  • So has anything even changed at all? I don't see any police horses, riot gear, dogs or Budweiser trucks around her, so I guess maybe they have a little.

  • I will never date a guy aga, or have male friends, i've been hurt soo bad soo many times, it is my fault. I'm too kind, genorous for any man.

  • I've seen a few clips of this movie over the years but now I have to watch the whole thing. LOL It does seem like a genuinely sad movie though.

  • I think at some point in our lives there was someone, who we loved, and there is a big "if"..it slpped away...what if!...thats life!

  • I watched this with a lovely girl friend back then. That was the way we were. We were both doing radio commercials for an agency. I slept through the show and slept with her after the show.

  • Can you imagine an american movie like this in 2012? A communist girl loves a soldier? And there were a lot others. Intelligent movies with social and political awarness. What happened with the American culture and filmindustry after the 80s? What went wrong? Today everything is God bless America and so stupid correct. We loved the way you were.

  • My mum made me watch this when I was younger too and I've since forced all my friends to share my pain! It gets me every time, I always end up sobbing uncontrollably, but I just can't help myself. Even just thinking about this film can bring on tears. uh. 'Only when i'm absolutely forced to'. sob.

  • @gemmajsmith i just watched this for the first time. SO dissapointed in the ending. I wanted them together. :(

  • This movie and this scene used to me my all time fav, until my sister pointed out that he walked away from his daughter just because the mother is a pain and hard to live with. I wanted to kill her when she said that, but she was right:( still a great movie..it shows that sometimes, love is not always enough...

  • This scene always made me cry, this and the scene where they first made love. I too will forever be the 'curly' hair girl, and proud of it. Glad she was able to continue her life as the person she was always meant to be.

  • @SimplyGH I love this movie. So many scenes made me cry. I especially love here at the end when she leaves first, and Hubbell feels compelled to follow and continue the conversation. It is clear that only their differences kept them apart. The love is there in broad brush strokes.

  • @50patrice I knew I adored you, and I am not surprised you loved this movie as well. But, I do agree Patrice! The hug at the end showed so much tenderness, and love that they both still felt. We all wish love was just simple, but it's not. I like to believe that 10 years down the line both of their spouses died, and they found their way back to one another. I know it likely didn't happen, but a girl can always hope.

  • I'm 21. I'm not here because of Sex and the City or Gilmore Girls or whatever. I'm here because I watched this film for the first time when I was 11 with my mom and fell in love with it. And now, I'm remembering my mom, who's back home. And this song. :)

  • I love this movie, but I never understood why Robert Redford's character let someone else raise his kid.

  • When Robert Redford was young, he was probably the cutest guy in Hollywood.

  • you never give up...

  • I would never give up either if the young and handsome Robert Redford was anywhere near to smiling at me... sigh.

  • one of the saddest endings I've ever had to live through.

  • I cried along with my mom when she said, "Your girl is lovely Hubble, why don't you bring her over for a drink sometime when you come?" and when he said, "I can't." and then she said, "I know."

  • ES UNO DE LOS FINALES EN LOS QUE MAS HE LLORADO,

  • ROBERT REDFORD ACTUA COMO LOS DIOSES Y MAS ENCIMA TIENE QUE SER TAN GUAPO!!!!UN SEGUNDO SOLO UN SEGUNDO ME GUSTARIA VERLO Y AUNQUE ESTA CON SUS AÑOS ...ESTA COMO EL VINO.

  • does anyone else notice the BAN THE BOMB signs? :)

  • I'm here because of gilmore girls lol

  • If you watch the WHOLE film you'll know just how poignant this scene is! I cry every time I watch it. Two incomparable actors.

  • Tέλειο!!!τέλειο....

  • GREAT SYDNEY POLACK CREATION!!!!!!!!! A MOMENT TO REMEMBER. STREISAND-REDFORD. .. MAGISTRAL

  • Bogie did this better at the airport a long-ass time ago. Its called 'Casablanca'. You did see this, right? Lovers have been saying these lines to each other since the beginning. Rhett and Scarlett? Fields and Hanks? Where have you been the last thousand years anyway?

