  • Hello! Does anybody know the meaning of:

"Og skal eg nord i trollebotten

Og løyse di dotter or vånde

Så vil eg hava ded Olafs-skipid

    Som dei kallar Ormin Lange"??

    Thanks! Heil! form Medellín (Colombia)

  • If I am going to go north into the Trollvalley/Trollfjord.

And free your daughter and sorrow.

Then I want that Olaf ship.

That they call Ormin lange(long snake)

    Roughly what it says.

    Great song and great cd.

  • Thank you!

  • And shall i north i Trollebottend and release your daughter from evil, then i will have the Olavs Ship, that they call Ormen Lange". It's not Ormin Lange... but Ormen.. guess someone didnt know how to write it. It's in norwegian mythology :) And yes im Norwegian, yet im not sure if my translation is correct. This is a fairly old dialect which aint used anymore :) And i can guarantee my translation is better than Castroman's translation...

  • Ormurin langi er det gamle navnet på båten. I moderne norsk har mange av "i"ene blitt til "e"...

  • Ormen Lange = the great serpent

  • Horrible translation from castroman here.. sheezh. It is:

And if I were to go up north to where the troll reside, and free your daughter from evil, I need the ship, which they call "Ormin Lange".

Its basically about how "Åsmund Fregdegjæver" says that he needs the biggest and best ship that the King has to offer him, so he may free the kings daughter.

In addition, this ship exists on museum display in Norway today, and is one of only two vikingships still in one piece :)

  • thanks, if it's not to much i'd like to ask if you could translate the rest as well. ohh..and thanks a lot for the added info - really interesting :)

  • @labanp Hey man, yea sure! I`ll do it :-)

I just finished translating a crazy difficult Àsmegin lyrical part for another dude, but I`ll have it translated for you maybe like monday. Its always fun to translate these northern lyrical pieces!

  • thanks, i'd also like to see that other Àsmegin translation. wish i could do it all myself, but...at least i'm learning :)

  • You're wrong, Ormen Lange has not been found, if it had, it'd be a sensation. The ship dwarfed all other ships in the viking age by far, we're talking ladders upwards to even board the ship. The ones ur thinking about is either the Gokstad or the Oseberg-ship.

  • No, youre wrong. The ship you are talking about is a mere myth, hardly a saga. In the case of lumsk its what we today call osebergskipet, dont forget that it got that name because of where it was found. What the vikings themselves called this ship is a whole other deal. Its named oseberg by us, ormin lange is a mere vague myth.

  • Niggasjit to get the facts on the table.

Ormen Lange was a 74 Alen long ship. ( 47 meters) Atleast according to the saga.

"Skipet det bygdes i noregs land utav di beste emne. 70 Alen og 4 tel va kjølen i mellom stemnå"

Neither Oseberg nor Gokstad is that long. Gokstad wich is the biggest ship found measures 24 meters, and is only a 16 cesse ship. And ormen would be a aproximatly 32 or 34 cesse ship.

  • @niggasjit Your translation is better but atill not 1005.. i think between you it is right.. the lyrics do state that Åsmund does need Olav's ship.. the king is mentioned by name.. and i believe ded is the old word for død which gives me the impression that the kind is dead by the time this story happens.. I personally think the bands old norsk is a little bad also.. the ship in old norsk is called Orm Hinn Langi and not Ormn Lange..

  • @niggasjit Ormin Lange isn't in the Oslo vikingship museun.. those ships are the Oseberg (which was a queens ship, some believe Queen Åsa), Gokstad (believed to be king Harald Fairhair's ship) and Tune ships..

  • @azrael666ethereal The Oseberg is named by us (modern people) from where it was found. In the time of the vikings, the ship which is named by us "Oseberg", were most likely named "Orm Hinn Langi" as a nickname if you may.

Thats why I say, the closest you get to this ship today for real is the one in museum, the "queen ship".

Its just that "Ormen Lange" also got a saga and myth attatched to it, as it in addition most likely was a real ship. From queen Åse or Kind Harald Haarfagre

  • @niggasjit I totally agree with you and i hope it is that ship, but i havn't read anywhere that this is indeed the ship that was called Orm Hinn Langi.. if it was that ship surely they would have given the ship on display that name and not where it was found?? Orm Hinn Langi is very famous, makes no sense to me.. I have seen the ships in the museum and recommend to anyone who is into Viking history to go there..

Hey i hope I didn't come across agressive, that wasn't my intentention.. :)

  • @azrael666ethereal Hehe no not at all, I hope I dont come off as aggressive either :)

Uhm well you know historians and archeologists.. they want to be 150% sure before they do anything. And in addition, it is some time since they dug up these ships, so the initial name of Osebergskipet etc. has kinda "stuck".

Alltho many historians are starting to look for what the ships were really called back in the day of the vikings :)

  • @niggasjit

No, its not, unfortuneately. Ormin Lange hasn't bee found. The two (complete) ships on display are the Oseberg ship and the Gokstad ship

  • @niggasjit Olavs skip var aldri funna. Dei Gokstad og Oseberg skipa er på Bygdøy, ikkje Ormin Lange.

  • @danielyepesl

It is old norwegian, so some of the words I dont get, but from what I can tell:

"And should I go north to Trollebotten,

To release your daughter from [....]

    Then I want Olaf's ship

That they call Ormin Lange (the Great Serpent)"

    Hope that helps.

  • @NSblackmetal I guess "vånde" is the same as the swedish word "vånda" with means grief, despair etc.

  • @danielyepesl

    correkt translate

And I'm going north of the troll bot

And solving your daughter or anguish

So I will Hava ded Olaf-ship

As they call Ormin Lange (ormin lange is a name that is translated to long snake ore dragon)

  • @TheSerenede Judging by how some of that isn't even English, I'm guessing you took it from a translation site and tried to fake some intelligence.

    Sadly you failed

  • @stupidvampiretwat no not att all for som of thos words arnt able to translate to english, so stop being an as and speak ahead of yourself

  • @TheSerenede Basically he says: If I am to go to Trollebotten in the north( where the trolls live) and save your daughter or perish, then I shall have Olaf's ship, which is called Ormin Lange.

  • @TheSerenede More an issue of you not really knowing a lot of English, then...?

  • @danielyepesl "And Shal I north in Trollebotten

    And take your daughter ?????

Then I will claim thy Olafs-Ship

    Called Ormin Lange!

  • lol its like age of empires...good no doubt

  • It must be sampled from that game..

  • Great song nothing else to say but freaking great song

  • I prefere the Demo version myself but the song is great!!!! 5 stars!!!

  • Heia Norge for at noen ivertfall holder vikingene i live og ikke glemmer vår stolte arv

  • Oh my god, 1:20. *_________*

  • i love that part.. one of the best parts of music i know..

  • why is the song so short? i always find this version? does anyone have a longer version?

  • omg the guitar is AWESOME. deep like the ocean. omg i luv that

  • Interesting harmonizing patterns.

  • mørkhet and vikings :)) \:D/ \m/ really great song!
