  • Perhaps they should use the fastest computer processors for netbooks. Even up to 8GB or 12GB of RAM.

  • Do youself a favor and get an alienware m11x r3.

Its almost as small as this and about 5 times as powerful, has longer battery life, its not made out of plastic, has a much better keyboard, bigger monitor, more connectivity and it can handle current software and gaming.

  • It's not that great mainly because of Xp home if there was vista or 7 then it would be better because they have better system management tools along with an upgrade of 2 or more gigs of memory other then that every thing else jest fine I know because I have one

  • What's the music in the background?

  • @edovinus : Dillinger Escape Plan - 43% Burnt. You can find it on the album "Calculating Infinity" great song by the way.

  • @damdahu Thanks!

  • WOW 0.25 !... IT CAN WATCH VIDEOS OMG! most could no... dude thats sick a pc that can watch videos :D!

  • what is the name of that nerd? :))

  • my note book can do all that all i did was change the cpu

  • IT CAN ACTUALLY SEE VIDEOS!!! THAT'S LAME! WHY NOT GET A LAPTOP??? (RETHORICAL QUESTION!)

  • its got crappy windows on it!

  • INTEL core 2 trio? or triple core?maybe atom 2

  • "It can um... Actually stream videos!"

Yeah, my 1000H can do that too...

  • I've bet acer has 8 hour batery life

  • ups smoked to much and i confuzed the eepc with the webbook i apologise:D

  • my friend your not douing a review but people thing that way so look my opinion lie about this rubbish netbook and stupid people go to stores and buy it becouse they herd you thinking about thoes 9 houres.! couse is no way too keep that much he will touch 2 houres if you are using that computer for 2 houres continusly i had 20 pics and all of them was bad quality you could say the touch pad :-& when you want to close a window from touch he automaticly run in an aposite MADE IN CHINA

  • The N280 processor is almost identical to the N270; according to the reviews, the performance boost is less than 5%.

And to the other reviewers who don't think you'll get the full 9.5 hours of battery life, try disabling the USB controller, bluetooth, wired ethernet, and sound, as well as lowering the screen brightness, and you'll get OVER 9.5 hours. Even more with the wi-fi turned off. I don't use -any- of those things when I'm typing notes in class.

  • Can it play hd videos on youtube and downloaded movies?

  • no hd, especially in flash 420p is ok no 720 or 1080p

  • haha software built in?

  • WAHH the music is annoying....it makes me angry -.-

  • Mac sucks. If they did make netbooks they'd have the same specs but at around $950. Check and mate. ASUS computer tech rules. I'm gettin' this little gold mine this week except I'm getting the sleek blue finish. Good vid.

  • if you need more battery life...

    don't upgrade the ram!

    don't over clock!

normal usage w/ wi-fi on could last for around 8hrs... (must be full charge first!) but you can squeeze up to more than 9hrs if you work on energy saving mode w/ minimal operations.

  • since mac makes mini's.. oh whoops.. they dont. but if they did it would have the same specs at quadruple the price.. jack ass.

  • iv seen 11 hours on this thing lol

  • meh. 280 is marginally faster than 270. did you bother testing the battery yourself? real world, this battery will last about 6 hrs, which is only slightly better than the competition. Other than the above, above draft N wireless, this is no different than say MSI Wind.

  • Ive gotten over 8 hours, with wifi on...Shortest ive found has been 7ish hours.

  • "did u bother testing the battery yourself?" wow so much for irony..

  • I don't have one and I am not "reviewing" it. I can see the product and read its specs on the asus website.

  • then why are you stating that it will only last for 6 hrs in 'real life' if u have no strong evidence all the more that u dont have the system itself.. stop confusing people..

  • I'm not saying you are wrong, but, again, I am not doing a review; If i were doing review I would actually review it rather than citing specs. My "real world" 6hrs battery life is based upon discerning reviews from people who actually bothered to test the battery under "real world" conditions: wifi on, screen brightness not lowered, etc. Plus, we all know that batteries are at their prime when you FIRST buy but quickly loose some of their magic. 9.5 hours is complete BS. Confused still?

