is banjo picking exactly like guitar finger picking or is it slightly different in some way? it seems the same from what i can see, other than the use of the picks...

No, not exactly. banjo is tuned different and there is a high note on top where the 6th string would be on a guitar it'd be like having another high E there except it's a g.

the mechanics are different but if you like manipulating your fingers.. banjo is fun. guitar is a good pre-requisite but not an absolute requirement. some people make the adjustment fine other can't at all. some banjo players can't play guitar,  "crazy"
