lol i remember my dad showing me this in how cheesy it was i was dying on the floor laughing for days then he was actually impressed with the lord of the rings movies in the 2000's and he is a harsh critic of movies
I own this version, sadly... I was so freakin angry that it wasn't the Rankin/Bass version that I grew up with when I cued it up on the DVD player for the first time. I was so excited to hear "Where There's a Whip, There's a Way" I was tricked by Wal mart again, but no more!!!!!! I NEED the REAL animated version.
@crazysingingchick you're nuts!! the Bass-Rankin version RUINED Tolkiens vision...thank god he never lived to see it...he would have been wroth.....this version may not have been perfect....but it was damn good considering the Bass-Rankin travesties.....
@Zatoichi444 My name IS crazysingingchick, lol... I agree that the Rankin/Bass didn't do Tolkien justice, but since I grew up with their versions, I have a soft spot in my heart for them, since they remind me of a happier and simpler time! Besides, if you were expecting a certain version, and the DVD you picked up had a cover made to look like the version you were after would you not be pissed to find an imposter? I would still like to see the version I wound up with - looks rotoscoped - cool!
Ah, the old Ralph Bakshi rotoscoped cartoons. They had actor play out the parts, then do animation over them. He also did a rather epic film called Fire and Ice (you can find it here on YouTube) that was about the same style. Only with half naked princesses and muscle bound heroes.
@cabalia454 It was rotoscoped, which means that the animator traced the animation over live action, frame by frame. You better believe the animation in this is amazing! :))
I have this on DVD, because I bought it once and thought it woudl be interesting.
It's soooo bad. I mean, considering what they had to work with it's commendable that they managed to do what they did. But really, it looks horrible in so many places. A LOT of the animation was cheap rotoscoping, or shadows behind curtains, among other things.
And they leave out so much of the first two books - it's like an hour and a half long, and it's supposed to cover Fellowship AND the Two Towers. :/
@Goatmon Well, to each his own, I guess. I can see your point, but personally, there is something really cool about rotoscoping that reminds me of stop-motion animation, and it gives such an eerie, surrealist quality to a cartoon. I still haven't watched my copy yet. I want to now, just to critique it better. As for leaving stuff out - that is pretty crappy. :(
This is the Lord of the Rings rilm, it might not be the PJ version but it doesn't detract from its qualities as a film in its own right.
Personally if you look at the CGI involved in combining the cartoon element with the real actor element and then consider it was made in 1980 it's an amazing achievement. It's just a shame they ran out of funding for the second half. (Though there is a sequel its no where near as good, but there is more singing).
Sorry but I grew up watching this cartoon every christmas way before the film came out and I actually prefer it in some ways. It's way darker and imho the orcs and dark riders are creepier in it. You should watch them marching to Isnengaard, if that doesn't send a shiver down your spine I don't know what will.
Oh I wish in the life version of LOTR They had put Tom Bobdabil Somewhere in there. As you can see I liked the character very much. He was the light and happy side of LOTR although it was very brief. lol
Interesting thing about Tom Bombadil is that he doesn't have much of an origin...which has made some wonder if he isn't an incarnation of Iluvatar himself...which would explain why the ring makes him laugh. There are other theories of course which are fun to think of. Part of the legacy that Tolkien left behind.
What I will say in positive review of the movie is that it actually stuck to the book REALLY well, with minor variations... but that's as far as the good goes.
Possibly the worst and least entertaining form of LOTR I've ever seen, and that's considering video games, movies, books, AND comics. (Yes there's a comic).
I think this movie is okay, the technique used are awesome and it doesn't need disney-quality to be good. But I don't really like Sam's character portrayal , I never got the impression he was like THIS in the books >_> (and I know Peter Jackson & Sean Astin's Sam aren't exactly like the books either but hey, they made him respectable!)
I MEANT it was the best technology available - Yes - Disney is the winner historically. If anyone else were to attempt to take on LOTR in 1978 they would have probably chose animation. There was no 3D back then- TRON was the first "computer animated" feature, but that's nothing to write home about. Man, you kids need to learn to lighten up a little - It's just a film, but lacking or not, it was a lot of work. Analog is not afforded luxuries like interpolation. Hand painted/12 per second.
I saw this in the theatre in 1978 or so, and sorry boys, but it was the best that technology had to offer back then, and it was quite inspiring and LONG for an animated feature. It is the work of Ralph Bakshi. He was a pioneer of rotoscoping. This is way before 3D animation mind you,and this film was responsible for casting many a youth into the world of D&D - with dice and pads of paper-those are ancient tools of the trade now. I still have all of my hand-painted lead figures. They are tiny!
Actually, within the way Sam is acting and the way the hobbits are dancing down the road, this follows the book probably more than the newest movie's do.
So.... Do you people honestly think that Lord Of The Rings started out as a live action movie?
.....seriously?
Do you people even consider for one second that the three Lord Of The Rings novels by Tolkien date back to 1954, and are completely different than the live-action movies which were made nearly 50 years later?!
The movies are not the first thing to come along. Not by a LONG shot. Wow.
@NuculurSplosion Is Return of the King the one I was thinking of when I bought this? By Rankin and Bass? With the song, "Where There's A Whip, There's A Way"? I get so mixed up with these - especially since they don't especially follow the books well. Anyway, It's been YEARS since I watched that one, and I refer to all of the animated versions as the Hobbit or LOTR! LOL
I can tell this was posted by someone spoiled by Lucasfilms and digital effects. So quick to dismiss the artistic efforts of Rings fans in an earlier age. And I question whether you have read the books. I rather doubt you have, or you would have known that Samwise was accurately portrayed in this wonderful film. I loved this film as a kid and for your mocekry of it I wish all the arrows of the Red Hand band to rest in your bosom.
@sagebrushpatriot Yeah, It's been a long time since I read them but I always thought Samwise was supposed to be more simple-minded and sweet (which I thought was still apparent in the newer, live action films as well). I still like the Rankin/Bass efforts, even if they aren't as accurate. They made me want to read the trilogy! They probably watered things down so that children could watch without being "too" scared. :)
the peter jackson films are based heavilly on this early spanish version ( look at the part where the 4 hobbits hide from the wraith under a tree and you'll see what i mean). without this, the jACKSON FILMS WOULD HAVE BEEN CRAP.

RAining HARD, your front yard is a beach, your backyard a forest of wonder...I'd explore both of them with my best friend, Izeah, my dog.

Ive got this on DVD, and its worth a look. Very wierd version, but its got some really cool animation/ live action mix. I bought this out of curiosity for like 5 bucks, but im glad its in my collection.

I beg to differ Sean Austin was equally retarded in the Goonies and there was definatly some gay hobbit fisting going on between Sam and Frodo.

This is a classic. and 30 years old Bakshi cartoon. Those who find it gay or weird are just ignorant :) sorry sad but true :)

Ive got this on DVD, and its worth a look. Very wierd version, but its got some really cool animation/ live action mix. I bought this out of curiosity for like 5 bucks, but im glad its in my collection.

Haha, I saw this film, it's not very good. Legolas' voice actor also plays C3PO in the Star Wars films which I found hilarious..
