If you didn't know God or asked him to be in your life, you don't know God so you go to a place where there is absolute no God in which is eternal darkness. I'm guessing when he says this, what he means is, he loves Jesus because he was freeing the people from an even more oppressive religion at the time, and assured them there was a God who was willing to listen if only you spoke to him. At the time, he intended for the church to be an institute where the poor, outcast and guilty can unite as one in their love for this merciful God, and not have to hide themselves.

@ThisSongBumps The religion he would be referring to in this instance would be the evolution of the socio-religious societies who would use religion as a means to assert power and control. They would put in their own translations, their own writings, manipulate it so that it was in their favor. By now, the Christian faith would be NOTHING like the teachings of Jesus because religion has changed that much.

They believe that you have to do everything perfect to be saved or get to a higher level in your next life. Christianity is different from them because instead of having to do everything perfectly, God doesn't expect us to do anything perfectly. He knows that we mess up. He is still quick to forgive us.
