  • amazing <3

  • this piece is so nostalgic...one of my earliest memories is of my mum playing this <3 a life goal is to perfect it

  • he is one of the best musicians we ever had! His was to play seems to be such an easy one, I really like listening to him

  • What year?

  • i really like him. He has very good dynamics and vibrato.

  • awesome

  • Is that bald guy a midget or something? That violin is damn near as big as he is!

  • @polymath7 You damn idiot. That "midget" was and is one of the most respected cellists of all time. In addition, that is not a violin, it is a cello. Why are you watching this video if you do not appreciate his playing or can't even tell the difference between a cello and a violin. If you choose to watch a video like this, then don't make idiotic comments that will make actual musical appreciators furious off their ass.

  • @polymath7 This was a joke. I am well aware that Dick Cheney is not a midget.

  • Comment removed

  • @EmBurditt "Please tell me you're not serious!!!"

I'm afraid I can't do that; I already told you in all sobriety that I was joking.

Now, I'd think a midget would *have* to sit down to play a gigantic violin, just as no person of whatever stature would play a double bass on his shoulder.

But this is academic; as I said I know very well Dick Cheney is of normal size; nor do I see the slightest evidence he has hair.

But do please try to forbear my incapacity for more subtle observation.

  • Comment removed

  • @EmBurditt Wait, now you're telling me that's not Dick Cheney but some commie pinko?

I don't think I'm mistaken; I'm quite confident it was a joke. If you mean it wasn't funny, well, it *was* funny and I have the equations to prove it.

It is equally hard (nay, altogether impossible) to install the appropriate humor software in a mind neurochemically free of any sense of bathos.

    I'm sorry,I can't help you.

  • Comment removed

  • @EmBurditt It's not worthless; you learned a new word (and concept, one would hope): bathos.

You'd do well to remember it.

    Cheers ;-)

  • @polymath7 The first four outrageous statements by 'polymath7' are the funniest things I've seen in ages. Congratulations sir, or your comedic stylings

  • i want to blast this on a speaker large enough for the world to hear!

  • he is still the MASTER ,.......thank you so much Mister Rostropovich ... its just GREAT...we will miss you a long time ..

  • best part was the cadenza.

  • the interpretation is a little harsh, but he makes it work.

  • @thauglorimorgorous SCOREEEE! :D

  • best cellist to ever live? yes? no?

  • @Mizzles240 i guess there is no "best cellist/musician), it all depends on preference, but i like rostropovichs interpretations the best, especially his bach interpretations remind me so much of glenn gould, straight forward, fast tempi, nearly perfect in my opinion.

  • With all due respect, but look at Mr Rostropovich's left hand; I bet he was real good at masturbating

  • Oh, 240p we meet again.

  • When I was a child my father gave a present to my Birthday - CD that included this Cello Concerto with M. Rostropovich, English Chamber Orchestra and B. Britten as a conductor. I could listen to it all day long with love and passion, and these feeling, kept from my childhood come back to my soul, when I listen to the Master.

  • He actually starts at 1:28

  • Great piece, very well played.

  • Rostropovich impressiona.

  • @Ottozimerman for me Yo Yo Ma doesnt means anything. Rostropovich was the king, just look at the quantity of feelings he reflects, when playing c:

  • I'm so glad I clicked this video!

  • What a presence!

  • This guy is truly a cello legend. I'm supposed to be analysing this as an assignment, but how can I hope to when this group is playing- I can't think properly!

  • wow.. his Cadenza was.. Brilliant...

  • the grandfather of cello, rest in the heavens orchestra.

  • All'inizio del video il nome di Rostropovich è storpiato come tipica abitudine francese

  • I LOVE THIIIIIIS

  • Respond to this video... wow

  • I am completely in LOVE with his cadenza

  • I am completely in LOVE with his cadenza

  • one lone bass haha

  • Rostopovich was my teachers teachers teacher XD woot that menas im a 4th generation Rostopovich!

  • @jigglypugz holy shit, that's some standards to live up to.

  • @jigglypugz haha its the same with me just that my teachers teachers teacher was rachmaninov

  • @Nicholasr1996 then hopefully you are studying the piano because Rachmaniov is my favorite piano composer haha

  • @jigglypugz Me as well!

  • I like his playing. Just find that the playing by Trey Lee with Munich Chamber Orchestra in HK is quite similar.. However, the last part of them differ a lot.

  • incredible! there aren't enough words to describe such a work of art!

  • I watched just about every other recording of this concerto on youtube and the difference between him and every other cellist is his flawless technique

  • the violinist with the pageboy haircut - we're brothers (not literally, but in the sense that I am also a violinist with a pageboy haircut)

  • god, he's got some balls.

  • this sound more lyrical and rhythmical than any other recording of this peace. Respect to the great master Rostropovich your legacy will always be here with us. May you rest in peace.

