Wow!!! Just love it!! I wish we had a music teacher as dedicated as you are to your students when I was growing up. It is evident in their singing and watching them enjoy it.
Absolutely beautiful! Joni Mitchell wrote this song for Neil Young when he turned 20. He couldn't go to a place called Sugar Mountain anymore. It was a Youth Club in Canada for 19 and younger. He wrote a song called Sugar Mountain. She wrote this in reply.
This is so precious. I work with kids at my church that are about this age, and if we were to have a group like this trying to sing a song together I guarantee that about half of them would be goofing off and poking each other. These kids were so well behaved! Good for them! And good for their adult leaders! Nice arrangement; I love the high harmony by the ladies.
This is a beautiful arrangement of the song with new harmonies at ends of the phrases. Children of all backgrounds singing together about the fleetingness of chilhood. The students become the teachers.
wow. these kids are so amazing. i am in many honors choruses and i wish i had been given the chance to be in something like this when i was thier age.
This is so wonderful! Children and song are so natural together--it melts the hate of the world for a precious moment. I wish it could forever, but take joy from this and hug your neighbour for goodness sake!
@bartonim - how beautific, such a wonderful rendition! - prolly make Joni wonder wether this should've been the "original" ('specially with some of the 'breakin' voices audible')
I love this!! Gives me hope for the future. Those children are so beautiful -- I would love to hug each one of them. Joni would certainly cry if she heard this
dear god........... if my teacher in elementry school had been THAT inspiring to her students, our chorus might have had amazing performances like this
they should go on tour! these kids are amazing, this proves that if you put your heart and mind to it..... as well with the right instructor... you can do anything!
Beautiful as always. It's kind of funny, because y'all have spoiled me. I'll hear your songs without having heard the originals, and when I hear them, I'm often almost disappointed because your kids' versions are better to me. It's not just their voices either...which of course are amazing. It's the raw feeling and emotion you can hear in them...it brings me to tears. Thank you so much for sharing this with the world. I really really hope you guys put out an album.
Amazing. I'm convinced that kids can do ANYTHING. Keep pushing them. They really need this. Music education is so important. You're doing wonderful work!
Oh Gregg, you have NO idea how much I needed this. You absolutely touch more lives than you will ever be able to realize. Thank you sooo much... We love you!!
Beautiful version of a beautiful song, and so appropriate for a chorus that changes each and every year ... such a poignant song for you to share at the beginning of yet another new season! You must miss the kids when they leave. because after listening to them do this song, I miss them and I don't even know them!
I look forward to hearing what you do with your new group. Best wishes for the 2009-2010 PS22 chorus, Mr. B.
this was SO AWESOME! i sang this song for chorus also, its always had a special place in my heart. love the arragement and also totally love that little girl in the back that was rockin' out to it the whole time. very adorable. thank you for sharing your videos with us. :)
thanks for including the recorded date in the info, mr. b hehehe. by the way, is it the standard in your classes that you have the soprano/tenor voices on the right side (your left when you're playing the piano), the alto/bass on the other side?
Several comments: I used to do this with my 5th graders (I was a classroom teacher)...it's one of my all time favorites; thank you camera operator for showing close ups of the kids; Greg (??), how do you get your kids to show emotion when they sing?; at 60 now, I'm certainly dragging my feet to slow those circles down - each circle gets smaller and faster as the years go by. (Of course, I don't want them to stop yet!)
We saw the first chorus video last year on the 13th of September, but they probably started school later this year due to labor day being the 7th instead of the 1st (in 2008). So maybe sometime this week.
i luv this song its my baby luliby. every time i hear this it brings back so many memories

The music program in this school must have great insights at how we can promote this experience for every single child. That would be "awesome".

well no tenors and basses yet in this group -- (voices have to change first) -- but otherwise, yeah, that's how we roll! ;)
