The A380 has now superceded the iconic, but dated 747. It does everything better and cheaper and flies more passengers in greater comfort than the Boeing. Sales alone prove the international airlines prefer the Airbus offering. Now four years into commercial service it has flown 15million pax and has exceeded the expectations of both passengers and airlines alike. A great technical achievement.
@BOACMach2 Yeah, the A380 is really comfortable, quiet, economic and efficient, but you can't deny that it looks like a fat whale compared to the elegant and iconic 747.
@ClaymoreQuickScoper I'd agree with you there but would also add that any twin deck aircraft is going to look bloated. I doubt passengers are that fussed by the external appearance; they are more concerned with the flight experience onboard and versatility of the cabin. Airlines focus on what the aircraft will do for them in terms of profits & flexibility, not what it looks like. I seem to recall the original 747 was deemed "ugly" when compared alongside the 707 and VC10 but perceptions alter
@BOACMach2 That's partly the reason the 747-8 was developed, but it wasn't meant as an A380 competitor, not directly. Both aircraft serve different purposes – the 747-8 is a reliable workhorse for long-haul routes, while the A380 offers improved economics and better passenger comfort. It's still not as widespread as the 747, due to how new it is. That's why the 747-8 is supposed to be more quiet with new engines, and more comfortable because of a stretch, but it just can't match the A380...
@ClaymoreQuickScoper I recall Boeing originally marketing the 748I as a 400srs replacement for the likes of BA, United, Lufthansa, Korean, Emirates, JAL etc. but only LH and KAL have bought into it. The BA decision to switch to the A380 and retire its 400 fleet was a real setback for Boeing. I have read United Continental are considering the A380 for its trans Pacific routes, given Asian airlines are beginning to draw custom away from the US airline. Seems its not interested in the 748I. Odd!
The problems the A380 has had so far are not typical of a new aircraft, they far exceed the industry standard. And any aircraft that has had wiring problems should go back to square one and be totally rewired from one end to the other. Fires in flight are unacceptable and the A380 has already had a couple and numerous more A380's have been found with burnt wiring .
@shamrock608 no actually.. the beatiful.. 747 can win the A380 any day!! its big at the same time light! and not to big. yeah. the A380 looks like a flying brick!! its just way to big. which means its heavier. and slower!!!

Folks I don't know about you but I personally still feel safer on good old
747 with half a century of best safety record in aviation history. While new,
exciting and fad A380 start appearing cracks on wings in multiple A380 in
such short a period of times ever since coming into service.

Wouldn't know. Might catch up with an A380 some day. I care more about the cold drinks and stewardesses' looks - Thai Air recommended.
One day you'll grow up kiddies and understand what's important in life.
