This is the engagement where the warthog Nello Santi tried to undermine the emerging superstar. Note the sluggish tempo in the cabaletta. Nearly 50 years later, Nello's conducting still sucks, although he'll never rate more than a footnote mention in the history of this greatest of prima donna's.
Can you imagine having to sing this aria the night of your mother's funeral--3,000 miles away? Muriel Sutherland died suddenly in London the day before her daughter was to make her first New York appearance in a concert version of "Beatrice" in February, 1961. Offered the option of cancelling & flying baclk to England, Sutherland said, "Mum'd kill me if I did," and made a triumphant New York debut the following night. Talk about Aussie grit!
And Sutherland's aunt assured her via telephone that her mother would have wanted her to honor her commitment, according to what Sutherland relates in her autobiography.
@bobzeschin The performance you reference is available. It's the New York debut at Town Hall. I own it and would HIGHLY recommend you get it. It has a better cast than here, the sound quality is superior, and she's utterly incandescent throughout.
...In the cabaletta of course. Purely enjoyable throughout nonetheless, as always. No surprise.

A lovely piece of music, always liked it, and it matches well to the Sutherland instrument.

IMHO Beatrice is most probably the most amazing Opera ever written... Maybe Borgia and Semiramide too!
