Personally, after hearing this a few (hundred) times, I really like how the sax player fit in with this. It's definitely not something everyone would put over this, but then again who only wants to hear exactly what you'd expect?
@Guitfiddlejase the alto dude was filling in. i feel like once they started going that dude had a crash course in rhythmic feel. i think the dynamic was, "this guy is technically insane... now lets show him how much better our feel is." once dave and foley start to turn it on it's like their saying "ya, you just ain black enough for this bud."
@flamingbalsac1 yeah! I found that out on another post from this show...pretty crazy that he was filling in and got as far as he did huh???
I know what you mean about "Feel" though...sometimes,he seems a little lost in the headlights.Kudos to him for standing up there with these dudes and playing at all.
I would kill for the opportunity to play with these two!
@flamingbalsac1 Alto player feels good to me. Fuck the idea of being 'black enough' for a type of music. He went hard once these guys gave him an opportunity to, and was respectful of the bond that chris and foley clearly share.
@jbowers56 the alto player is really good, no doubt. but i think it feels like foley and dave try to put him in his place a bit. both of them (especially dave) are strait gansta, and they just wanna show him whats up. i cant remember if its this tune or another from this show where dave actually yells "play hard.... like play HARD and shit!" they just want him to loosen up.
He has achieved a different kind of success. Not monetary success but the advancement of the craft and the formation of his own distinctive style. And If I understand what your argument is, thenChris Dave is just like justin bieber in that Chris Dave is a Superstar in the drum world.
@Midnightpitbull2 no need to swear buddy. I studied music for four years at one of the top music schools so I do. It's just, like, my opinion man. I've played with better drummers than this. Just sounds like he's losing his place all the time and playing loud just to cover his mistakes
@TehWinnerz it ashamed they never taught you time signatures in those four years. chris dave never loses time through out this video and if you havn't noticed he's playing really intricate rhythms too.
@Midnightpitbull2 yeah well you can go and think I'm stupid but I'm the one with the degree in music brother. And I know someone just trashing around on the drums rather than fools like you who think that it's actually meant to be like that. I laugh at you!
@TehWinnerz WOW!!! You just made me laugh...if you knew who Chris played for you wouldn't be saying this comment because the gigs he's played require him to be extremely solid and he's known for his innovative sense of time and pocket which isn't proven in this vid but when he's playing for artists like,Eryikah Badu,Maxwell,Kenny Garrett,Pat Metheny just to name a few he's solid. Heck he was even featured on the front cover of Modern Drummer Magazine.
@TehWinnerz LOL 2 gigs a week huh? Cool Story Bro....Google is your best friend just take the time to google Kenny Garrett...you'll see he won grammys and played sax for people like Miles Davis....
@TehWinnerz You sound alone here....I'll pass up your offer lolol I'll listen to saxman by the lonely island because he's been playing at the age of 2 weeks old. Jack Black said so.
@Moog167 something like that?? were you just trolling about Chris Dave then? you seem like a guy who knows some stuff? It's pretty funny that all these people think he's great?!????
@TehWinnerz actually I think Chris is a great musician....he doesn't sound like everybody else....plus he grooves hard when he chooses to. His resume speaks volumes about him as a musician as well.
If you don't like him fine....but I dig his playing. If the people at Modern Drummer magazine gave him a front cover scoop and he's featured on drummerworld...yeah who are you to say he sucks when the majority says he's a skilled player?
Gee, this has totally wrecked my head !!! i only just got the damn Miles version down !!! This is a bit like a modern day Ornette Coleman type vehicle.
dude, what the hell is wrong with the sax players playing? Sure, it's out. Really out. But maybe being harmonically correct wasn't the idea. I thought he sounded badass. 2:20-3:30 is fucking intense.
LOL, that's the one & only Foley from Miles Davis' band
