Whenever I had rats a long time ago when I let them loose they'd chew my rug! Why don't yours do that? How do you stop them from doing that?

@horselover8408 My rats are kept in their rat room, it's a confined area and completely rat proof. Whatever is in there, they are allowed to chew. But if I let them go in the rest of the home, yep, they would chew rugs and furniture and such. In their rat room...I don't care if they chew.

@RatsPal I use it to keep the rats in the room. I cut it into sheets of 2' x 8' and attach them together using zipties. It has worked very well for the last 6 years. This more recent group of rats, I need to use taller coroplast since I have quite the jumpers.

How much does the food cost for that many rats a week?

It's had for me to calculate that because I buy in bulk. I would say blocks are about $5 and fresh veggies a week is about $10.

I take the doors off the cage when it's their out time.

I don't use bedding but I do have litter trays with Yesterday's News... it's great for odor control.

I'm not sure which is better a ferret or a rat, they are both very cool animals.

yea im trying to put my rat on a diet and for treats i used to give my old rat dog treats but now i give my rat i have right now bananas do you know what other diet food i should give him

Dog food is not a good diet for rats. The best is rat block and only healthy treats. ;)

Hey Jorats i was wondering about some food in rats diets. I've seen lots of ppl use dog food pellets is that ok for rats or harmful and what type of cheerios do you use because i have honey nut cheerios but i dont know if the regular whole grain ones are better for the rats.

I prefer the multigrain cheerio. It's lower in sugar and fat.

Dog food is not a good diet for rats. But there are rat kibble, rat blocks that are formulated for rats that is the best. Oxbow Regal rat is one of them.

I've been enjoying your numerous ratties videos and I have just one question: do you have 2 different cages/playpens for males and females or do you get them neutered/spayed?

All my females are spayed and some of my males are neutered.

Each vet charges differently. In my neck of the woods, it's $240 for spays and $180 for neuters.

Wow. I thought it was expensive here. I was told a neuter costs $130.00, of course maybe that didn't incluse home going meds. I only inquired because we have one male that bites hard  and neutering may help, but we can't afford it. Out other male is only 10 months old and has had two large tumors removed at $150. each time.

The problem with rats is that they are susceptible to respiratory infections so yes, they can get quite costly with vet care.

if your going to have more than one rat you need to buy them together when they are really young and they wont fight

i use fleece in my cage too...just keep two sets....wash one set, air dry, put in the other set...

you have to replace them semi often but it still stays cheaper and cleaner than litter. =)

haha my rat was chewing on a pez wrapper and i threw it away and felt bad so i let her chew on an artificial rock and she broke it in half and it has bite marks everywhere but i just wonder.. its been 2 years and shes not chewing on her wood blocks can anyone explain why?

Rats don't need to chew on anything to keep their teeth trimmed but there could be other reasons, check her teeth to make sure everything is ok.

Rats have very poor lungs and are susceptible to pneumonia. I would recommend you start a vet fund so you are well prepared for when it happens.

rats are prone to respiratory infectionss often. if it sounds like they are sneezing really hard or constantly, go see a vet. sometimes it looks like there is blood coming from your rats nose or eye.. well it's actually mucus. it should be normal for a few days. if this keeps happening go see a vet.

I love your setup! I'm on my way to getting something like that. our babies are 7 weeks old now, we have 5 boys, 6 girls and the mommy. My darling Bender (their daddy) passed away before the babies were born. We are going to make a new cage for the girls and fix the other 2 for the boys. Sadly, we cannot let them roam around because we have 2 cats that were wild and they would hurt them, I'm sure.

It was one of those balls for playing a sport, I can't remember which one. But it's a flexible ball, a soft plastic.