  • who are they talking about at 4:03 - 4:11?

  • @WOWZZZZZZZZAS

Their daughter. They parted after being together for years while she was pregnant with his child. Its all in the movie! Its one of my all time favourites, but then again;I am a 41-year old sentimental fool.......

  • this sounds kinda weird, but this film hurts me in a good way

  • I hate the end of this movie,I watched when i was very young, and Im still mad LOL... Why she did not say something to him like, she have a good father like you never will be to no one....or,selfish motherfucker....or something instead of see ya?

  • I laughed so hard when carrie samantha miranda and charlotte started singing that song.... I almost cried!!!!!!! I ♥ Sex and the city!!! This movie is pretty awesome too....... ♥♥♥ :**

  • magistral!

  • -'I'm a very good looser.

    - Better then I.

    What such a sad sentences!

I love Robert Redford in this movie, but I am just 31 years old now.

I would have fallen in love with Robert Redford if I had met him, when this film was made.

  • what was the line he said at the end afte she said he should bring his girl over for a drink?

  • @SW33TI316 I'm not sure which one you have in mind.

Try "Show more". I'm pretty sure you'll find what you need : )

  • @SW33TI316 he said "i can't come katie. i can't" then she replies "i know"

  • @SW33TI316 "I can't do that" to which she replied, "I know."

  • @SW33TI316 He said he can't.

  • @SW33TI316

    I can't I just can't you know that.

  • Thumbs UP if you think Robert Redford is the most gorgeous man EVER :)

  • One great love, two separate ways...

  • I'm just watching this. I heard the song when I saw her sing it on tv. I didn't know there was a movie to it..now I want to see the rest of it. Just started crying because I can relate...even though it's been a long time it still hurts because I have experienced no other love or person so pure. He is married now & has a child & was planning on meeting up so I can see his sweet little girl. I'm afraid that all the feelings will come back & I sense he is afraid too as he keeps putting it off..

  • i love this!!!!!

  • I am currently watching Sex and the city, they just mentioned, so I came straight here to watch this part, ahaha

  • @xxbitchykimxx me tooo exactly same reason:):)

  • @xxbitchykimxx same here

  • SATC

  • Thumbs up if you are NOT here because Sex and the City.

  • @mrmcel thumbs up for sex and the city for introducing this awesome movie to younger people who didn't have older adults suggest it to them!

  • @anahata58 Fair enough! I agree. Older adults should be introducing other people the things we've loved!

  • @mrmcel i must admit i am... i was watching the 2nd season

  • This movie is my life. I'm in love with someone who is the so different from me and although we love each other, it could never work. We just live in two different worlds. It is heart breaking, but hopefully, I'll find someone else like Katie and live happily ever after with him instead.

  • Robert Redford reminds me of brad pitt

  • @mergejr, I think it is actually the other way round, BP reminds us of RR, whom he conciously imitates.

  • @Annazayla Do you mean in the movie or what happened in my own marriage? If it's the latter, I'm not going to go into that.

  • @rolltideroll388 we should, be we aren't

  • well, not always wins love... :S I wish this movie had a happy ending... now I'm a bit disappointed :S

  • @pricelessgirl02 That's life, honey, a long film that rarely ends with a happy ending.

  • @mrmcel :S Unfortunately :S But at least somebody truly loves, unlike others :)

  • I love this movie the ending is sad but he realizes he could never be in her world nor she in his again. Then Hollywood wouldn't stomach it and now well things have changed thanks to Barbara Streisand & Robert Redford. Thanks for this beautiful video.

  • This ending is so sad, especially when he asked about his own child. By, asking her if she has a good father is letting her know tat he is never going to be a part of his child's life.

  • those were the days!!

  • "Still married?"

    "Sure!"

  • i cry a little at the end of this everytime i see it... fantastic movie!!! it was out before i was born but it's one of my all time favorite movies, definitely a classic. Sex and The City didn't have to bring me here.

  • sex and the city season 2 finale sent me here!!!

  • this still makes me cry.

  • Only two such wonderful actors could say so much, with so little words. One of the most powerful scenes ever shot in a movie. The regret, the love, the passion, the mistakes, the life they had together.

