  • shouldn't sam be taller than frodo?

  • Derp

  • Oh hi, Pops.

  • Oooooh, my god, Sam. Sam. What is wrong with you.

  • I think they stopped because they realized that Sam wasn't cool enough to take out the giant spider.

  • Why would you ever spend time making a video like this? I want my 36 seconds of life back.

  • what are you talking about... this is exactly like the film

  • NarmXD

  • I think I just died a little inside.

  • lol i remember my dad showing me this in how cheesy it was i was dying on the floor laughing for days then he was actually impressed with the lord of the rings movies in the 2000's and he is a harsh critic of movies

  • You murdered a chunk of my soul.

  • lalalalalala

  • Oh MY Oh HORRAY

  • samwise is a gay potato

  • Gay pride parades are among the common parade of a hobbit.

  • This cartoon was so awesome!

  • Did you read the book? T_T

  • I love how condescending Frodo looks when he's shaking his head. "Oh Sam, you lovable little idiot."

  • @Zardul XDD this made me laugh so hard...

  • better than the new movies

  • @pearldan in some respects i agree with you

  • @pearldan fuck no it isnt

  • Even hobbits should be allowed to have a gay pride parade.

  • @weiseWoelfin5 cartoon was made way before the movie

  • hahahahahahaha

  • "Oh, hooray!"

  • I own this version, sadly... I was so freakin angry that it wasn't the Rankin/Bass version that I grew up with when I cued it up on the DVD player for the first time. I was so excited to hear "Where There's a Whip, There's a Way" I was tricked by Wal mart again, but no more!!!!!! I NEED the REAL animated version.

  • @crazysingingchick you're nuts!! the Bass-Rankin version RUINED Tolkiens vision...thank god he never lived to see it...he would have been wroth.....this version may not have been perfect....but it was damn good considering the Bass-Rankin travesties.....

  • @Zatoichi444 My name IS crazysingingchick, lol... I agree that the Rankin/Bass didn't do Tolkien justice, but since I grew up with their versions, I have a soft spot in my heart for them, since they remind me of a happier and simpler time! Besides, if you were expecting a certain version, and the DVD you picked up had a cover made to look like the version you were after would you not be pissed to find an imposter? I would still like to see the version I wound up with - looks rotoscoped - cool!

  • WTF? What cartoon is this!?!?!? :O

  • @NRIX9

Lord of the rings, the animated version, the movie that never should have been

  • They are not gay hobbits, they are just hobbits BEING gay.

  • 0:14 - 0:17 Frodo's like: "You're such a retard!" smiling while shaking his head. XDD

  • i can't even imagine THIS sam making kids with rose xD

  • ...nightmares.

  • LMFAO So true!!

  • AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA BEST. VIDEO. EVER!

  • haahahah!!!!

  • what the heck was that ':(

  • Geeeez I can't wait for them to finish filming "the Hobbit" movie!! It's gonna be the best..Guillermo & Peter Jackson = Awesome

  • Samwise Gamgee (retard)... I need to pee...

  • Oh God, Sam what did they do to you? :(

  • @Headbanger142 i'm not sure what they did but they fucked up royal

  • you both are retarded

  • Ah, the old Ralph Bakshi rotoscoped cartoons. They had actor play out the parts, then do animation over them. He also did a rather epic film called Fire and Ice (you can find it here on YouTube) that was about the same style. Only with half naked princesses and muscle bound heroes.

  • LOL...thanks for sharing, made me laugh. :)

  • LOL samwise the retard

    this get's 5/5

  • as weird as this may be, i'm still absolutely blown away by how good the animation looks considering when it was made.

  • @cabalia454; yeh, except when it got all dark. That sucked.

  • @cabalia454 It was rotoscoped, which means that the animator traced the animation over live action, frame by frame. You better believe the animation in this is amazing! :))

  • OOH HOORAY!!

  • Omg I watched this when I was a kid. It explains a lot! lol. Oh man, I'm so glad I repressed this.

  • I have this on DVD, because I bought it once and thought it woudl be interesting.

It's soooo bad. I mean, considering what they had to work with it's commendable that they managed to do what they did. But really, it looks horrible in so many places. A LOT of the animation was cheap rotoscoping, or shadows behind curtains, among other things.

