I came onto this video expecting nothing, thinking that Razorlight were just any other 'punk-pop' band, but I am pleasantly surprised. They have recorded a very respectful and similar cover, properly recreating the original sound. They even had their drummer sing it! He sounds quite like Ringo. A very good cover.
The Police’s Stewart Copeland: "Ringo is the leader in the education for all young drummers of style over flash, always playing the right things rather than a lot of things.”
Ringo "doesn't dazzle with flashy technique and pyrotechnics," says The Cars' lead guitarist, Elliot Easton. "What he does is so much more elusive and difficult: He plays songs on the drums. Anybody who has sat down behind a drum kit in the last 45 years owes him." (USA Today, Praising Ringo Starr, one drummer to another)
When I heard Razorlight were doing a cover of this, I cringed. But when I realised that arrogant Johnny Borrell wasn't taking part, I was elated! The drummer's quite a good singer as well - he does a good job here!
nice work ,with the 4 track,....makes me think about Ringo's voice ...wasn't so bad really and dare I say it Wet Wet Wet did do a really good cover with all the modern equipment of course
Ringo didn't have a great range like John or Pau, but he had the perfect voice for country/rockabilly music. Listen to his Beatles songs like Act Naturally or Honey Don't. Listen to his solo songs like Beaucoups of Blues, Love Don't Last Long, Waiting, Fastest Growing Heartache In The West + Woman Of The Night. He was the best country/rockabilly singer of the Fab 4.
Wht's tha story wit "tha 2 boyz" "over-seeing" lol in the Recording Studio lol??!! They don't look too happy! :-/
I think this is a fab cover of the song. They had a lot to live up to with the original band who sang it ... every-one in agreement bout that yeah?! And they did a pretty damn good version of it here if I may say so myself, so 11 outta 10 4 this 4 you Razorlight! :) Well Done! :D
"Paul wasn't particulary good on the bass" ? Sorry, joemclean, but I believe you don't have the knowledge to say that! In fact I think you have no idea of what is to play bass or either to listen to it. Paul was the best melodic bass player for years. John Lennon told this, and I don't think any of us can say the opposite.
You dont quite understand me. Im saying the beatles wernt amazing because of how well they could play thier instruments, they were amazing because of thier ideas, and how they worked together. For example, flea from RHCP is probably a more proficient bass player, BUT this doesnt mean i think he's better. Paul wasnt bad on the bass by any stretch of the imagination, but he wasnt incredible either. He did, however, write songs that worked perfectly with the group. I hope you get me :P
I know that's why they weren't amazing but that doesn't mean Paul wasn't good on bass, he was still brilliant on bass. As i said originally, the bass on this version doesn't even come close to being as good as paul's (imo anyway).
And no, Paul wasn't always the bassist while they were the Beatles. It was originally Stuart Sutcliffe while they were called the Beatles until mid 1962 when he died.
Looks like we'll have to agree to disagree. I think he wrote amazing things for the bass, but wasnt the best bass player ever. He isnt bad either. And obviously paul lied on the video then :P
Well I never once said he was the greatest ever, because I don't think he was, I just thought he was brilliant, certainly better than you were saying anyway :).
maybe i was a bit derogatory. Also, upon consulting a large beatles book above my head, youre right about the bass, i never knew they were a 5 piece in 62. You learn something new everyday. Was he the guy who went to art school with John?
joemaclean, I get you, I really do and also thank you for seeing no bitterness at all in my words, but I think that saying "Paul wasn't bad on bass" does not pay justice to the reality. I see there are a lot of subjective reasons to like or dislike a musician's playing, but there are also objective parameters -not technical necessarily- that tell us that a player is great, and Paul certainly was. Great imaginative lines, an unortodox (for the time) use of the harmonies...
comparing paul with flea? i mean thats comparing aples with pears. they both have diffrent styles and use diffrent instruments. and its not always about what you play but more about how you play it
You hit the nail on the head with that statement. They were singular and fabulous and irreplaceable. It was the collaboration and their progressive nature that made them the greatest.
Paul wasnt particularly good on the bass. He only went down to the bass when he screwed up a guitar solo, but the beatles being 'technically profficient' has nothing to do with it,the beatles are amazing because of the sound they made when they came together, not because any of them were amazing at thier instrument.
Just because he wasn't an aggressive player doesn't mean he wasn't good. Paul was an amazing bass player, just listen to him on with a little help or dear prudence, he is very melodic as polaroyd5 said.
And the reason he played bass was because the original bassist in the beatles died...
