You can't always think "I can't say anything that might be used to justify ill-advised behaviour". Anything could be so used. And in any case it's undeniable that Obama is successful. If he can be sucessful after taking drugs then in many cases, yes these kids could too. Are we supposed to deny this obvious fact for a false narrative where every drug user is destined for failure? How does that serve those who had a little period of low motivation and high drug use?
I think Obama would agree that drug usage is not a good thing. If he believes that it isn't a good thing for children to get involved in, why promote it?
he doesnt promote it. promoting it would be telling kids "oh yeah, i did drugs and now im running for president so you can do drugs too! its okay, really it is!" he's telling them about why they're bad and he's telling them he had a problem that they should avoid.
Drug abuse dulls our collective intelligence and our collective wit. America is only as strong as the sum of her parts. If our kids are increasingly abusing drugs, we are weakening our collective intelligence and therefore we are weakening our families, our economy and our national defense.

It's the polluted water, polluted air, and polluted food supply that is destroying everyone. If he has the knowledge, skills, attitude and integrity to be president he should be, if not, not. Judging him on his hobbies is moronic, do I judge Cheney on his being a hunter?