And they leave out so much of the first two books - it's like an hour and a half long, and it's supposed to cover Fellowship AND the Two Towers. :/

  • @Goatmon Well, to each his own, I guess. I can see your point, but personally, there is something really cool about rotoscoping that reminds me of stop-motion animation, and it gives such an eerie, surrealist quality to a cartoon. I still haven't watched my copy yet. I want to now, just to critique it better. As for leaving stuff out - that is pretty crappy. :(

  • I'm sorry but this is a classic!

  • This is the Lord of the Rings rilm, it might not be the PJ version but it doesn't detract from its qualities as a film in its own right.

Personally if you look at the CGI involved in combining the cartoon element with the real actor element and then consider it was made in 1980 it's an amazing achievement. It's just a shame they ran out of funding for the second half. (Though there is a sequel its no where near as good, but there is more singing).

  • "Shaddup!"

  • OOOEEE MYYY

    OOEEEE

    HOORAAAYYY!!!!!

  • What did they do to you, Sam? :(

  • @Joucelin Lobotomy?? ;)

  • Oh my!!! Oh hooray!!!

I actually like the film and even I find Sam to be ridiculously funny and closeted.

  • i'm guessing the guys who made this read like the first chapter of lord of the rings said aww strew it did some drugs and made this weird cartoon

  • LOL he actually does look retarded

  • "Gay hobbits" that's in the newer movies too.

  • I actually have the DVD of this and I really enjoy it!

  • me too!

  • Sorry but I grew up watching this cartoon every christmas way before the film came out and I actually prefer it in some ways. It's way darker and imho the orcs and dark riders are creepier in it. You should watch them marching to Isnengaard, if that doesn't send a shiver down your spine I don't know what will.

  • Wow, this cartoon is so wrong.

  • haha! arn't these parts of the cortoon movie of LOTR from in 1978? haha! the gay part was hilarious

  • lolz.

  • This is great compared to the Rankin/Bass Version.

  • Hahaha I have to agree

  • wow...i think youre the retard hirschfelder.

  • You're the retard, gamergrl90210

  • great come back...way to prove me wrong.

  • Lol noo your a comeback!

  • @hirschfelder STOP IT YOU TWO, YOUR TEARING THIS FAMILY APART!

  • Good one.

  • they look cute here

  • Oh I wish in the life version of LOTR They had put Tom Bobdabil Somewhere in there. As you can see I liked the character very much. He was the light and happy side of LOTR although it was very brief. lol

  • Interesting thing about Tom Bombadil is that he doesn't have much of an origin...which has made some wonder if he isn't an incarnation of Iluvatar himself...which would explain why the ring makes him laugh. There are other theories of course which are fun to think of. Part of the legacy that Tolkien left behind.

  • hes a dragon in the form of a man.

  • that adorable hobbit that was excited and the other one

    are kinda cute

  • It's what happens in the book pretty much. The sing to keep themselves happy because the wood seems dark and dangerous.

Then they run into some elves.

    And Tom Bombadil.

    And some Wights...

    All good fun.

  • ....What did they do to Sam...?

  • is sam special?

  • Oh he's special alright.. .. short bus special

  • Me go sir? Me go and see the elves??!!!! OH MYYYYYYY!!!!! OhhhHERRRAYYYYYYY!!!!!

  • What the heck?

  • wtf

  • Sam looks like Ann Widdcombe.

  • Comment removed

  • What I will say in positive review of the movie is that it actually stuck to the book REALLY well, with minor variations... but that's as far as the good goes.

Possibly the worst and least entertaining form of LOTR I've ever seen, and that's considering video games, movies, books, AND comics. (Yes there's a comic).

  • I think this movie is okay, the technique used are awesome and it doesn't need disney-quality to be good. But I don't really like Sam's character portrayal , I never got the impression he was like THIS in the books >_> (and I know Peter Jackson & Sean Astin's Sam aren't exactly like the books either but hey, they made him respectable!)

And btw, I like gay hobbitses ^_^

  • LOl! Well summed up my friend.

  • Lol epic cartoon

  • "Me go sir?! Me go and see the Elves?! Oh my! Oh hooray!!!" *marches on* lol

  • frodos voice is just like elijah woods

  • That cartoon rocked!