I'd refer you to my reply above. And a bassist from a previous lineup may have died, but as long as they were the beatles, paul was the bassist. I got the thing about him going down to bass because he screwed up from a beatles anthology documentary, where paul said it.
What I like about the Sgt. Pepper 40th anniversary albums is how I hate practically every band that covered the songs but how you can really tell that they put their heart into the covers and that the covers are all fantastic.. With the exception of "She's leaving home".
You are right , if you say that Greenday and U2 are great bands. But you cant say that the others are "shit" .. Thats the only shit.. or do you just know these two bands ??!
This is truly one of the greatest performances by one of the greatest and most talented bands that is ever likely to exist. They make me glad to be alive. They put mozart to shame. I love them.
Listen to this (or any of the tracks form this album) and then listen to the original - they all lack the tasty ear candy exquisiteness. Not dissing any of the bands, but...
the excuse was that becuase ringo sang this song for the beatles the razorlight drummer should sing it, but i think this was a cover up of the real fact... that johnny borrel is a fukin cunt and proberly just cudnt be arsed
That's the reason Andy sang it. The band decided to follow in the Beatles footsteps and have the drummer sing it. The whole segment used to be posted here awhile ago. Now all that you can find is the actual recording. The rehearsal and interview segment was almost 10 minutes long.
This is a brilliant cover, they aren't trying to be the Beatles, they are simply celebrating how great the album was in the first place, basically, they are just showing respect for the Beatles because they were fab!!!! And yes it is the drummer who is singing it, because they wanted to do it in the same way the Beatles did all those years ago.
I think they are trying to do the same thing as the 4 done back in the day, they got the drummer to do lead vocals on this track, I could be wrong =/.
@pjgalvin14 Ringo's drumming was a major contribution to The Beatles music yet he never gets recognition. His drumming in A Day In The Life is iconic. To quote Phil Collins, ""Starr is vastly underrated. The drum fills on the song "A Day in the Life" are very complex things. You could take a great drummer today and say, 'I want it like that.' He wouldn't know what to do."
To quote Steve Smith of Journey, "One of Ringo's great qualities was that he composed unique, stylistic drum parts for The Beatles songs. His parts are so signature to the songs that you can listen to a Ringo drum part without the rest of the music and still identify the song."
It is good but i always thought that the point of a cover was to take the song and make it your own...these guys do a bang up job but the best cover version of this song, in my opinion, is Joe Cocker's he slows the song down and makes it very soulful. But thats just one mans opinion.
I totally agree with kearnm, especially after the shiteness of Slipway Fires. Here they actually sound like a band rather than a vehicle for Johnny Borrell's ego. I used to like him, but the fact that most of their last album is just vocals and piano is rubbish. Big disappointment. But this is a great cover- one of the best in the Sgt Pepper BBC Sessions.
This is a very poor cover if you ask me. I've seen the documentary about contemporary rock artists recording SGT. Pepper songs. Bryan Adams was the best, Kaiser Chiefs were nowhere!
This is a nice version, but no one beats Joe Cocker's version. I love the Beatles, but Joe Cocker just brought this song up to a level that nobody can touch.
This reminds me of The Beatles when they were together they are the best band ever if Lennon was alive they would still be together for sure damned Mark David Chapman
Whats the point of insulting a band on the internet? you just look like a dick. Why not just watch stuff you do like and that way you live an easier life and no one gets hurt.
I'd just like to say that Razorlight are not cunts. Johnny is not a cunt, he is very talented but also a bit egotistic, so fucking what!. Andy Burrows sang that song well and is also a top drummer.

This reminds me of The Beatles when they were together they are the best band ever if Lennon was alive they would still be together for sure damned Mark David Chapman
Beatlemania2008 3 years ago
The Beatles weren't together anymore when John was shot.

maybe he means they'd get back together if he was alive.

i'm not a fan of razorlight but i must say, that they are one of the few bands that did a good beatles cover.
i was just listening to jonas brother's version of Hello Goodbye, and then i listen to this one, and i think i cant even compare them

Whats the point of insulting a band on the internet? you just look like a dick. Why not just watch stuff you do like and that way you live an easier life and no one gets hurt.
I've heard better but they're not bad.
but then again i am me

I'd just like to say that Razorlight are not cunts. Johnny is not a cunt, he is very talented but also a bit egotistic, so fucking what!. Andy Burrows sang that song well and is also a top drummer.
