  • Heaven must be like this!

It is sooo great to see all your smiling faces as I travel over an abyss of pure nothingNess on wings of silver and metallic blue...

  • Beautiful beautiful beautiful- I first bought this when I was 17.

  • Pharoah Sanders! -The Bass line is unbelieveable

Astral Traveling has my spirit traveling in peace

    Thanks for the post

  • You all need to hear Pharoah play "The Creator Has a Master Plan". Amazing!!

  • Pharoah takes you to a place you have not yet been...

    ~CWm

  • The late drummer in our band coined a fiting and often repeated phrase to characterize the stunningly beautiful outpouring of a musician's soul and spiritual feeling as is reflected on this classic track: "PURE BLISS!!!"

  • Beautiful and deep....Very deep

  • smooth like aged old brandy

  • deep

  • Thank You for posting it.

  • Try comparing it to Lonnie Liston's Smith "Astral Traveling." You'll be on a trip. :-)

  • I love this track....

  • So do I....:)

  • This recording increased my interest in astral traveling.

  • This is probably in my top 5 songs ever. Might even make top 3. So beautiful.

  • such a great tune...is he playing tenor or soprano sax here?

  • soprano

  • This makes my senses tingle, feel it through my body, such calmth.

  • Freein2339, you couldn't have anything BUT positive vibes posting, and listening to this great collaboration...

Pharoah & Lonnie Liston Smith are two of my forever favorite musicians. Pharoah always inspires me, his intensity, spirituality, and especially when he displays his gentle side.

Those unfamiliar with him, MUST HEAR his playing on Alice Coltrane's "Journey in Satchidananda", & "Ptah the El Daoud"..... magnificent recordings!

  • Thanks for your wonderful post...

  • Finally!! Her is a Cat who knows what he's talking about! Thank you. Journey is so deep, but also Alice brought in Joe Henderson with Pharoah on Blue Nile and shit! playing the alto Flutes, Tough instrument! split off in the channels left/right

  • @StevenCharlesJazz Well spoken:) I remember listening to this back in 69'. It paved the way for the jazz that would follow.

  • The reason why this song sounds so good is because of Lonnie Liston Smith's astral keyboard playing. Istill love Pharoah's sax playing in how it mellows with Lonnie's playing. That was how soul music was then; just to sit back at let th music take your mind out of your body.

  • I want to thank everyone for the positive vibes...

  • The best thing about it, these guy played without sheets. They were so in tune with each other, that they played off each other. That's when you know you are dealing wuth genius...Peace

  • Yep, one of my favorites...you could meditate on this...I'm a fellow SAXOPHONIST,and this and his other pieces definately INSPIRE ME!!!!!!!!!

  • such a sensous, beautiful piece.....thank you so much for posting!

  • beautiful and heavenly--Astral Traveling

  • this is incredible. pharoah is a god. literally, a god.

  • what is that squeaky sound in the background? i love it

  • Some kind of percussion instrument..Back in those days they used just about anything , seashells , water whistles , etc..

  • That is Michael White on violin.

I saw them live when this came out around 1971.

Go back five more years and listen to his work with John Coltrane to hear where he developed his spiritual side.

  • Incredible piece by Pharoah!

Criminally ignored musician who can blow anyone away

Sometimes you can still catch him on tour with McCoy Tyner occasionally for those lucky enough to be on the major concert circuits.

    Newcomers, listen to Thembi

Listen to Kulu Se Mama, Selflesslness, Live in Seattle, he's the end with John Coltrane

  • Thanks for the info...

  • one of his finest in my opinion, great track have on a "best of" series!!

  • I hear you ....

  • Who says the Impressionist period has gone now? Debussy and Ravel passed the torch to the likes of Pharoah'. And theirs are to be conceded -- whereas Santana's Caravanserai was the great essay of a piece, Pharoah's piece Astral Traveling is sheer poetry.

  • I'm glad you like the music...

  • This is really beautiful. I have been following the texts below with great interest. I admire Santana's Caravanserai, Welcome, Lotus, albums a great deal. I am also a great admirer of Alice Coltrane and John Coltrane. Really pleased to be introduced to this track.

  • No problem my friend..I'm glad you love the music...

  • SPACE IS THE PLACE

  • "A vast and endless freee"

    Sun Ra

    Glad you like the music...

  • this is the one!

  • Yea man...

  • This makes me feel like I'm astral traveling..What a beautiful, mystical song and artist.. I credit Mr.Sanders with help in saving my taste in muzik...

  • This will NEVER be dated. Timeless...

  • I agree....

  • This is in my top 5 favorite songs. So beautiful.

  • good astral traveling.

    Fazz Black

  • This is what we all need just listen and let go

  • If you're wondering where Santana got inspiration for Caravanserai, Welcome, Illimunations, Borboletta then have you figured it out yet?

  • Very good ear you have .....

  • You do Santana a small disservice I think they both found a similar spiritual path in their music but from quite different musical directions. Don't forget Leon Thomas was also a big factor, he joined Pharoah Sanders after recording with Santana and you can hear his influence in both artists' music long afterwards.

  • The way I remember it (I may be wrong), was that Leon sang with Pharoah before, Caravansari(Santana).

  • I just checked the internet, Thembi was released in 1971, Caravansari was not released before 1971, we all said that Santana got this from Pharoah, check your history. I do love santana/Caravansari, but get your history together.

  • @nakim55 Listen to this link and tell me it's not a direct quotation of Astral Traveling!

    watch?v=rI_cgYpREb8&feature=rec-LGOUT-exp_rev-rn-3r-4-HM

From Alice Coltrane & Carlos Santana's Illuminations

  • If beauty can be expressed through organized sound Then this is it

  • therapy for inside outside

  • What? Therapy....for inside outside?????????????????????? I don't quite...am I supposed to think about that..maybe I should think about it for a minute..OK!

  • Have not met a woman yet that doesn't love this tune...And the answer to your question...Yes it works...:)

  • Ahhh... 'My absolute favorite piece by Pharoah.