  • this sounds a lot better than even Jacqueline du Pre's recording of this. Like if you agree?

  • i like how he shostakovichized it in the cadenza. lol.

  • @hurtyou123123

    More like Rostropovichized :)

  • Amazing, is the best

  • I always felt like entering a big, grand, golden, french hall whenever I listen to this movement of the concerto.....

  • What a guy! 3 people are deaf that have watched this, there is no denying this guy is amazing. even if you dont the music, you cant deny it!

  • he definitely puts a lot more intensity into each note compared to yo yo ma's version, but it feels like he rushes out a lot of the notes and doesn't quite gel with the rest of the orchestra. still very well played tho.

  • That is exactly how I play it in my frozen dreams.....

  • @spencertseng it's a Julius Klengel cadenza. And I can't ask him for it, he's dead.

  • @krummy54 actually, that is Britten's cadenza.

  • @jcello7 *Benjamin* Britten? Really? Interesting.

  • perfect nice nice....wow..rostropich is a greet

  • veteren! i wonder if there were musicians like this when this was written..??

  • it's like he has a button for vibrato and trill.

  • @krummy54 so true

  • what cadenza does he play?

  • amazing!!

  • I'm learning this concerto right now and decided to watch this for inspiration. That plan may have backfired- I will NEVER EVER be anywhere close to as amazing as this guy. :D

  • his cadenza was very interesting haha great use of harmonics that was awesome!! i love you rostropovich

  • El mejor cellista de todos los tiempos!

  • Got to learn this soon in the summer. I pray it could be remotely as good as this haha it's going to be hard.

  • Music; the one and only thing that binds peoples, races, etc. The one and only thing that people care about that no one fights about. It's the language that everyone is free to explore, agree with, disagree with, and just enjoy.

  • Why does Rostropovich only seem to get better as he gets older? No one else can.

  • He was his instrument.

  • This guy makes Yo-Yo Ma look like absolute crap.

  • @doug5220 Look, don't be so hard on Yo-Yo Ma. They are both good. Just leave it at that. I do like both.

    ;0

    :-)

    :D

    LOL

  • as far as I remember the best interpretation I've ever heard was the one by a Hungarian cellist and it was part of a documentary about the life of J. Haydn and presented by Peter Ustinov. Unfortunately I do not remember the name of that musician, but I remember him performing with an orchestra named Austro-Hungarian orchestra or something like that.

  • As usual with Rostropovich : technically just perfect, but musically there would so many things to say about his way to interpret it. Hence, if every interpretation is personal I must confess this is not my favorite. He is too rough for me. The cadenza is amazing, admittedly, but not very "Haydnian"... Is it the beauty of it ? As for me, I am not convinced.

  • @RenardTaquin: Your views are very acceptable. It's good to see debate over musical interpretation. I'm glad people care about music as much as I do. Music is the only language that anything/anyone can understand. Thanks for your comment.

  • Incredible!! the cadenza is just amazing=))

  • I really did not enjoy that cadenza. =( I enjoyed his playing very much so, but the cadenza itself.. not so much.

  • @Celloman4044 He's Rostropovich. He can do anything he damn well pleases. =)

  • @xbasket12x good point!

  • you people in the orchestra have no idea how lucky you were to have played with rostropovich before he died. *sob* ...... (i wish i could have done that. D: )

  • @deey16

    i feel ya

  • @tmack1337 try the Saent-Saens cello concerto, first movement! @.@

  • man i wish i was rostropovich

  • @deey16 Your technically saying you wish you were dead due to his unfortunate demise. An unfortunate loss, I have full respect for that man.

  • Bravo! Absolutely astounding. I have to say this is the best interpretation of the piece I have heard, and the cadenza was to die for. The man was a true genius.

  • Bravo!!!

  • Definitely my favorite movement but right now I am working on the 2nd mov't and I am slowly falling for the Adagio its gorgeous

  • I'm absolutely in love with the sound of his cello, anyone know what the cello is?

  • @SqueekyMonkey101 It's the Duport Stradavarius, c. 1711.

  • Great, powerful world heritage performance. Thanks!!!

  • I'm a novice of classic music but i think that at 1.30, when the cello comes in is too much loud.

  • @kingofloss90 ha well it is a cello concerto

  • Merci au compositeur, merci à l'interprète qui se joue de toutes les difficultés.

  • Awesome...

  • Heard this in the car on the way home from a long hot day. Just awesome. HAD to listen to it again. No one plays it like Misha.

  • hermoso

  • his cadenza is weird, yet awesome

  • he's good

  • NO WAY!!! Andres Segovia played the cello?!?! :P

this is awesome. I love his tone!!!

  • I am playing along with this video to practice my 2nd violin part! Great improvized cadenza!

    Thanks!

  • phenomenal

  • i love this song

  • Not too fond of his cadenza, but Rostropovich is one of my all-time favorite cellists.