  • thats better

  • jesus me processer is a 1.60ghz errr

    2gb ram tho :D :P

  • Nice song in the background

  • i would like to know if i can play games like left for dead, counter strike, gta san andreas, because i

read that it was possible but i'm not sure.

where can i have a list of games i can play in this netbook?

  • Possible? Maybe. Good gameplay experience? Doubtful. These are not gaming machines. They're barebones systems built for maximum portability and battery life.

  • Yes of course you can run all the games you have listed. My asus 1000he even runs crysis which is a very demanding game :D I love asus!

  • $2000 vs. $389.........nuf said.

  • dude, i own a macbook pro. been there, done that......yugos can be fun from time to time. don't hate ;-)

  • Obviously, you aren't the target audience for these netbooks. They're for people like me, who need a powerful desktop system for normal work, but like the ability to work remotely at times. It is a somewhat stripped-down, very portable system that is suitable for lightweight tasks but can also interface with more powerful computers over a network. And it's cheap. The closest thing Apple has is the MacBook Air, and it starts at $1800.

  • Typical mac guy disdain for pc's. Jobs is an idiot for not making a macnetbook. I am sure if he did it would blow everything else out of the water but at probably double the price at least.

  • nothing compared to ion ^^

  • wow, Does anyone know, when is this model coming to Europe

  • I was going to buy hp mini 2140 ... but this is intel atom 280 lmao and you can overclock to 1.75ghZ with the preinstalled overclocking software.

  • Hahahahahahahahaha!!!

    no coments ;P

  • nice fucking idiot review-what did this guy do,just read asus's marketing material and base his review on that?

the newer processor is NOT faster. it's meant to save power, not be faster. which leads us to....

this netbook is not any faster than the previous models or netbooks, either up asus or any of their competitors with the same older cpu from intel.

the battery lasts for 8 hours with POWER SAVING ENABLED,not exactly "real life usage".

in short, reviewer is a fucking moron.

  • with POWER SAVING ENABLED, this netbook could last upto 9 hours!!! That's almost 3x longer than most of the other netbooks in the market! And that's pretty darn longer than your average laptop usage of 1-2 hrs per charge! The battery life is pretty much the selling point of this product and people are not minding the added 1lb weight if they don't have to keep plugged in to use it - which really defeats the purpose of being portable in the first place, laptops are not portable!

  • I read on a website (Engadget or Gizmodo, I think) where they managed to pull 10.5 hours out of this thing.

I'm selling my POS M1530 and it's 2 hour battery life to get this beauty... I wanted a portable device Dell, not a desktop that folds in half.

  • get some thermal tape for keyboard flex

  • The Atom 280 is 1.66 vs. 1.6, NOT 2.66 vs. 2.6

  • funny how he sais it makes a hell of a difference, given that the new processor runs at 2.66 ghz and the old one runs at 2.60 ghz... thats a less than 3 per cent faster! its a great laptop though, im going to buy it in about a month when i go to the states.

  • Also, he doesnt point out that the N280 still supports the old 945 chipset, not the new one, which is planned for a month's time (I think). I dont really know what that all means but I'm told that it means that it's still basically the same as the previous one in performance terms. Maybe someone can add some info here.

  • yeah my 900ha handles everything except for high def.

But the battery life if f-ing amazing.

And zip it with the retarded iphone banter. its the 10 year olds that like nothing more to do than yell at the top of their lungs, ala praise apple's iphone. Thats why i sold my 3g iphone last month... I was embarrased to be even remotely related to the retarded apple sheep....

    Baaa baaa baaaa.... SHEEP>

  • iphone 3g really sucks for web browsing

  • I found that this Netbook is actually good for 1) carrying around (laptops have been severely overrated on this regard since their inception; move from desk to desk, maybe, but not truly portable) and 2) if you want to spend less than $400.

  • I wondered what Santa Claus did on his time off. Thanks for the review!

  • you can stream normal quality youtube videos on like every other 1000 model eee pc.

  • I have a 1002HA which is its predecessor I think, it plays High-quality videos from YT very smooth, it plays HD 720 too , but lags a bit.

  • Do you need to overclock the processor at all?

  • No need to overclock, there is a mode Super.Perf.mode which gives a bit more power, but not that HUGE difference!

  • The super performance mode is essentially a small overclock. You can actually push it to be a little faster than in super performance mode but run the risk of frying your processor.

