where do you get reeds for her? the tone is a bit too quacky. as a professional, maybe she's not putting the taller half of the two sides of the reed on top. and if she would try loosening her grip on the reed, her sound would be much better. she also needs a bigger airstream and not to bite too much. but she has a lot of potential. good luck with your further endeavors.
Then she gets all of the deserved congratulations from myself. I'm a university student of studying performing arts - one of the three areas is music and i'm only grade 5 piano without grade 5 theory!
Well done to your daughter! Keep it going!!
If she's looking for a new "challenge" of instrument then might I suggest the Cor Anglais - a perfect fifth below the Oboe.
Wherever you're at there's always a long way to go. Being a multi-instrumentalist makes it even more difficult. Ensemble playing means you get pulled in directions you may not otherwise have gone.
I think she's beginning to understand now the level of committment and practice required to keep going.
She would get a more controlled and beautiful tone if she played on a softer reed. She would also feel less exhausted after playing :) I used to play on really hard reeds, but now that I have been playing for a while, I have learned to go a bit softer.
wooden ones (particularly loree's) are best, but the wood cracks, Buffet has Greenline oboes that are made out some weird material. They are not made out of wood, but they don't crack, and they sound pretty good.
ya you can execute the song well but.. it is not about how good you can play the song. its about the enjoyment of music. so basically you should probably work more on having a natural and beatiful sound too but that is still very good for your age
She has been playing almost 4 years now and is approaching Grade 7. Her sound is nothing like it was in the videos, a decent oboe and harder reeds have changed everything.
i thinks she is doing a good job^^ no offense, but the sound of the reed reminds me of those rennaissance ranketts, maybe because they are also quite soft reeds
The word for it is embouchure. People who actually know what they aare talking about will tell you the two problems with her playing at this stage. Other than an Oboe that even her Teacher couldn't get a decent sound from. The issues are Reed (too hard) sight reading (which is more or less what she was doing).
To reassure you quite a large part of this piece is supposed to be played in one breath.
I knew what the word was, just no idea how to spell it. I've been playing oboe for 5 years. I've won competitions. I know what I'm talking about for the most part. And yeah, some oboes are just crap. I tried out over 15 before I picked my new one. Any, she plays pretty well for a beginner.
Well, she is pretty good with her fingerings, but she has gotta put a firmer 'O' shape embouchure to obtain a better tone, but she'll do good alright!
Hate to be mean, but that hurt my ears...badly. New oboe should help, but if you were to get some good reeds, handmade ones, the tone would be loads better. Also tell your daughter to keep her left hand somewhat curled it will help move master. Lastly tell her to breath, it seems as though she was stuggling for air.
Hi i play oboe, but im only a beginner and i still cant remember where to put all of your fingers lol you got any tips, by the way she is amazing you must be proud, i bet she'll be on tv in a couple of years!
Of course you have every reason to be proud of this young lady! My daughter is just now learning clarinet, and making sure she practices is not easy. But you are right, a little bit each day, this is the way to approach it. Best of luck to all of you!
I'm sorry to the person who commented on her practising sitting down, I accidently deleted the post. I didn't have a big enough tripod for standing up lol.
I agree the sound is awful but a new Oboe cured some of the problem.
I play oboe, I've playing for 3 years and I'm doing my AMUSA (associate diploma of music austrailia) diploma....... lol OBOE RULES NO ONE HAS THE GUTS TO FAIL YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lololololololololol
i play oboe too!! i love it! everyone says im so good. i am in 4th grade and i play with my brother (clarinet) and he is in high school, but i dont like to brag. haha i love oboe its funn!
WOW! You are great!.How old are you?My daughter is 11 and has done Grade5 violin,Grade1 piano and can play the flute.Hope to do some videos of her soon.
I am french, I play the oboe and I find that play it you very very well. I would like to know how long since you make it? (desolate if my English is not very good)
She sounds really awful compared to how she plays now. a new Oboe definately helped with sound, this one is only a cheap plastic/wood one. Her sound got better form the beginner stage and then got worse. Hope your playing improves - Stick wiht it.
Berni I must apologize to you and to your daughter: when breathing, the reed rests on the lower, not upper, lip. I don't know what I was thinking... She does it right (in the other video).
No worries! I think it happend because she was trying to get part of it in one breath as it's supposed to be. she had barely begun working on it with her teacher. She had much more experience of the other pieces when they were recorded. The whole point of them is to get constructive feed back.
- fingers are still too soft; first phalanx needs to stay convex for better control.
- breathing: NO breathing through the nose (the video is not very clear whether she actually does it). When breathing, we part the lips - the reed stays in contact with the upper lip! - enough to exhale (as you correctly say) and inhale frankly and, of course, fast (the diaphragm does the work, not the lungs)
Thanks for the advice. Problem here was a very hard reed that she wasn't used to playing on. She had not played the piece before this recoding either.
sorry, i said i did this for grade 3..! i just had it in my head! sorry! i am practising this piece at the moment and i find it quite hard (esspecially the bit in the middle!) well done!..xx
great work! good work for such a young age...good to see a few young oboe players on here. Good luck ! and hope that your future oboe playing is wonderful :)

Thanks for the advice!
The reed as people have already pointed out was far too hard. The Oboe was also problematic.
She uses appropriate reeds now and has a good Oboe which has helped with her sound so much.

Sounds like a tough situation to be in. Keep at it you'll get there.
These videos are almost 3 years old. There's no time at the moment to do new ones just too busy.
She has started playing Cor Anglais lol.
berni9361 2 years ago
Ah, well if these are three years old then she must be a hell of a lot more talented than she is on these!
I've got videos of me playing music but compared to your daughter, i'm mediocre!

Ive been playing for 6 years and I am still grade 4, doing grade 5 next year.
This was very interesting, as it seems so unlikely that you are grade 5 at such an early stage! Fantastic"
One criticalitationality: The sound was awful! Perhaps it was the camera or something!
One other criticalitationality: Sniffing. Breathe with the MOUTH!

She's a great talent!
serge919 4 years ago
No worries! I think it happend because she was trying to get part of it in one breath as it's supposed to be. she had barely begun working on it with her teacher. She had much more experience of the other pieces when they were recorded. The whole point of them is to get constructive feed back.
berni9361 4 years ago
beautiful! I just started oboe and I am in 8th grade! I can't imagine playing it when I was in 5th, it is really hard to get used to.
carlyxnichole 4 years ago
What you might monitor (no stress please):
- fingers are still too soft; first phalanx needs to stay convex for better control.
- breathing: NO breathing through the nose (the video is not very clear whether she actually does it). When breathing, we part the lips - the reed stays in contact with the upper lip! - enough to exhale (as you correctly say) and inhale frankly and, of course, fast (the diaphragm does the work, not the lungs)
serge919 4 years ago
Thanks for the advice. Problem here was a very hard reed that she wasn't used to playing on. She had not played the piece before this recoding either.
berni9361 4 years ago
Oboe's are quite hard to get used to blowing but they don't require lots of air. Oboists have to breath out stale air before they breath in again.
