  • Topo was not the first to come up with this idea. Offroute, Inc started doing this around 2002 (I think). I started mapping out trails and backcountry data and sharing it with others on the web in 2004 through Offroute.

ExpertGPS gives you access to Topo map of the United States and aerial imagery at no extra cost and have been around for over four years. The GPX file you create can upload right into Offroutes system with photos and it is GPS friendly for people to download.

  • Topo predate offroute by several years. I have one of their older California state series that is 2001, and that was not the first version. The Maps on CD version was first produced by wildflower productions in a Mac only version. THey then went to the PC version, After several years Wildflower production was bought by National Geographic. I still have some of the Wildflower CDs.

Wildfowers / National Geographic were the first to come up with this idea.

    Delorme followed without USGS topos

  • NG is not the first company to come up with the idea of their customers creating a map and putting their own GPS data on the map before it is printed. They are also not the first to come up with the idea of a community website where folks can share data. Offroute started doing this very thing in 2002. That is what I was referring to above. Everyone know NG has been in the mapping business for ever sorry I didn't make myself clearer in the first post MagicJohn11.
