i remember seeing them on the old "carol burnett show" in the'70's. they are amazing! I am sorry to hear that lorene yarnell passed away after reading the other posts. RIP Lorene Yarnell & God be with your family.
I remember seeing this skit as a four year old and being scared to death. Nightmares followed which caused me to fall out of bed onto the hardwood floor. It was not a good evening.
ah, it was a different, simpler time. the energy crisis, nixon, agnew, fall of vietnam, boat people, watergate, the energy crisis, stag-flation, the recession, the rust belt, detroit gas guzzlers and rust buckets...wow, maybe things aren't that bad these days...
RIP Lorene Yarnell! She was truly amazing. Saw them as a kid performing in Union Sq SF before they went big time. Always a joy and definitely an inspiration that helped my robot dance through the years. God bless.

This is proof that a lot of people were high on drugs in the 70's when two people's only talent is to act like puppets or robots and people actually watched them and were entertained by it......
i do not believe i use to like this shit, but i was a kid then.
it's all just why? can't watch for too long and the sounds , music & people laughting just drives me crazy, damn what entertains some peoples is pure crap to others
I you appreciate the complexity behind robotics or built them, you will find this very very funny (unless you are a kid, then its funny to see adults or machines as clumsy as kids themselves!)
Man i used to love this routine. I just remmebered off the top of my head. It took me fifteen minutes of googling to figure out their proper names and find this vid!!
Damita Jo Freeman did the dance "the robot" on Soul Train in 1972 with James Brown. Look her up on Youtube. And she wasn't the first to do the dance called the robot. I think she learned from another street dancer named Charles the Robot. And I heard street dancers in Oakland, CA were doing the robot since the late 1960's.
Yea youre absolutely right, although it aired Robert and Yarnell publicly world wide. This dance was invented by a black man from the group called the lockers. google him, it will tell you. If you guys ever heard of Rerun" from the whats happening show" he was in the group also with Tony basil. Search Original lockers
I remember some other skits from Mac Davis specials, such as one in a grocery store. I would be quite surprised to see those on Youtube since those specials must be hard to come by.
I saw them at the Nugget in Reno years back. And expected the worst. But they just killed us all! Like Evil Kinevnel, they gave the world something we've never had since. And the make-up hides what's true. They are both two of the best looking people I ever saw...
He is a wonderful person too, very caring, and no he doesn't blink, but she does, they are no longer together as husband and wife, but still perform together, they look the same they haven't changed much at all and still just as brilliant.
I love the opening number where Skooter goes to check on Shields & Arnell and it appears Shields is so shocked she smears lipstick across her face. XD
Thanks Dizzrokn for putting a time line on it, stuff like that is very important because people think oh so much time has passed, that history can be revised.....na it's not happening.
And I got news for you Popalong ALL Great dance routines have a storyline a beginning,a middle and and end...if you don't believe me then just watch Salah!
robert sheilds owns the robot! he was a street performer in San Francisco before he ever made it to TV land. Union Square in 1976 way b4 soul train...it wasnt performed on soul train until at least 78 or 79.
All respect to S&Y they did influence many street dancers , but the robot as a dance was first done on Soul Train before the S&Y show came on tv. But after S&Y came to our homes , hell yeah they were a great influence and i love them to death. But they did theirs as skits and perfomances not as a dance . Much respect to S&Y .
No, let me clarify. I never said they invented POPPIN no way, that was guys from southern Cal.. please forgive me for the memory lapse but I don't know thier names. I meant S&Y poineered the cool/funny robotic characters w/blank face stare. Wow I'm seriously impressed with you Pecorino69 The other vuadevillian dance from the decades of 10s 20s 30s was refferred to as ECCENTRIC, good reasearch, you rock!
I watched U-min , let me clarify.........wheres the fucking storyline? its a bunch of guys doing syncronized movement that they PIONEERED........no acting or evolved storyline that would warrent anything but a stint on "So you think you can Dance" or "Americas got Talent".
Let me remind you that S&Y had an entire variety show built around them they did skits danced sang and did comedy all with guest stars of that era.......these guys are ESL poppers with no more
lol.. saying u min arn't as great cuz they are just dancers you might as well say all dancers suck cuzt hey they don't act and do multible things or have a tv show like shields or yarnell did... such a dumb thing to say
eat my words huh? listen to the greatest poppers from the 70s speak especially the soultrain dancers the lockers and other guys who started this style....they will tell you they were influenced by S&Y....anybody doing popping or robotting now is doing what they pioneered.
if you do a little research and you will see....peace.
i`m from that era and a forner street dancer. i totally agree that they brought it mainstream into peoples houses. but i dont agree that they invented poppin. lotsa vaudville guys, mostly african american "Hoofers" were doin it in the 20s and 30s.

They were silly skits but if you want to know what drugs can to you as president in the 70's watch and listen to Bush Jr. in his speeches.