  • omg he looks like brad pitttttt

  • this is why these two actors are considered the best! they're performance in this movie brings people to tears. this is why movies are made--to show reality not just make believe!

  • haha yeah saw it on sex in the city but I do like classics and my mom was a huge Barbara fan so I do wanna watch this one. Wow and Robert look hot.

  • haha yeah saw it on sex in the city but I do like classics and my mom was a huge Barbara fan so I do wanna watch this one.

  • Such a beautiful song brings such hurtful memories. This reminds me so much of my ex husband, i miss him too much and I'll always will. I felt in love of a pilot when I was young, he was my same age we meet in college. It was all so beautiful at the beginning but we were not compatible characters , we tried for long to make it work but he decided to quit..even if we had a baby girl. We are too vulnerable when we are in love:( I still love him.

  • @gabriellelethe Time heals wounds. It's a part of life. It doesn't always work out the way we want it to. At least you had the experience of being there.

  • Gah! Every time I se this I can't help but bawl my eyes out!

  • @Ignorance96 gah?

what kind of middle class crap is that? piss of back to boden.co.uk

  • So many tears

  • I love Robert Redford!

  • everytime I watch it i just cry it,s so moving so sad but whata ending

  • So sad ending, impossible love! Great film, and actors.

  • So sad ending, impossible love!

  • @rolltideroll388 damn right!

  • struggente!

  • 3.15p. - 4.01.p-ig (!)

  • I love, love this movie and I loved it way before sex and the city, which is amazing too, but in a whole other category.

  • its so sad :'( I adored Redford in this....

  • EVERY TIME...urghh how does this movie manage to make me cry every single TIME?

  • This movie makes me cry every time I watch.

  • @rolltideroll388 @mixityourself Most important, now that you are here you should watch the movie... it's absolutly lovely ^_^

  • this part of the movie makes my heart ache :(

  • @yogoqueen After I watch this scene my heart feels heavy and my stomach tight - excellent chemistry, acting, and story...

  • @Annazayla i dont know if katie completes him i didnt say that but she pushed him to be the best him and she knew he had so much talent and could be doing way more,he just wanted to play it safe, so he found a safe girl, who im sure he loved , but im say becuse they couldnt be togetehr and had nothing in commen (there ideals/personalitys)all they share in commen is there memories of the way they were which was in love

  • Hey Hubbell, good luck with your boring barbie wife and the lifelong regret that you never made an effort to be a father to your own daughter.

  • i think anyone who found love and for some other reason they couldn't be together and they have to let it be, can feel this scene and understand it so well.which makes you wonder " maybe there is hope in the future?"

  • hubble...hubba hubba =)

  • The kid he asks her about, is it his? Now I have to try and download this from somewhere!!!

  • they are politically incimparible. thats why they split up

  • @80enana In my opinion it´s because of who they really are..it´s not just politics..but the way they saw the world, the way they lived, the way they were...absolutely different..that´s why they didn´t make it in the end..even though they´ll probably love each other forever in a way...

  • Ahhh, Robert Redford is perrrrfect

  • its a classic.

  • ONE OF THE FEW MOVIE SCENES.......

that can always bring a tear to my eye.......

    even after all these years.

Thank You for posting this very special

    moment in film history.

    Billy.......

    :-(

  • Hubble looks Brad Pitt-ish

  • @PandaLeeee Same here! I even went back to rewatch that episode just to find out the name of this movie.

  • @PandaLeeee ahahahhaha thats the same reason i downloaded it!!!

  • It´s all about who they are! They are so different! They couldn´t make it even though they loved each other so much! I ´ve been in such a relationship! The most important thing ever is being yourself and they couldn´t be themselves around each other..that´s why they broke up..I´ve been there..it´s really hard..but there´s no other way..you gotta let it go...Heartbreaking, but hard reality!Cause one day you´d realize you lost yourself!

  • Are they outside the Plaza Hotel?

  • @juliekstroup

    Yeah...

  • @juliekstroup just like sex nd the city!!

  • SO SAD THAT PEOPLE GIVE UP ON LOVE, IT IS HARD WORK.