  • I know that, I overclocked other processors, never burned one :P, but I know the risk. Still it's a good processor, plays a lot of games, run almost every software, windows 7 runs pretty fine too =)

  • But awesome, I'm glad to hear it can handle streaming hd youtube.

  • high quality*

  • i love the new keyboard

  • yea me too

  • "Gary is misinformed. The Atom N280 (not Atom 280) isn't a "world of difference" over the N270. Nowhere near. And it handles video playback exactly the same. Streaming media? N270 plays it just fine. 1000HE comes with the same old 945GSE chipset, meaning it plays 720p HD content fine (just like the older models), but still no 1080p."

Exactly, this guy is spewing bull shit, you wont see a tremendous amount of performance increase from a 1000HA or other models with similar specs

  • Miss print on bus speed, it's 167 Mhz instead of 133

  • Another thing to remember is that these computers are not marketed to be a high end machine, they are marketed for low cost basic computing. They can't be compared to a regular laptop or desktop pc.

  • The things I have noticed is this thing has a 1.66 Ghz processor instead of the 1.6, another thing is the bus speed is 633 Mhz instead of 533 Mhz, it also has bluetooth and an improved Wi-Fi these will make a performance difference.

  • First of all, Gary is as obsolete as the 945GSE chipset. The 1000HE is a fine netbook for the price, but it hasn't much to add performance-wise compared to the other netbooks available.

  • Gary is misinformed. The Atom N280 (not Atom 280) isn't a "world of difference" over the N270. Nowhere near. And it handles video playback exactly the same. Streaming media? N270 plays it just fine. 1000HE comes with the same old 945GSE chipset, meaning it plays 720p HD content fine (just like the older models), but still no 1080p.

The keyboard and battery are the only major improvements here. Video and gaming performance won't be fixed until we see a half way decent chipset (nVidia ION).

  • subscribed.

  • i know its availiable for pre-order, but when do they ship it?

  • First shipment should arrive the week of the 15th, which means people who preordered early will get theirs by the 23rd.

  • Wow, it can actually stream videos. Is this 1997 or what??

  • when is it coming out?

  • its comes out Feb 18 2009 its in amazon ready for pre-order for $375

  • I have a Asus 701... its total junk... barely enough power to check your email.... pretty much useless

  • I have an older 701 4G, it works just fine. I have XP installed and it runs everything that my newer 900HA (N270, 945GSE, 8.9") does (photoshop cs3, office 2003, half-life). Added a touchscreen and made a few other small mods. The 900MHz Dothan is only about 3/4 the power of the Atom which is still powerful enough to run just about anything, and the SSD (if you have an older model) doesn't perform all that bad either. The only drawback was the 7" screen, which was the main reason why I upgraded.

  • This guy's full of crap. I got an acer aspire one and it has no difficulties at all to show videos full screen!

  • Agreed. People were excited over the 1000HE because ASUS originally claimed it would feature the new GN40 chipset which was supposed to be Intels response to the nVidia ION chipset (capable of playing back 1080p). But surprise, the 1000HE has the same old 945GSE chipset.

People will notice NO real-world video or gaming performance difference.

This guy is spewing hype and misinformation (don't get me wrong, the 1000HE is a great netbook, but not nearly as revolutionary as people hoped).

  • Acer sucks dick!

  • I want Gary Krakow's job.

  • Great!!!!!!

  • mine's pre-ordered. can't wait. :)

  • already got a netbook ... very happy with it

think ill wait till dualcore atoms ;)

  • Unfortunately, you're going to be waiting for a very long time.

Intel isn't going to put a dual-core version on netbooks. They are allowing manufacturers to put them in nettops instead.

  • The Atom N280 is slightly more potent than the N270; the new chip has a speed of 1.66GHz and a 667MHz frontside bus, compared with the latter's 1.6GHz and 533MHz bus.

Intel is also including new GN40 integrated graphics, compared with the N270's Intel 945GSE graphics.

  • It has the 945.

  • See Laptop Mags preview for proof.

  • Yeah. People have assumed this ASUS product will come with GN40 chipset because Intel has announced the Atom 280 will be complemented with the GN40 chipset as a new category netbook. They call it: "Enhanced Media Netbook".