  • they are officially cabbage patch kids on crack. am i right?

  • You annoy me.

  • I MEANT it was the best technology available - Yes - Disney is the winner historically. If anyone else were to attempt to take on LOTR in 1978 they would have probably chose animation. There was no 3D back then- TRON was the first "computer animated" feature, but that's nothing to write home about. Man, you kids need to learn to lighten up a little - It's just a film, but lacking or not, it was a lot of work. Analog is not afforded luxuries like interpolation. Hand painted/12 per second.

  • Oh my god, I'm never going to get over this...XD

  • I saw this in the theatre in 1978 or so, and sorry boys, but it was the best that technology had to offer back then, and it was quite inspiring and LONG for an animated feature. It is the work of Ralph Bakshi. He was a pioneer of rotoscoping. This is way before 3D animation mind you,and this film was responsible for casting many a youth into the world of D&D - with dice and pads of paper-those are ancient tools of the trade now. I still have all of my hand-painted lead figures. They are tiny!

  • The BEST?! Movies from 40 years earlier than this had better animation, backgrounds and character design.

  • @kipptumor SWEET!!!

  • My gosh, this sucks like crap. -.-

  • I mean 0:17-0:18

  • OMFG PAUSE EXACTLY AT 0:18!!! XD XD

  • yanks yoay eh? if it aint yipped up o meth or coke it MUST be "heterosexually challenged"

fuck off yanks and stop screwing up the world as your big fat greedy ases go!!!!!!

    the whole world HATES you!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Poor Sam they made him into one of the ugliest people in the film. So funny though!

  • Actually, within the way Sam is acting and the way the hobbits are dancing down the road, this follows the book probably more than the newest movie's do.

  • 1. I don't believe that the author intended for sam to be a retard

    2. I also believe that the author didn't make hobbits gay

  • So.... Do you people honestly think that Lord Of The Rings started out as a live action movie?

    .....seriously?

Do you people even consider for one second that the three Lord Of The Rings novels by Tolkien date back to 1954, and are completely different than the live-action movies which were made nearly 50 years later?!

The movies are not the first thing to come along. Not by a LONG shot. Wow.

  • Um, I think people realize that KaramXprod.

No one commented that they didn't know there was a animated movie.

  • I remember this. I watched it in school.

Weirdest animated movie I've ever seen.

Also the gayest. Yet strangely entertaining.

  • OMG. WOAHHHHHHH I CANT STOP LAUGHING....I MEAN REALLY. WHATS UP WITH SAM?!!!!!!!! the "OH MY, OH HOORAYYYYYYY" part....wow....

XD I'm not even going to comment on the rest...my stomach hurts from laughing so hard

  • lol i laughed so hard at "gay hobbits" lol XDXD

  • Ooooooo Hooray!!

  • It looks like they're high

lmao this movie was a major part of my childhood ;P

  • Why the hell did they make Sam a goofy retard with comedy teeth?

  • Why are some of you people comparing this to "the movie" or "the film". An animated cartoon IS a film, you dimwits!

  • O.o no comment..

    omg..

  • haha omg i laughed so hard

  • lael, i'd like to see that :d

  • What a gay little midget.

  • rofl

  • It doesn't matter if you compare it to the film or not.

this is just horribly made with even worse voice acting.

  • WHAT!? How dare you!? The Lord of the Rings cartoons are the greatest ever. Granted I prefer Return of the King and the Hobbit, BUT STILL. Fiend.

  • @NuculurSplosion Is Return of the King the one I was thinking of when I bought this? By Rankin and Bass? With the song, "Where There's A Whip, There's A Way"? I get so mixed up with these - especially since they don't especially follow the books well. Anyway, It's been YEARS since I watched that one, and I refer to all of the animated versions as the Hobbit or LOTR! LOL

  • I can tell this was posted by someone spoiled by Lucasfilms and digital effects. So quick to dismiss the artistic efforts of Rings fans in an earlier age. And I question whether you have read the books. I rather doubt you have, or you would have known that Samwise was accurately portrayed in this wonderful film. I loved this film as a kid and for your mocekry of it I wish all the arrows of the Red Hand band to rest in your bosom.

