you know when you were a little kid and you heard the ice cream truck music coming from blocks away and your heart started racing, i think this is the adult version
I love the wail from those 2strokes. There somthing else!. The only other diesel engine that sounds good is the Scania V8 from Sweden (when they have straight through exhausts). The rest are muted.. Great vid sir..
My dad drove semis but wasn't a fan of Detroit engines; the only one he had anything positive to say was regarding the 6v92-they were reliable and a hard-working engine. The 71 series both the 6 and v8 he said were ok. The 8v92 he didn't care for at all. Maybe he knew someone that had one and it was a lemon but regardless the 8v92 was always one of my favorites
Don't get your hair all out of place. You're just 25 years behind everone else, that all. Do you buy your oil by the drum or the gal. I heard that you can get oil now, in 100 gal drums, maybe you can save some money that way. Have a nice day and remember, HOLD IT ON THE FLOOR.
You listen buddy, That 500 HP 8v-92 that you have, Can't even keep up with a NTC 350 cummins. And don't tell they will because I've had them both and I know what I'm talking about. Now If they were so good ( and I liked them ) they would still be on the road, don't you think.. Don't go in a truck stop with the older men and start braging on them, because the MEN that know trucking will think you are NUTS like I do buddy. Go shift your gears and hold it on the floor and hope you get there.
@1979peterbilt I ain't trying to say nothing, Im only 14, but a guy I know was a trucker for 30+ years and he said that the detroits where great sounding, but back in the day they leaked oil, where HARD on fuel, a little underpowered in the lower rpm range, and really didn't have a lot of torque. I know he drove a 318 and I think he drove a 6-71, amung others. He says the cummins had the ideal balance of power, fuel, and longevity but CAT lasted forever and had hella power and low end torque.
@2strokedetroit everybody has there opinions. But there all good when there new. I was driving one around a yard when I was 9'. I could shift a 6-71 with 2 quad boxes, no clutch, double clutch, hand thru' the wheel shifting both sticks, and or them combined by the time I was your age. My dad sold the truck wen he was over the road. The guy came to pick it up and couldnt even start it. I went outside and he laughed. But after i fired it up and pounded 8 gears in seconds, he stopped laughing quick.
@cobra96svt570 Like I said, I aint sayin theys bad, (better than all this new emission bullshit is) I was just sayin what I had heard. I was only driving skidsteers and trackoes at 9, you were a damn lucky kid! I've now driven A international 4700 with a 7.3 Powerstroke, A ford f700 with a 5.9 cummins,(wich KILLS the powerstroke in the low end, no doubt) and just about any peice of equipment you can name. Did you hear the bullshit about ford not offering a manual anymore?
@1979peterbilt Im with ya, I drove a 72' WHITE with a 6-71 an 2-quad boxes hauling loggs out of P.A an haulin lumber from mills to the lumber yards. That detroit will scream all day! you cant kill'em. Who cares if it leaks a lil' oil. They all leak when they get hours/miles on them. We borrowed a guys mack, and then a pete with a CAT. And neither of them could pull a wh*re off a piss pot. There all good engines, but if the sound of a detroit dont give you chills/goosebumps, its not for you,
You are 26 and you have never had one down, have you. The reason they slobber is because they are weak on comp. They helped the 92s and they were the best, but they weren't anything up against a Cummins of the same HP. In the old days you had Detroit, Cummins, and Mack. Cat came out in the late 70s I think and truckers were a little slow on buying them. Cat are a good engine, a little hard on fuel, but they run a long time. For my money, give me the Cummins, they'll put more money in the bank.
@kennethrobinson11231 With all due respect to my elders...I am not 26...I have had a 71 or two apart ...weak compresion may contribute to some seepage...BUT most "slobber" would be the result of the operator...and the designer...had a Cummins or two apart also...and a Cat...and a Mack...and all of them put money in my bank...Jim.

@1979peterbilt I've had them all. Every Detroit I had would use and leak a GAL. of oil a day. Some CO. that had them, didn't even change the oil because they used so much. 100,000 miles and they had to be overhauled. I always liked the sound but they didn't have any torque like a cat or cummins I;m 64, have been with trucks all my life, and I KNOW WHAT ALL IF THEM WILL DO. Why do you think that they quit making them for trucks.

