I wonder if there have been studies done that break down the height of the rider vs like the 29er. I tried to get fitted for a 29er and the top tube was just too high even in a small. I am 5' 9"
Have ridden mountain bikes for 20 years, worked in the trade for ages and ridden virtually every brand out there. Have never loved any bike as much as my Superfly, (And I'm only 5' 4'')
@RBK855 okay, I stand corrected. I guess it's just an opinion thing. I'd always ridden 26ers, then I bought an x-cal, and I don't think I'll ever go back.
@lmbngtracer7975 I feel like I could ride either wheel size and be happy, but the marketing behind the 29" wheel thing really pisses me off. I still enjoy riding my 26" mountain bikes.
@RBK855 I guess "better" to you means " absolutely superior" .. to me, "better" means "relatively superior" which 29ers ARE. I have had six 26er's and two 29ers... I have a 2010 Gary Fisher HiFi Deluxe .. and i ride faster, technically superior and with less wrecks than i ever have before and im 43. 29ers ARE better. There is a reason they are outselling 26ers now and its not because of any kind of fad or fashion. ITs because they are generally BETTER. Yes, that's right, they are BETTER.
@RBK855 Sure, 29ers are not superior for everyone's needs, but they are for most peoples needs. The reasons they are better for most people's needs have been explained in this video. Even as the facts presented are valid, you refer to them as "bullshit science" simply because you personally prefer a 26" wheeled bike. Proving that information is false and having contempt for information are two different things. The only point you have made is that you prefer 26ers to 29ers.. Who cares?
Picked up a Cobia in May, MAN this thing FLLLLLYYYYYYYYZZZZZZZZZZ.
Very comfortable, perfect cockpit measurement right out of the box. Cant believe how fast this bike is and stable. Took a little getting use to seeing the front tire sticking out so far. The G2 is just a perfect concept.
i challenge everybody who commented about the disadvantages of 29ers over 26ers to go out and try the '09 Niner RIP9 or WFO9 and say the same things again. long travel full-suspension 29ers are changing everything and they're only getting better and better!
@SkodaMart a 29er isn't necessarily for big riders. Fisher makes 29ers for people as small as 5 foot. I'm 5'7 and I ride an x-cal. The point of a 29er is to speed you up with decreased rolling resistance.
Ordered my Gary Fisher X-Cal. I know they have talked about the taco/ breakage problem. the question you need to ask yourself.... What are they doing? IMO 29ers are pure XC bikes. While the FS is nice, it does not truly work on a 29er. 29er HT bikes are the way to go. they are not a replacement for AM bikes or big hit bikes.
If you're into serious urban assault riding, jumping islands, 4 foot platform drops, curb hopping, go with a 26" wheeler. I just bought a Gary Fisher 29" RIG a year ago.
I've taco'd 3 rims and cracked 2. There isn't a rim or wheel design that can handle the abuse.
Also, rim V brakes are more effective with 29" wheels.
Disc brake put far too much torque on the rim. You can actually hear the spokes pinging when braking hard under speed....just waiting for disaster.
I must update my pursuit on finding a fairly burly set up for
a 29er set-up. I'm running Schwalbe 2.4 Big Apples on Velocity Blunt rims, I switched from DT swiss spokes to Wheelsmith spokes laced up to White Industries hubs. No pinging anymore. I run the tires at 50lbs. I have nailed a few very sharp rocks and they seem to take it like champ.
Still, nothing grabs like a Magura V-Brake in the rear, but a vast improvement over completely destroying wheel set-ups.
Gary sold his company to the Taiwanese company Anlun in 1991. Anlun went bankrupt in 1993. Trek bought the name from Anlun and hired Gary to run the new division. Most people would say Trek *saved* Gary Fisher Bicycles.
I've been riding a niner for a couple of years and as money pluses as there are (better traction, better high speed stability, it feels as if you sit more "inside" the bike rather than "on top" of it). My wife is 5' 5" and I'm 6'4" and, despite what some people say, it works well for both taller and shorter riders. The only thing is that you effectively pull more gear inches than you would a 26". Rumor has it that Shimano is coming up with a new cassette for niners in 2010 however.
They work well for us roadies - because we are used to climbing with that wheel size and harder gears. But I still would want a triple crank on my MTB.
I am testing riding differents bikes that I am thinking about and I test road the Mamba in Blue. Its a pretty nice bike and it was my first time riding a 29er and I felt like I could go against anything with the 29 inch rims and the amazing shox.
Not that long ago we had a hard time persuading people to demo a 29er, now it's one of the most popular bikes with the some of the best feedback. 29ers rool!
Within the last year I put together two 29" mountain bikes, a Surly Karate Monkey and a Salsa El Mariachi (as a single speed). I'm a tall guy and a good amount over six feet and for me it's the way to go. The added air volume in the tires almost negates the need for shocks, a big plus in my opinion.
Tip: Build the lightest wheels and use the lightest tires you can find or not destroy - that's when the magic happens.
I wonder if there have been studies done that break down the height of the rider vs like the 29er. I tried to get fitted for a 29er and the top tube was just too high even in a small. I am 5' 9"

The whole argument is over with one sentence. 29s roll over roots better. You ride on roots (who doesn't)? Get a 29er.

@blah666ful
Ever watch a Danny MacAskill video? Highly skilled riders have more options than that.
Being proud of rolling obstacles is like being proud of riding the short bus to school.

@RBK855 You will always find situations where rolling is the only option.

@lmbngtracer7975 I own two of them. They're fun and all and they have their place, but they're -not- anything better than a 26" wheel MTB.

weight, cost, limited selection of wheels.
Once you ride a 29er it is hard to go back down. That is all I ride now,