  • @poeticsoul16 Yep. My ex-wife certainly "gave up." Worse yet, she never really even tried. : ( I've heard a lot of great things about this movie, but I'm still hurting emotionally from my divorce back in 2009, and that's why I haven't watched this movie yet.

  • @PandaLeeee same here.. haha

  • Thumbs up if your here because of Sex and the City

  • @mixityourself thats exactly why im here lol

  • @mixityourself Most important, now that you are here you should watch the movie... it's absolutly lovely ^_^

  • @mixityourself haha =))) its true :))

  • @rolltideroll388 Amen to that!!!!

  • I can't believe that I just saw this movie, which was recommended by a friend! I'm so glad I did because; it really helped me understand my pass situation and yes, "love just ain't enough". Such a great movie!!!! I loved the fact that Katie stayed true to herself!!!

  • Hubbel was just a weak lovely man unable to appreciate the beauty Katie was. What a heartbreak.

  • Absolutely heartbreaking, yet there is something beautiful about the ending.

  • Still makes me cry. Somewhere tucked inside of us is a love we can never forget, a love that could never be.

  • i think they didn't end up.they're gonna meet again each other.and the same thing again.

by the way I;m because o "sex & the city "too.hahahaha

  • your girl is lovely Mr Big..!

  • Lol, im here beacuse of Sex and the City! :-D

  • @PandaLeeee hahahhaha me too !:D

  • Carie & Mstr. Big

  • Band the (nuclear) bomb, no more Nagasaki... There were anti nuclear demonstrations in Japan and Europe, especially London. I had no idea you had them in the United States in the 1950s. Visit Hiroshima to learn about the fallout. Thank you Barbara Streisand.

  • to me it felt like Hubbell never loved katie for anything other than the way he looked in her eyes, that he was just a nice guy who didn't know how to say no to Katie's love for him and ended up loving her for loving him, loved her for being passionate. she loved him because he showed her that he had layers, even if he choose not to explore them. but i never felt that they belonged together. it could never work cuz they cant change for each other and they shouldnt

  • @666fuckwit if you think he never loved her you really missed the point, there star crossed lovers , the whole ending is they both relized he was at his best when with katie, and no one will ever believe in him or see as much promise in him as she once did.the problem was there ideals were diffrent and they were comitted to them and there ideals clashed, there fore keeping them apart. The past is behind them all the two share now is a memory of the way they were which was in love

  • The face of Redford when seeing Katie in the other side of the streeet....

  • Watch the film, tbh something very similiar has happened to me

  • Hubbell is the most romantic man and Katie loves him. Anyone woman who has ever loved a man so desperately and then lost him understands this film and the pain! It never goes away....even if he does.

  • so damn sad :(

  • I adore how ambivalent an ending this movie has, because so often life is painful and unfinished and ambivalent. HOWEVER. How could he say "no" to seeing her, when they have a child together. My heavens. It's the only flaw in this amazing tearjerker. Pollack rocks.

  • make me cry damm it :)

  • Yes...there are ALWAYS two sides to the story, but their love did not work out, because she was more passionate about "her causes" than she was about him. In prior scene he asks her "not to go to Washington,DC" and she responds "I can't ....not go"

That was a moment in life for him that was important for her not to go.

Ladies - it is that one or two times...when you should compromise if you want to keep your man. Therefore - the sad ending was obviously coming someday.

  • I feel bad for the person they are with now...cause they know they can never live up to the love Hubble and Katie had...

  • What an ending of this classic film. Very sad indeed. Thanks Kathy for sending. *******

  • I cryied so much every time I saw this ending. One time I saw it with the love of my life. I know he'll watch this video again one day alone :)

  • It is so sad how he decides to leave even if he did love her. He was the center of his own world, he was too selfish to give his wife and daugther what they needed. They had problems not because she was "too complicated" she had many good reasons to be mad at him, he cheated on her.... . At the end he seems to have realize he made a huge mistake by leaving the love of his life, he though he could get better somewhere else but found out he was wrong, So sad:(

  • entré a ver esto solo para saber a qué se refería un capitulo de sex and the city jaja

  • just a beautiful and sad movie....

