She got the score she deserved. Compulsories were first and foremost about perfect execution of dance and tubling, linked to choreography and keeping in the time and feeling of the music. If you watch the section from 1:05 to 1:20 and watch her leg postion in passe, her hand details and timing to the music you will see that while she lacks an elegant line she is quite remarkable in her form and does posess musicality.
I think we are all forgetting that neither Zmeskal or Bogi were the best at this floor routine that day. But reigning world champions get the benefit of the doubt. Look at Grudneva, Miller, Lyssenko, Onodi and you will see the four best, in my own humble opinion of course. :) Happy Thanksgiving to all!
@hjaidar not really much...?? Shannon had a 10x better routine and THIS was fantastic, shannon had better form, better interepetation, extension, HEIGHT, and this height was superb as well but srly, r u going to even try to say that this was better than shannons u wont win
@peepers2221 Its obvious that Zmeskal had a better execution (Miller's issues on first and last passes, of course you must have an educated eye or not to be a die hard Miller fan) and much better interpretation than Miller (Do you know to dance? or most important Do you have any dance education?)
Zmeskal even had a better routine compulsorie than Bogi and Bontas, but all these gymnasts (MIller too) has better bodyline than Zmeskal wich by itself doesnt mean better dance or interpretation.
I have watched all the floor routines from every athlete and Zmeskal was by far the best on compulsory floor. Watch the way she open's, the way she tumbles (no one can beat her in the tumbling department) the way she dances! She far exceeds any solviet on this routine. She accented the music gorgeously and she didn't miss a beat. A perfect 10!!
I beg to differ, look at the technical mastery by Lyssenko on her opening pass of the compulsory routine. Shear power, Zmeskal is unmatched, height is comparable. I think Lyssenko sent her pass higher, maybe it's because she looks longer.
Maybe someone can clear this up for me - I can understand that she doesn't have the tall-ish lines of Boginskaya, but Kim accented the music perfectly with her dance...to me, Boginskaya looked flat-out bored in her comp routine. And clearly, the tumbling in this routine far exceeded Bogie's. Not sure I understand the score discrepancy.
The problem isn't her interpretation, while quite distracting is somewhat commendable (she is trying too hard to accentuate things that don't need it, she can take lessons from the Soviets on compulsory Floor). The problem is her poor non-active flexibility, the loss of foot form in some areas of hte routine, and the loss on control on some of the elements (the walkover at the end, for example). She also had a body type that worked against her in compulsories. Trying too hard to be artistic.
In other words, although she is obviously making an effort to show expression she isn't really "feeling" the expression - it's been programmed into her?
I think she did well with the body type she had, and the lack of natural balletic expression she had. But yes, others looked smoother (Grudneva, Onodi, Galieva, Hadarean, Miller)...
this is a brilliant performance. perfection. it is very special in the sense that it illustrates kim's artistry. she dances so beautifully and like a ballet dancer. everything is so on point with the music. we were so used to her powerful athleticism, and many criticized her for not being artistic like the european gymnasts, but this performance clearly illustrates her abilities in that aspect. BEAUTIFUL!
I'll always remember these Games and Zmeskal's gymnastics at them.
I also LOVE her in this - her movements WITH the correct musical notes are so clear. It is like she understands the choreographer's vision of the dance and tumbling all mixed together.
I just wish she, or any of the girls, would smile. The music is so joyous and bold.
I think She only scored a 9.9, which was waaay too low. Boguinskaya scored a 9.975, and Kim's routine was waay better. I saw both routines and compared them. The judges always overscored the Soviet's routines.
Bogi always looked a little forced in this particular round of compulsories. She did not do as well with this routine perhaps because it was choreographed by the Romanians and they tended to be more robotic. Still, Bogi's flexibility was just awesome and she always looks like she owns the floor even when she's not 100% on.
If you look at the dismount, I think the front walkout after the piked arabian was supposed to show a change of tempo. Kim quite rushes into hers. Look at Bogi's ... she slowed right down during it.
I agree. Certainly should have scored higher than Boguinskaya's 9.975. Bogi did well, but she didn't kick out the last pass like Kim. Absolutely gorgeous.
This was by far the best compulsory FX of the meet.

I liked Kim's comp routine but I think Miller's was much better. Better interpretation of the dance.

My primary contention is that she mastered the routine much better than Bognskaya who received a ridiculous score.

Shannon Miller didn't better than Zmeskal
Kim has more amplitude, better interpretation and dancing, also her first tumbling pass had better landing.

Zmeskal should have received a 10 for this routine. Beautiful and spectacular in every way.

I think that's more of a case of Bogi not having the stamina and Kim having a little too much power out of the Arabian.
