i have a fear of drains every time my friends drag me to the deep end i scream NO!!!! even in bathtubs im scared. i just wish i wasnt scared the people wouldnt make fun of me.
its okay just say thier hopless ideots and dair them to sit on one with a flat or no grate and theyl see when the pump shuts off that they wont have intestines. ha ha ha to the people who made fun of this person.
omg at my local ymca, the pool indoors have 2 stainless steel drains that are like 5'x5'! THATS SOOO SCARY! (yes they are compatible). the outdoor pool ,which is much smaller, has only 2 normal drains which are 12"x12". why would they have such large drains there!? thats soo friggan scary!

I'm a hotel reviewer. Dome shaped covers are not the only way to prevent people getting stuck on drains. Two drains that are spaced 36 inches apart will work, too. They are called "Split Drains." A lot of new pools are being built with them now.
damn that's scary I remember when I was 4 I would play with the drain covers but for some reason I never put my hand inside the hole. Thank god I didn't.
I seriously have to say that if someone were to throw me in a pool/hot tub that had that "votex" crap going on it it, I would KILL them, if I ever made it out of it. I would probably have a panic attack so huge that it would kill me before I could get out. Fucking scary. D:
I developed a fear of drains (including the pool nets, skimmers, floatie things that carry the chlorine tablets, jets, side drains, lights) whenever I was in a public pool in Alabama. It had a waterfall in it and was fairly large. I was twelve and I was alone, aside from my dad being in the hot tub, and they had two HUGE grated drains in the deep end. I swam over them and stared down and just listened to them, being curious, and I just heard the suction and a weird clicking noise. -shivers-
i have been afraid of pool drains ever since i was 4. and now im more scared than ever. there is even a pool in my backyard. i was at water country, and the lazy river had 3 drains that were like 4 feet wide, and 10 feet in length. when i touched it, i immediately lifted my foot from the drain, and i just had to get out and never go in again
I've been afraid of pool drains since I was around 3 years old when I slipped on one in the pool and felt the suction. I didn't get stuck but the shock of it on my foot scared me so badly. When I was a child I developed the drain phobia which made me terrified of the pool, but now that I'm older it's gotten a little better. I don't go swimming much nowadays, but I can somewhat enjoy myself at the pool and have fun without worrying so much. =) However, I doubt I'll ever fully get over it.
I was recently at a water park in Maryland and the lazy river had a huge grate kind of in a tub kind of thing and a pipe was pouring water into it while another pipe was sucking water from the river like a freakin whirpool! you could hear it! it was just a huge plastic pvc pipe curving about 5 inches into the water.
I was also afraid of the drains but i got over it simply by; asking the lifeguard were the drain was, and staying on the opposite side of the pool, or just hanging onto the wall. Its simple
I was with my dad 2 years ago at work, he's an electrician, and I was sitting there playing my PSP. I went into were he was working(inside pool) and the drains in the spa, he said were sucking a 1200 gallons a minute. There was a HUGE whirlpool in the middle. It LITERALLY had 8 drains in it. 4 on the ground, and 4 on the sides. I don't fucking understand why it had so many. May I also add they weren't the safe drain covers, but the fucking huge grate drain covers?
I love how she says your playing with fire and then there's a lit candle under the picture lol I was a victim i was sucked to the bottom of a pool when I was trying to get over my fear of drains l but when i was down there i was with a freind she saved my life my arm was stuck i got away with a very bad bruise but i refuse to go in a hotel or pool without a new safe drain cover.
@passsword95 Can you tell me what it was like to be down there like that? knowing your worst fear has just come true? My worst fear is pool drains and i have devoted 2 years of my life to research on them.
@DramaticMoments As much as I dont like drains, the point of the system is to filter water. With out it the water would be terrible and would make you sick if you swam in it. I dont trust public pools since they are kept by 16 year olds who dont know how to handle the chemicals. This just supports my opinion all the more. Glad to have a nice inground pool right in the back yard.
There is a simple way to eliminate the problem. In fact I think now this is mandatory. Basically, drains need to be installed in pairs, with the suction line teed off so that the suction is split between two drains, spaced several feet apart. This way something can't get stuck to one, since no pressure can build up. Unless the pump is extremely strong there shouldn't be a problem.
i seen a movie that was made in 2002 but i just can't remember the name,,, anyway a kid was stuck at the bottom of the pool by the drain for a long time and someone pulled him up and a bunch of blood just hosed out of his mouth and he died then the hospital said his lungs exploded,,,,
Wait I thought those were always off until draining a pool and wen the pool was running the water got sucked in through the filters on the sides of the the walls u kno the square filters
Ever since i was a little girl i have been afraid of pool drains..i saw this on TV and it made it even worse... so everytime i go swimming i can't go in the middle of the pool because im scared of the drain... and i went to the public pool and almost drowned so that made it a lot worse but the drain didn't cause it..my friends don't understand what i feel and why i feel that way...and i don't think i do either.. im just really terrified of them!
@j15andh9productions Same i dont know what caused my fear either, i dont think alot of people do. I hate it when my friends are like ' Aw come on down to the deep end' cause thats where my local pools drains are and i have to keep saying no ive got a bit of leg cramp ill stay up at the shallow end :/
Ive always been terrified of pool drains! The clip of the drain witht he whirlpool really freaked me out...i mean...could you imagine that?! soooo powerful!
The drains are built engineered for specific flow rates (gallons passed through per hour/minute) These drains are also domed in order to prevent the body covering all the inlets. While it is still possible the likely-hood of an entrapment is very low.
my public pool is horrible, the drains are black so they look scary, i have a fear of pool drains, and i don't wan to go swimming anymore, its wrecking my social life cause my friends always go swimming and now i don't go. all of the pool videos are in america and i live in the uk, my public pools are rubbish and the drains look scary which made my fear worse since i have only had it a few months, about 8 months
in some olympic size pools thare black and the purpose for this is so maintenance can see whare thay are so if thay ever need to go down underwater and work on them thay will know whare thay are, a pools filter system cycles water just like your home heating furnace dose with the air threw a network of duct pipes with a return end it when the suction becomes over budget on the return end is when it can get vary dangerous newer pools have two drain boxes for this reason to even out the suction
half newer pools out thare don't have drain boxes at the bottom of the pool sins thare not only thay can be some what dangerous thare actually a vary ineffcient way for both draining and returning water to the pump thay use just the skimmer as the return for the pump some newer pool that do have a drain box it will be in a form of a bar grate coverd channle located down the sides or in the middle of the deap end the suction pipe is tuck away behind a plate that runs the bottom of the channle
This is exactly why I'm afraid of swimming pools. Ignorance, lack of motivation, and plain stupidity on the parts of these pool owners/operators. I mean seriously, holy shit @ 2:10!
Isn't a simple solution here to either not run the filter while people are in the pool, or to shut it off if someone is stuck to the drain? Obviously, no one wants anyone stuck to the drain...but I'm not sure why we're battling a filter that can just be switched off, or why they never mention in this report that the filter simply not being on would prevent this from happening as well? ... Oh yeah, that wouldn't sell $40 drain covers...

The law expects unreasonable immediate compliance, is vaguely worded, and applies mainly to pools that already have entrapment safeguards... not to private hot tubs where Virginia's death actually occurred. Also, statistically, the number of drownings by entrapment per year is less than 5. Not enough to warrant the millions of dollars this is costing in retrofits. A far more significant concern at these pools is the lack of a LIFEGUARD. Bureaucracy and media panic at it's best.
gnargnargnar 3 years ago
its actually more expensive to have a life guard. a typical retrofit for a standard hot tub at a hotel is about $500-$800 for a retrofit.
