinion btw). All music should have feel and soul no matter what kind of genre it is.
...though I was just 6 when Duane passed, I was raised on Fillmore vinyl and have grown to adore his guitar work. Now that I'm almost 46... the void seems to have just gotten larger. Someday, I WILL have my "Eat a Peach" mural! ..to you Duane
@rspahle I think this is the only song Duane wrote. Duane plays dobro, Dickey Betts acoustic guitar and there is a bass part played by Berry Oakely which producer Tom Dowd decided not to use. But on the Dreams box set which came out in 1989, they noticed it on the original tape and didn't pull down the fader on the mixing board like Dowd did. So on the boxset, you hear Oakely's bass track.
one of the best acoustic pieces ever recorded... to the fans that were around when duane was alive, im extremely jealous. falls just short of john butlers oceans as the best in my opinion.
Little Martha was Duane Allman's gift to we who have had to live since he left us. He wanted us to know things of beauty and peace. Fair winds and following seas my friend...
@jakks345: I love this tune, it is one of my all-time favorites, but do yourself a favor and look up the acoustic music of Doc and Merle Watson, who recorded many numbers every bit the equal of this one. The late Merle Watson loved the Allmans, and learned slide after listening to them.
this song is so pretty. makes me want to cry, really. what a beautiful piece. the great die young (hendrix, morrison, allman, srv). i hope they are really resting, we will never forget them
Trivia: Greg Allman and Dicky Betz stay in touch with Dixie and her husband Mike. This was written for Dixie before Duane was killed. He was a great talent, not finished with his music yet.

yes i 've thought the same things many times & practically cried.. why Duane at 24 yrs old..& you have Britney and all the media nonsense surrounding her circus life-style..it just doesn't seem fair..
Check out the interview in April 2007 Guitar World by Andy Aledort in which Dickey Betts remembers the who, what, when, where and why of Duane. Excerpt: "Why do you think it's important for people to listen to Duane Allman today? Betts: "Simply because he was one of the best there ever was. When you listen to Duane, you are hearing a truly gifted individual giving his all to the music, and there is nothing better than that."
Awesome song, awesome pictures, awesome use of Hendrix footage from 0:24-0:28 especially considering the story behind Little Martha. Thanks for posting!
Duane Allman. Probably the best guitar player in his time. The world lost when he left. The beutiful sounds we never heard. We can cherish the sounds he left.
I always loved the story behind this song. For anyone who doesnt know it . Duane had a dream where he talked to Jimi Hendrix and jimi was raving over a song he had written and proceed to show Duane by somehow playing the sink. When Duane woke up he wrote this song . He said this is what he heard in his dream. Funny story and a very awesome song.
I had an ex-boyfriend who could (and did) play this, just sitting around the living room. Unfortunately, it was his only redeeming feature. All that time spent mastering the guitar sort of precludes mundane things like...oh...having a job....
Having written 'Little Martha' at such a young age is indicative of his raw talent. This composition has been called the "perfect song". 24 year old southern boy who had some kind of gift....He left an impression that is still felt, especially in this song!
Fabulous tribute w/ some great clips that even I hadn't seen!! What always got me over the years was not only the beauty of thes tune and the fact that he probably laid it down as a little "ditty", but you can hear him breathing over the mike.Duane, my man. you go down with the many greats in music (not just guitar) in your short time here.
