Ammo storage up front? Ready ammo in a round carriage in the turret?
What does this sound awefully familiar to????
T-62....
And the T-62 got it's rear end handed to it by the israeli's over and over again during the Yom Kippur war... Yes, I know i'm comparing to a Russian tank.... But the fact is that these russian tanks had big problems with ammo storage up front and the germans did basically the same thing.... It just ain't a good idea lol....
Thank God this tank never saw combat! It has 70mm thick armor on hull front angled at 60 degrees (the same as T-34/85!), and behind it 42 rounds next to driver...
Our tanks are destroyed by IEDs almost exclusively when they're NOT in direct combat, and are just moving from point A to point B. So of course they're going to use the roads. But they don't NEED to use the roads any more than a Leopard 2 does. They both get around the same traction, the only difference is the Leopard 2 has speed, and speed isn't the same as traction. There's a difference.
In modern warfare, when it comes to armored warfare, tanks need protection by armor rather than speed.
The armour of the Leopard 1 is still too weak. And it's not that fast either. Even the 2A6 with all it's additional armour is faster in heavy terrain, because of it's better balance. Balance is essential if you want to move fast cross country. The LeoI has to slow down at every wave in the ground, otherwise it starts to jump, which is painful for the crew. The LeoII can swim over those bumps because of it's perfect balance.
Our tanks do leave the roads. And they don't get stuck. Look up pictures of armored rushes through the deserts in Desert Storm. However, because we can't easily just run over Mohamed's wheat field for no reason if we're not even in combat, we use the roads. This is actually why PROTECTION is greater than MOBILITY. A fast, light tank is going to take more damage from a mine than a heavy, protected tank.
Yes, but that "philosophy of protection" is flawed in modern tank warfare, where targetting and fire control systems are advanced enough to hit even the fastest vehicle. In WWII, speed won the war for the Soviets, as the T-34 could rush enemy posistions and be a pain to target. Modern FCS and ATGM guided munitions make speed as a defense less feasible. Even the Russians, famed for their "speed over armor", are realizing this and putting ATGM protection and more armor (ERA) on their tanks.
I worked with a couple of guys that were in the Canadian Army and both drove the Leo 1...or the C1 as Canada calls it. They both said its an awesome tank.
Now, we have the newer 2A6 series for our troops in Afgahnistan...good on them. I guess we are also getting the 2A4 series as well???
I drove a LeoI during my time in the german army. I loved it. Even though it is badly balanced compared to it's successor the LeoII it was kept in service untill 2004 because of it's reliability. It's armor is far too weak for modern times and the motor is not powerfull enough to carry more of it.
Still it was a lot of fun to drive it and we were proud to be the best tank drivers in the army, because driving the LeoII isn't really a challenge.

Leopard 1 governed to 65 km/h. Leopard 2 at 70 km/h
M1 Abrams can do 65 mph without governor on doesnt really matter

Leopard barely goes faster than other western tanks, it goes 3 km/h faster than Abrams for example lol that difference is negligible.
