where do you get reeds for her? the tone is a bit too quacky. as a professional, maybe she's not putting the taller half of the two sides of the reed on top. and if she would try loosening her grip on the reed, her sound would be much better. she also needs a bigger airstream and not to bite too much. but she has a lot of potential. good luck with your further endeavors.

The reed as people have already pointed out was far too hard. The Oboe was also problematic.

She uses appropriate reeds now and has a good Oboe which has helped with her sound so much.

If she's looking for a new "challenge" of instrument then might I suggest the Cor Anglais - a perfect fifth below the Oboe.

Wherever you're at there's always a long way to go. Being a multi-instrumentalist makes it even more difficult. Ensemble playing means you get pulled in directions you may not otherwise have gone.

I think she's beginning to understand now the level of committment and practice required to keep going.

I think her read is immensely hard!

She would get a more controlled and beautiful tone if she played on a softer reed. She would also feel less exhausted after playing :) I used to play on really hard reeds, but now that I have been playing for a while, I have learned to go a bit softer.

But Wow! she has such tremendous potential!

wooden ones (particularly loree's) are best, but the wood cracks, Buffet has Greenline oboes that are made out some weird material. They are not made out of wood, but they don't crack, and they sound pretty good.

I think it was plastic lined, not sure about the whole thing. We gave it back over a year ago.

ya you can execute the song well but.. it is not about how good you can play the song. its about the enjoyment of music. so basically you should probably work more on having a natural and beatiful sound too but that is still very good for your age

She has been playing almost 4 years now and is approaching Grade 7. Her sound is nothing like it was in the videos, a decent oboe and harder reeds have changed everything.

The word for it is embouchure. People who actually know what they aare talking about will tell you the two problems with her playing at this stage. Other than an Oboe that even her Teacher couldn't get a decent sound from. The issues are Reed (too hard) sight reading (which is more or less what she was doing).

To reassure you quite a large part of this piece is supposed to be played in one breath.

The new Oboe is not professional lol.

I knew what the word was, just no idea how to spell it. I've been playing oboe for 5 years. I've won competitions. I know what I'm talking about for the most part. And yeah, some oboes are just crap. I tried out over 15 before I picked my new one. Any, she plays pretty well for a beginner.

Hate to be mean, but that hurt my ears...badly. New oboe should help, but if you were to get some good reeds, handmade ones, the tone would be loads better. Also tell your daughter to keep her left hand somewhat curled it will help move master. Lastly tell her to breath, it seems as though she was stuggling for air.

Of course you have every reason to be proud of this young lady! My daughter is just now learning clarinet, and making sure she practices is not easy. But you are right, a little bit each day, this is the way to approach it. Best of luck to all of you!

She sounds really awful compared to how she plays now. a new Oboe definately helped with sound, this one is only a cheap plastic/wood one. Her sound got better form the beginner stage and then got worse. Hope your playing improves - Stick wiht it.

Bravissima!!! I have many young oboe students, and I can tell you it's not easy to play like she does!! congratulations!

Just an advise... try to use the metronome, at least in the beginning, it will help her to have control and will improve her technique!

Berni I must apologize to you and to your daughter: when breathing, the reed rests on the lower, not upper, lip. I don't know what I was thinking... She does it right (in the other video).

No worries! I think it happend because she was trying to get part of it in one breath as it's supposed to be. she had barely begun working on it with her teacher. She had much more experience of the other pieces when they were recorded. The whole point of them is to get constructive feed back.

What you might monitor (no stress please):

- fingers are still too soft; first phalanx needs to stay convex for better control.

- breathing: NO breathing through the nose (the video is not very clear whether she actually does it). When breathing, we part the lips - the reed stays in contact with the upper lip! - enough to exhale (as you correctly say) and inhale frankly and, of course, fast (the diaphragm does the work, not the lungs)

Oboe's are quite hard to get used to blowing but they don't require lots of air. Oboists have to breath out stale air before they breath in again.