I can't belive this. The engine sound is what got me and couple buddies while in the scouts. We would go by nearest highway while at camp to see and hear trucks going by. @NCBHunter Same here. My dad had a 71' WHITE constructor, w/ a 6-71 an 2 quad boxes. It was great, I would hang my head out the window and listen to the stack.
If the sound of a detroit poundin gears dont give you goosebumps/chills, then it aint' for you.
The first time I drove it, I was 11'. He'd let me drive it around the lumber yard and pound a cpl gears. One day I slamed on the air-brakes, it bucked and started blowin smoke out the intake He go's JUMP! kidinng, and he kill-coked it.lol
Good man Tiety, when that pick up passed you I would have done the same thing keep your foot right in it so that all he sees in his rear view mirror is nothing but the grill. Be cool on your stool !
He's not revving it that hard, and no you don't have to rev the ring out of it. Thats a misconception with GMs, many say "drive 'em like you hate 'em" which simply wastes fuel. My coaches have mechanical (not DDEC) 6v92TTA and the peak torque is around 1300rpm. In saying that, they will glaze the pistons if you dont use high idle, and carbon will burn onto them if they're not revved out every so often. My drivers are told to change gears normally at 1800rpm (but it varies due to the spicer box).
Do you have to use high idle all the time or just when warming up? I heard that you get the best fuel economy when cruising at the rpm where you get the most torque is that true with GMs as well?
Use the high idle when the vehicle is going to idle for a while, more than a few minutes. They do use slightly less fuel if you keep the revs down, but carbon deposits build up on the pistons so it's best to rev them out a bit. Plus they sound awesome with full jakes on in a built-up city!
do you have to run them Detroit's wide open to get power out of them becuase it dont seem like them old screamers have much power but they sure are awesome to listen to!!!
You have to beat them, because if you lug them like a four stroke diesel, you'll seize them up. The old school rule is slam your hand in the door and take it out on the motor!
Well its a two stroke motor so all the power is in the top end not like the 4 strokes where all the torque is between 1200 and 2000 depending on the engine
I remember in Europe in 20 years back have heard a lot of noise with nothing to see on the road and the light was illuminated :GMC Astro 95 car haulers importer american car, same sound same thrill . I told my wyfe between a night in bed with woman beautiful chest and buttocks and an hour at wheel of Brigadier, Brigadier I choose .

Hello,I remember ,in Europe 20 years back have heard a lot of noise with nothing to see on the road and the light was illuminated :GMC Astro 95 car haulers hte importer amerian car,
same sound same thrill.
I told my wife , between night in bed with woman beautiful chest and buttocks and an hour at wheel of Brigadier , Brigadier I chosse.
do you have to run them Detroit's wide open to get power out of them becuase it dont seem like them old screamers have much power but they sure are awesome to listen to!!!
true, they are rather gutless as a tuned dodge pickup with the 5.9 in it can doubble the power of a 6-71 but nothing sounds like a detroit as my fav is the dirty dozen 12v71tt
No, for some reason everyone seems to rev the ring out of them. My coach has a 6v92 with a straight 6" dump (very unpopular with passengers up the back, great advertising though; everyone looks!) and I don't take it over 2000rpm. You don't have to. Our's peaked out with 1900Nm Torque at 1200 and 420HP at 1700rpm (yes, 6v92!!). Rev them out every so often to keep them clean, but don't bust its arse! It wasn't that they had to be driven hard, it just that they could take it so everyone did...
...420 hp ...6V92...probably flies too, this particular truck has "advertised" 577 ft lbs torque (SAE Gross) @1200 RPM, 210 hp @2100....hardly a fair comparison...Jim.
At the farm I used to work for back in 2000-2001, there was an '84 GMC Brigadier with a 6v71 and dual straight stacks. We pulled a hopper bottom hauling corn with it. On a clear day if the wind was blowing right, you could hear that thing take off at the elevator 3 miles away. I miss that old beast...
Bloody better than some 4 stroke engines, ie Cummins - but you do have to look after them a bit more! Running the correct lubricating oil is VERY important! They can gunk up with sludge, which is 90% carbon! They have to be de-coked regularly by hauling a heavy load for a few hours - this avoids the sludgig up of everything, which results in a very costly rebuild!
Hell Yea!!! This is a freaking killer video right here!!! Sounds unbelieveable!!! reminds me of the movie Maxiumum Overdrive!! #1 movie! More videos please!
about ten yrs ago I got passed by a jimmy up in Maine... I heard him before he pulled out to pass... and as he went by, there... on the side of the hood... "buzzin' dozen" it was a 12v92, Nothing sounds like that.
Has Anybody else noticed how this truck from A distance favors a moving van more than a big rig until it gets upon you? Neat how this truck fools you into thinking that its a Moving truck vs a big rig. Tiety You Gotta Keep That Beast Running Loud & Proud For As Long As Possible. Gotta Love The Pissed Off Grumbling Sound This Thing Makes As It Passes You. Only Thing Better Than Listening To & Watching This Video Would Be To See This Beast In Person.Excellent Job Gentlemen
if you were following it, you'd want to keep overtaking just so you could hear it go past you again and again. but that would probably irritate the driver. :-/
Folks weather yall realize it or not the 671(238) Along w/ a lot of other 2 stroke Detroit motors IS A DYING SOUND A sound i love ESP From a 238 Detroit as we had 2 GMC's a s/a 9500 tractor & a Tri axle Brigadier dump w/ a 238 this is a sound i miss hearing everyday (a part of the reason why im hard of hearing in my early 30's LOL )
It sounds like he has a 10 speed roadranger transmission in it....In the coming toward shot, he gets it up to 9th, and in the going away shot, he gets it into 10th...My favorite part of the video is when he grabs 9th gear just before the pickup truck passes him....the sound right there sounds like raw power.

