@polymath7 You damn idiot. That "midget" was and is one of the most respected cellists of all time. In addition, that is not a violin, it is a cello. Why are you watching this video if you do not appreciate his playing or can't even tell the difference between a cello and a violin. If you choose to watch a video like this, then don't make idiotic comments that will make actual musical appreciators furious off their ass.
I'm afraid I can't do that; I already told you in all sobriety that I was joking.
Now, I'd think a midget would *have* to sit down to play a gigantic violin, just as no person of whatever stature would play a double bass on his shoulder.
But this is academic; as I said I know very well Dick Cheney is of normal size; nor do I see the slightest evidence he has hair.
But do please try to forbear my incapacity for more subtle observation.
@EmBurditt Wait, now you're telling me that's not Dick Cheney but some commie pinko?
I don't think I'm mistaken; I'm quite confident it was a joke. If you mean it wasn't funny, well, it *was* funny and I have the equations to prove it.
It is equally hard (nay, altogether impossible) to install the appropriate humor software in a mind neurochemically free of any sense of bathos.

no me gusta mucho su interpretacion. sera muy maestro pero no es perfecta. toca muy rapido y al principio entro antes de tiempo......me se este concierto de memoria y se de lo que hablo...
@Mizzles240 i guess there is no "best cellist/musician), it all depends on preference, but i like rostropovichs interpretations the best, especially his bach interpretations remind me so much of glenn gould, straight forward, fast tempi, nearly perfect in my opinion.
When I was a child my father gave a present to my Birthday - CD that included this Cello Concerto with M. Rostropovich, English Chamber Orchestra and B. Britten as a conductor. I could listen to it all day long with love and passion, and these feeling, kept from my childhood come back to my soul, when I listen to the Master.
Rostropovich impressiona.
This guy is truly a cello legend. I'm supposed to be analysing this as an assignment, but how can I hope to when this group is playing- I can't think properly!
I like his playing. Just find that the playing by Trey Lee with Munich Chamber Orchestra in HK is quite similar.. However, the last part of them differ a lot.
I watched just about every other recording of this concerto on youtube and the difference between him and every other cellist is his flawless technique
this sound more lyrical and rhythmical than any other recording of this peace. Respect to the great master Rostropovich your legacy will always be here with us. May you rest in peace.
he definitely puts a lot more intensity into each note compared to yo yo ma's version, but it feels like he rushes out a lot of the notes and doesn't quite gel with the rest of the orchestra. still very well played tho.
I'm learning this concerto right now and decided to watch this for inspiration. That plan may have backfired- I will NEVER EVER be anywhere close to as amazing as this guy. :D
Music; the one and only thing that binds peoples, races, etc. The one and only thing that people care about that no one fights about. It's the language that everyone is free to explore, agree with, disagree with, and just enjoy.
as far as I remember the best interpretation I've ever heard was the one by a Hungarian cellist and it was part of a documentary about the life of J. Haydn and presented by Peter Ustinov. Unfortunately I do not remember the name of that musician, but I remember him performing with an orchestra named Austro-Hungarian orchestra or something like that.
As usual with Rostropovich : technically just perfect, but musically there would so many things to say about his way to interpret it. Hence, if every interpretation is personal I must confess this is not my favorite. He is too rough for me. The cadenza is amazing, admittedly, but not very "Haydnian"... Is it the beauty of it ? As for me, I am not convinced.
@RenardTaquin: Your views are very acceptable. It's good to see debate over musical interpretation. I'm glad people care about music as much as I do. Music is the only language that anything/anyone can understand. Thanks for your comment.

For some reason, I find this movement the hardest from the concerto.... But it's technically the easiest .. ?
But musically I can never make it work. Hopefully I can change this..

I don't think it's technically the easiest part of the concerto, the 2nd movement is certainly easier, but harder in interpretation.

I like his style, but i think he goes too fast for this movement. It only says moderato.

@Rossicus1
Not really: I like opera this does very little to me. But my taste is just as elitist as yours.

Ask Haydn how he would like a "Moderato"