  • @sagebrushpatriot Yeah, It's been a long time since I read them but I always thought Samwise was supposed to be more simple-minded and sweet (which I thought was still apparent in the newer, live action films as well). I still like the Rankin/Bass efforts, even if they aren't as accurate. They made me want to read the trilogy! They probably watered things down so that children could watch without being "too" scared. :)

  • the peter jackson films are based heavilly on this early spanish version ( look at the part where the 4 hobbits hide from the wraith under a tree and you'll see what i mean). without this, the jACKSON FILMS WOULD HAVE BEEN CRAP.

  • I agree that the movie was better, but even Peter Jackson left out some things as well. But when I was a kid, all I had was this movie, and the Hobbit cartoon...it started my whole Lord of the Rings craze. I love this cartoon

  • Oh HOORAY~~~!

  • It's more like the books then the movie. And from the coments here you can see just how few has actualy read them.

  • That may be the case, but it's worse as a film (and the changes it does make are so arbitrary that it makes the story harder to follow.)

  • You do know that this toon came befor the movies right? (It came out in 1978) But I do agree that it is not as good. But on the other hand Peter Jackson himself said in an intreviw that he watched this toon for inspiration and if one reads the book before one sees bouth movies you can see exactly what he "borrowed". Also its quit intressting to see who made the voices in the toon version:

    John Hurt as Aragon

Anthony Daniels (C3P0 in Star Wars) as Legolas.

    And so on.

  • The thing is, some things that work perfectly fine on paper come off as silly on screen. If you don't believe me, watch this clip again.

  • what teh fuck xD

  • This is such a terrible film.

  • This is a classic, i watch this all the time. It was made in 1978 and is still awesome.

  • I HAVE THIS MOVIE!

I watched it as a little kid who grew up on a small island on the west of Canada, I watched it also with eggnog, days before christmas, saying I'd olny have a small glass, when really taking two big ones, I watched in a saburban beach house on the sunchinecoast, while I was backed at 1:30AM in Powell River,

RAining HARD, your front yard is a beach, your backyard a forest of wonder...I'd explore both of them with my best friend, Izeah, my dog.

  • @bopatoonie I love your description of such great memories! So you probably associate this movie with the holidays. That is so cool. :))

  • Shame on them. Sam's ten times the man they'll ever be!

  • wow

  • hilarious the retarded samwise!!!!!!!

  • it rocked

  • actulay the cartoon is based off of number one adn number two of the books it was created before the block buster hits even though it is a bit cheezzzzzyyyy i recomend real fans atleast rent it its quite wroth 2 dllrs in my aspect

  • Haha!

  • Haha Sam is hilarious. Hoo raay!

  • Geez, what's with all the homophobia here...

  • omg sam is fruitcake....haha very funny tho

  • hihi, Sam looks like an old lady (and he sounds like one too!)

"Me, see the elves? Oh, my!" xD

  • Pause at 00:17

  • I agree. Sam looks so ridiculous.

  • LMFAO!

that actually made my day =D

  • Good 4 ya

  • Gandalf:EGGROLE!!!!!!!!

  • Lol!!

  • theres worse stuff in the cartoon than that...

  • The tavern scene in Bree... some freaky junk

  • This is a classic. and 30 years old Bakshi cartoon. Those who find it gay or weird are just ignorant :) sorry sad but true :)

  • TRUE!

I'm glad I'm not the only one.

  • man, i love and hate ralph bakshi. this is one of the more respectable projects he was involved with.

  • oh the film is gay not the cartoon

  • there was a cartoon before there was a movie, you know

  • Sam rules and that first scene rules too!

  • Dude don't talk crap about poor Sam. He was uneducated. And herro, its just a cartoon!

  • why do you hate peter jackson only cuz this movie? he dident make this version idiots

  • lmao i had a tape on this movie! i laughed so hard at that scene

  • Jackson is utter shit compared to this.

  • What a pile of crap. "Me see the elves?" Tolkien would have turned in his grave...

  • i got that lol its funny as shit

  • 00:17 Sam looks REALLY POSSESED!

  • Ive got this on DVD, and its worth a look. Very wierd version, but its got some really cool animation/ live action mix. I bought this out of curiosity for like 5 bucks, but im glad its in my collection.

  • Haha, I saw this film, it's not very good. Legolas' voice actor also plays C3PO in the Star Wars films which I found hilarious..