After seventh gear that pickup didn't get too far. Great sound , you can hear it start from a mile away.

That punk in the Chevy P/U needs a sidewinder up his tailpipe for disrespecting that Detroit by passing him..

AussieAviationist 2 years ago
Do you have to use high idle all the time or just when warming up? I heard that you get the best fuel economy when cruising at the rpm where you get the most torque is that true with GMs as well?
024reredrum 2 years ago
Use the high idle when the vehicle is going to idle for a while, more than a few minutes. They do use slightly less fuel if you keep the revs down, but carbon deposits build up on the pistons so it's best to rev them out a bit. Plus they sound awesome with full jakes on in a built-up city!
AussieAviationist 2 years ago
@024reredrum Yes. 1,400rpm for 6-71N.

do you have to run them Detroit's wide open to get power out of them becuase it dont seem like them old screamers have much power but they sure are awesome to listen to!!!
crazyman7000 2 years ago
You have to beat them, because if you lug them like a four stroke diesel, you'll seize them up. The old school rule is slam your hand in the door and take it out on the motor!
earsneyes1 2 years ago
Well its a two stroke motor so all the power is in the top end not like the 4 strokes where all the torque is between 1200 and 2000 depending on the engine

What a nice sounding truck. They don't make 'em like that any more. I drove a GMC Astro COE in school that had a 318 in it with dual exhaust.

true, they are rather gutless as a tuned dodge pickup with the 5.9 in it can doubble the power of a 6-71 but nothing sounds like a detroit as my fav is the dirty dozen 12v71tt

AussieAviationist 2 years ago
...420 hp ...6V92...probably flies too, this particular truck has "advertised" 577 ft lbs torque (SAE Gross) @1200 RPM, 210 hp @2100....hardly a fair comparison...Jim.

I miss that old beast...
bigchevy80 2 years ago 2
I take it you're in Canada??? The reason I say this is because at the start of the video, I can see a speed limit sign with 80km/h on it!

i cant believe these are two stroke diesel's they sound amazing!
sb360ram 2 years ago 2
Bloody better than some 4 stroke engines, ie Cummins - but you do have to look after them a bit more! Running the correct lubricating oil is VERY important! They can gunk up with sludge, which is 90% carbon! They have to be de-coked regularly by hauling a heavy load for a few hours - this avoids the sludgig up of everything, which results in a very costly rebuild!
huppypuppy 2 years ago
Hell Yea!!! This is a freaking killer video right here!!! Sounds unbelieveable!!! reminds me of the movie Maxiumum Overdrive!! #1 movie! More videos please!
