Short 1-3 drive with PPG straight cut gears on my 2002 WRX

I don't mean to bash, but the more I see these the more I hate the whining noise.. did you just get used to it or does it bother you time to time?

@krnhaechan30 I mean I dunno I didn't really mind it. The 5th is stock so it's like stock on the interstate. You get used to it after a while and getting her to whine when slowing and going into first never gets old. lol

I also have an externally gated WG dumped atmosphere and an e-cutout so i'm not one that really cares for quiet. I have a quiet exhaust for road trips otherwise the cutout is open.

Get ur sensors checked ur engine light is on u have a minor fault

@johncenayoll Yea...the sound just comes from the straight cut gear itself instead of being helical cut. Put your car in reverse it's straight cut same thing. ;)

Well superchargers usually have straight cut timing gears, so thats where alot of the noise comes from. (They usually have one lobe belt driven, and the others fixed to that through gears)

@johncenayoll Yeah like the vid owner said it has to do with the tooth profiling. Since there is such a large contact area the gears make a whining sound. Since there is all that contact those gears are almost indestructible. It would take a tremendous amount of force to break them.

@johncenayoll ..there's straight-cut gears on the inside of a supercharger. I'm not real sure about what action really creates the sound though. Vibrating metal?

Hey man I was wondering is that the dog box or the syncro straight cuts? I am asking because I am going to upgrade my gears next on my 03 WRX and I haven't completely decided on what to go with. I think I am going to go with just a dog box but this is still my daily driver and I have heard that they can be a bitch to drive and shift so I am not sure. Let me know, thanks.

@rextuner03 Synchro man....especially for a DD. Dogrings by nature get worn even with regular driving. The boxes need to get rebuilt periodically. I will tell you from driving an MRT, PPG, and various other dogboxes they are a HUGE PAIN in the penis to drive. I would drive one first honestly. You can shift just as fast with a synchro box with the right setup anyway. I can tell almost no diff in time from my box and when i clutchless a dogbox. They're mainly made for positive engagement.

Did you pay attention to any fuel mileage changes with the new gears or was it about the same?

@needleonthevinyl Dude it was about the same, but honestly i'm getting better gas mileage now than it did back then. Bigger turbo = less in boost.

@ithollywood32 Umm it's a built gearbox......it's stronger with better ratios. I have about 300+ launches and countless flat foots from 350-450whp with no issues thus far.

You can get just the gears installed for around 4500 or so now. Mine was a bit more.

Who cares lol. Tuned in speed density it is going to keep coming back unless i tune back with the Crappy MAF based fueling.

SD and the rear o2 causing the issues. But, i am getting ported TGVs, Intake Mani, TB on Thursday i will get rid of all the CEL then via Romraider (engenuity)
