sir, you are a true visionary. i'm getting into home recording/production myself after seeing so many other people do it so badly. i don't make the same kind of stuff you do but i find your clips inspirational, encouraging me to not dismiss odd sounds or weird ideas simply because they seem trivial or useless. ive had some revelations simply by asking myself... "what would RothHandle do...?"
Thank you so much for your kind comment...it means a lot to me. I came originally from working as a musician in big studios where I got the feeling that sounds and production were very delicate fragile objects...so when I started recording I felt an urge to do everything wrong and work myself slowly towards right...I am definitely not there yet but I am having a lot of fun on the way...thank you !
you are welcome. most of what i do is using plugins and stuff, but i do try to make interesting soundscapes using guitars and such with some pedals i have built over the years...there is something to be said for finding sounds by using actual gear in ways it was not intended to be used.
I think it was Brian Eno that said in an interview once that in retrospect the only thing that is interesting with a piece of of equipment is it limitations...Distortion in a guitar amp etc...
I think a big eye opener for me was the Pod...everyone loved it but people generally used the same settings...the "sweet spot" if you will....
A lot of the equipment I use has a mind of its own...sometimes its flirty...other times it gives you a blank stare and walks out.
just goes to prove the point that NO ONE in dance music has ANY need for musical talent what so ever...since there are knobs and switches and samplers and a quantizer and it all comes out sounding the same any way....
technology has breed circuts that make mindless crap appear to be "music".....so sad.
personally i think the talent comes from 2 things when using pedals and "technology."
#1 would be the creative application into a musical contex. A lot of people can create a cool sound, very few can find an appropriate crutch to move it with.
#2 would be the actual idea of using ALL of the different technology to synthesize a sound you want. Because, as it turns out, it matters what order you put these in and you have to have the knowledge of knowing what you want and where to put it.
as for #1. if you copy cat everyone else.....EVERYONE will think you're great.
it is a sad statement...but the herd has spoken and the herd said that the herd is right about that point.
#2 synthesis.....I was listening to a buddy's dance track...and this great trumpet solo was washing through reverb in the mix....I said..>.WOW, GREAT PATCH....what keyboard gave you that signal....and he slide the trumpet case out of the book shelf and handed it to me.
that is really really cool. Is that only the MURF thats doing the rythym making? because if it did all that when you pressed the switch, I think I need to find one of those.
well...I don't know I have never gotten that exact request before...But my standard fee for the studio is 3500 swedish kronor a day...but then you can do pretty much what you want...Record pipe organs...scream into pedals...Record an album of black flag covers using only Mellotron Bees...well whatever you fell like...sort of.
Just for discussion...can't you throw a beat behind just about anything and it'll be an industrial song ? Or is that ambient ?
Man that's 72 tracks, how can that be assholish, that's un-assholishness at it's best, if you can fill a third of them up with lot's of wierd noises, you are all set.

Is it terribly commercial ?

no not really at all. they were more or less the "first" industrial band.. though that is their most popular song

I think they have started to make replicas of some of their equipment...sounds interesting...

So is the technology too good...or are the dance music musicians...too bad ?
RothHandle 3 years ago
WORDS "good" and "bad" are total and complete bullshit
there is NOTHING ethical or inethical in the quality of a sound
either you LIKE it: or you don't
my statement was about talent
...which...it takes NONE Of to press
a button, and twiddle some knobs until something comes out sounding like "music"
honestly I really like the end effect.
it sounds great, but it took NO TALENT to create
ability to us a couple 1/4" cables doesn't qualify as a talent...

Thank you for your kind comment.
I have never stated or implied to have any talent whatsoever.
But I do have some 1/4" cables. Guilty.
Have a great weekend !

Awesome, throw a beat behind that and you've got an industrial song.
How much is it just to dork around with your pedals for a day? :)
