That was an apartment building in the Marina district of San Francisco that exploded in a fire when a gas line broke from the earthquake.

I remember the fastest way many people got home that day ,was to walk...Was the MUNI underground running or closed?

@casomarch - Muni Metro was out. No power. People had to walk to the nearest station to get out of the subway.

I was in santa cruz right when the earthquake hit it was pure hell, believe me>

I work right around the corner from here (California at Battery) and you can see the newer, patched up brickwork on that beautiful building.