  • Omigoodnesss.

    They Belonged Togetherr !

    iCriedd SOOO Muchh,

    its Not Even Funny!!

This Just Shows You That You Cant Always Have A Happy Ending //:

  • What year does this take place in between

  • @cookidoh093 So to answer I would say it was1936-1953.Opening scene 1943 or 44, College scene,1936-39, USSR sent troops to Spain in 36.Campus peace strikes 36-39. FDR dies April 1945, WW2 ends Sept. 45, In California 1946 we see a billboard as Redford drives into studio grounds for the movie, "The Best Years Of Our Lives." It debuted in late 46. McCarthyism, trial of "the Hollywood 10," 1947. Katie pregnant in protest scene. He left at Baby's birth months later.

  • @cookidoh093 Also, TV was huge by 1953 and he tells Katie he is writing TV scripts as a profession in the final scene. Their daughter would have been about 5. So, even though their college years were in the late 30's and the ending scene was mid 50's, most of this movie takes place between 1942 and 1947.

  • at 3.46 - you know that she only had to say his name atthat moment and he'd follow her to the ends of the earth

  • To this day, I have problems with Robert Redford for leaving Streisand..... I know it is only a movie... but he broke her heart.....he is evil.... but he is an actor in a film... but I stil have trouble seperating Redford from Huble...... he made that role so real......

  • I cried to this movie, will never forget it! x

  • Their love became subducted to the "realities" of life and the needs and wishes of the people around them. The quintessential motion picture about love and romance between two very intellectually different people. I'm no romantic, and it goes through me like an emotional earthquake every time I see even a small part of it. They were unhappy, and yet...they make us want to be like them, somehow. ;]

  • they had different interests, as I remember, she was very political

  • each time I see this secene and hear the song it reminds me of my ex-husband and I was a tragic love story

  • @jcpnw I think you hit the nail on the head, he didn't want to be as "involved" as she was with all the political issues in life and like his story he wrote in college, "A Country Made Of Ice Cream", everything always came too easy for him, to have kept up a relationship with his daughter would have been too much for him to bear, seeing Katie and her would have torn him down.........

  • they didnt have anything in common ever but love we do forgot the bad times and remember only the good ones when its convient

  • This scene is beautifully directed!

  • I hate how Hubbell just gave up on having a relationship with his daughter

  • @chellywelly07 I know! That would be a completely different issue today. I don't think audiences would have accepted it.

  • This ending scene is wonderfully performed by both actors. I am moved and very sad each time I watch this scene. Both fall in love with each other despite their differences but you feel even at the beginning that these same differences will end up by drifting them apart.- A very enjoyable film, a classic of its kind with real politics in the background. The end is sad but it couldn't be really otherwise to be realistic. Let's don't forget the touching song "the way we were" performed by Barbra.

  • I think she smothered him and he couldn't live with her....

  • Why did he leave her? Did he love her?

  • Why did they break up?

  • They were both from different worlds -waspy, upper class guy vs. middle class

Jewish gal. Katie had an A type personality, and always challenged Hubbel. To make life easier, Hubbel dropped Katie to marry his own kind [trophy wife]. Sad indeed.

  • Hey, I don't want to admit this, but I watched this film about six times after breaking up with my first girlfriend at the age of nineteen, after being together for four years. The film is about 38 years old now, but has aged well. It tells the story of how two young people who are drawn together in love are drawn apart by their different views and beliefes. In short they were just not compatible, I think that's how we describe it in the 21st century! If you haven't seen the film, find a copy!

  • I sang the theme song in a choir when I was at university but never saw the movie. Gosh! I cried buckets with the ending. Now if I sing the song, it will be of longing... guess not all stories end with a happy ending. Thanks for the upload.

  • I haven't seen the movie... Can anybody tell me: Why aren't they together in the end?

  • @tschoui90

    Well...

I guess sometimes love just ain't enough to keep two people together.

I guess because -- exactly like in real life -- not all stories have a happy ending.

If you ask me, I hope you never _have_ to find out the answer to that question.

    Trust me on that.

  • @jaxlarus tu chez!