  • A pure Master!!!!!!!!!...there are no other words to describe Slava then Divine, Perfect, Brillant, An angel on earth who played the CELLO!

  • @my4seasons1 you said it

  • he looks kind of like Chevy Chase.

  • すばらしい!

  • I personally prefer Fournier over Rostropovich.

  • Дирижер и солист в одном флаконе! Огонь!!!!

  • I will always love Rostropovich!! This is really amazing!!! The sound... so glorious, I'm crying of happiness!! Maestro!!!

  • I will always love Rostropovich!!

  • Greatest Cadenza by the way

  • Greatest Cadenza by the way

  • every interpret he makes becomes the best one that one could ever made ^^

  • I Love This So Much ♥

  • this is maestro Rostropovich! our recpect for him!

  • bravo! :)

  • I'm learning this :)

I love how he writes in his own cadenza at the end instead of following the written one. Superrr coolness :)

  • I'm using Suzuki book 9 as well

  • Great!!

  • i don't really like the cadenza but he's amazing :]

  • I think that he plays this much better than Yo Yo Ma.

  • @iuliusCaesar1396 agree..

  • @iuliusCaesar1396 it's cause yoyo ma's style of playing isn't really suited to the classical style of haydn

yoyo ma is more of a romantic style player

but yes i agree with you =)

  • @iuliusCaesar1396 Of course. This is a natural consequence of his being a much better cellist than Yo Yo Ma.

  • @iuliusCaesar1396

    Yes, i think so!

  • Miss ya, Misty!

  • this cadenza sucks compared to yo yo ma's.

but its just my opinion :)

  • only problem, is that the orchestra doesnt know when to come in when you've finished. and last time i looked, haydn was a modernist of his time. progress, my friends, progress.

  • is that any kind of DVD for sell with an specifical name to download it?

  • anyone know where to get the cadenza? as far as i know, it's not the original and was written by someone else and is available for purchase.

  • This is Britten's cadenza. There is no original - Haydn entrusted the cadenza to the soloist.

  • Grandissimo

  • such a beautiful piece :) im learning it and going to play it in may :)

  • I've never heard that cadenza before. Very interesting end to the piece.

  • i have until the 3rd of november to learn tis piece for my rncm audition. i cried when i found out :(

  • don't panic i think it's perfectly doable, but i'd advise you practice in a focused and disciplined way. good luck to you

  • thank you that means a lot . it is doable im having emergency cello lessons and omg its just so stressful theres about 13% lol that i cannt do atm the rest is fine but its all down to technique :) x

  • you're lucky, i wish i could play an instrument...

  • awe im sure you could learn ive only been playing cello for four years and im at this standard already its quite suprising. lol if u do get a book called abracabra they are so easy the learn instruments bye i always recomend them :P x

  • mmmm...i think i'll take your advice, ive always wanted to play the oboe or violin, im only 19 so its not like im too old, i think i'll go for the violin, thanks for the encouragement and i hope you do great on november the 3rd

  • I think you can do it. I learned this piece when I was 15 and now that I'm almost 20 I'm trying to re learn it. It's a challenge but its certainly fun!

  • Well I found out I only have 2 weeks to perfect this piece! I have barely learnt the first page. =(

  • mines on the elevens my composition audition is on the 3rd lol. i had another lesson today and my tutors fiance is the guy who shall e accompaning us all lol his name is harvey and hes is lovely. ive done the first and third page but in struggling on the very middle section of the piece now. im sure we will all do fine!!! they said at the RNCM to always think possitivley lol even though i havent been, have any of you's prepare any bach and what you doing for the second round? x

  • oh man i remember playing this last year in my youth orchestra... the second violin part was INCREDIBLY boring. but i guess it wasnt about the violins for once : P

  • I wish he hadnt died he was soooooo amazing.

  • i practice the part from 3:00 to 3:37 everyday for 12 hours a day and it is absolutely perfect

  • thats the orchestra part

  • Comment removed

  • does anyone have a good fingering for the part from 2:58 to where the solo stops?

  • Comment removed

  • A beautiful, polished performance

  • Master of a century

  • This is really the sort of beauty that leaves human beings speechless. All we can do is sit, silent, and let the golden light pour over our souls. Britten is not one of my favorite composers, but the cadenza melts into Haydn's glorious masterpiece, every last night filled with sublime light and perfection.

    Bravo maestro!

  • For some reason, I find this movement the hardest from the concerto.... But it's technically the easiest .. ?

But musically I can never make it work. Hopefully I can change this..

  • I don't think it's technically the easiest part of the concerto, the 2nd movement is certainly easier, but harder in interpretation.

  • I like his style, but i think he goes too fast for this movement. It only says moderato.

  • how on earth can you criticize Rostropovich... Thats rather hilarious

  • @Rossicus1

Not really: I like opera this does very little to me. But my taste is just as elitist as yours.

  • Ask Haydn how he would like a "Moderato"
