I learned the next morning it was the street of mariachi bands - and you could see taxi cabs picking up individual groups for parties and weddings.

It was a very interesting experience (and I had an shave at the barber shop across the street - with the barber using the old-fashioned straight razor). The area looked a bit like Gastown in Vancouver but was much cleaner and very friendly.

The mariachi actually started in the mid 1800's. It wasn't untill the 1940's that the trumpets were added because of the golden age of Mexican Cinema
