I remember going to the drive in with my family and friends in the mid 60s.Even as cheap as it was,we always snuck a few of us kids through in the trunk.Someone else mentioned the fact that the kids wore P.J.s which I forgot about. There was always two movies and cartoons etc and the show would run late so we had blankets and pillows all ready to go.All that entertainment for a few bucks.Great memories.
@fredstmoritz I have driven by the Garden Drive-In in Hunlock Creek while they were showing a movie! The Moon(Port) Drive-In is still open on US rte 220 west of Williamsport!
The drive in theater experience is enhanced by the showing of these classic intermission clips. I recently attended a showing at the Lakeland, FL SILVER MOON. They even showed classic clips before the movioe began! Thanks for posting , always fun to watch. Persnally, I'd rather miss a part of the movie than one of these gems.
Damn, those were the Days. I never thought that i would be using them. But here i am. In this Modern Day Hustle and Bustle, it sure would be nice to take the Family out on a Gorgeous Bug Ridden,Steaming Summer Night to the Drive-In. Fifty Cents or a $1.50 a Car Load. For those that still have em ? God Bless Ya !
Daw Butler did the voice of the cartoon scientist. I wonder what happened to that young genius Kurt Golden. How much longer before smoking in cars gets banned???
The Drive-In I used to go to when on vacation had an intermission ad just like the first film here, same announcer, obviously the same source, only the refreshments were on a "mountain" instead of a "machine", any chance of finding that? It would bring back memories.
Ahhh.. the drive in (we had one in Webster, NY-STARLIGHT). Does anyone remember that short film from the 1960's of a family going through a car wash in a convertable? STARLIGHT closed in maybe 1979 to make room for the crappy LOWES mutiplex in 1982. TDTESS- a classic, perhaps one of the best SF 1950's movies, the music itself was terrific. Please ignore the remake w/ the soulless K. Reeves.
when i worked at a drive in, in the 1970s, we ran "night of the leepus" one night and this colored boy i worked with thought those leepuses were going to jump off the screen!--lol--
I miss the way popcorn used to taste. It tastes like cardboard now at the movie theaters. I'm not even fond of microwave popcorn. Popcorn started to taste bad about 1990.
i went to a drive in da other day it was so cool i would go there every night if i could but itz 2 hours away. they even showed all of these intermission commercials.
Two of my favorite sci-fi comedies from those days both have improbable names, "Zotz" with Tom Poston & "The Twonky" with Hans Conreid. Both worth seeing.
ZotZ is a candy with a fizzy, sour center. At first, it looks and tastes like a regular hard candy. But if it is bit into or a hole is opened, sour fizz comes out. Zotz flavors include apple, cherry, watermelon, lemon, grape, and orange. This was a candy that was eaten in the 60's. While not available at most candy stores, it is often available online.
The good old Capitol Music Library, hard at service;Phil Green's Comedy Walker, much used in Hanna-Barbera's :Quick Draw", and in Don Fedderson;s "My 3 sons'< to name a few, plays in the elf scne. Real cool...as a stock music buff, and 60s kid..I might even VAGBUELY recall these..we started goin'; more to theatres by later 60s..
OMG Thanks for posting. I just turned 51 and I remember all of this. Going to the drive-ins(we had 5 within a 10 mile radius) with my dad will always be my fondest memories. Those hotdogs and burgers the the foil lined bags and the crinkle-cut fries in the square cardboard cups with the wooden two-pronged forks ... ahhhhhhh! Bliss! It sucks that this is gone forever.
Thanks for the comment, but I wouldn't even classify that Americana lifestyle we had experienced as "trash." The VCR destroyed the Drive-in. Of course, the "trash" exists now (well, starting in the late 80's anyway)and I see no treasure in that, even in the future. There's no longer simple and innocent pleasures.
Sorry if I was unclear. I didn't mean to imply that this is trash, only that it was considered "throw away" culture at the time and as such was not saved or treasured until much later. Kind of like Johnny Carson's early "Tonight Show" episodes, which were thrown away by NBC because they saw no value in keeping them.
wow....i wish drive ins were popular today....seemed like they were not only movies but a night of entertainment.....yummmm.... ice cream and hot doggies :) :) LOL....thanks so much :) :)
We go to our local drive in at least every two weeks and with 2 movies. I talked with the owner last night and this may be the last season for our drive in. Will sure miss this summer time fun. Kids will also. Owners want to retire.
Yeah it's a sad state of affairs when the kids in this day and time and in the future won't be able to find the fun in loading up in the car and going to the drive in with the family...back in the day we even took the dog...lol But i really miss the old drive ins...but i guess it's a different day and time though.
That Moon Rocket Kit, though, kinda cracked me up. Rather than a moon landing, it was a bit more reminiscent of the Challenger & Columbia Space Shuttle disasters. (OK, OK, I know I shouldn't laugh... Sorry!)
I loved every minute of this nostalgic into the movies past. I was a kid back then. That Cheerios moon rocket kit is such a crack-up today thinking how sophisticated toys are today.
Heh, out local drive had this intermission intro, but I guess it broke, so we only got the "INTERMISSION" card, WITH SOUND. So whenever intermission started, you'd see that card and hear "MMMMMmmmmneumnumnumnuh!" That "5 minutes to go" clip looks familiar, too.
With all of these 50s and 60s Intermissions shorts, they sure used cool music for them.
