I guess the people who made this film know nothing abour monasticism. But this is not a moral fault, just a case of ignorance. I suggest you investigate monasticism further ... you will likely be surprised and gladdened by what you find.
@j426s73 I figure the maker knows nothing about monasticism - but I figure it wasn't made to offend. So I believe some people should lighten up a little. I just wonder if the creator of Popeye goes and researches the real effects of Spinach on Sailors or if the creator of Spongebob researches talking sea creatures?
lighten up everyone... for goodness sake... I'm sure Our Lord has a sense of humour ... afterall, he created US! ... but on a serious note ... try and see the movie "Ostrov" ... meaning "Island" ... a russian movie of a monk ...
well this was entertaining. Actually, if one listens carefully , there is a good message here. Silly perhaps, but one would have to be rather fragile to be offended by this clip.
If many modern-day Evangelical communities would do some research into their authentic Christian roots, we would not have such ignorant videos as this one.
@thatoneshowguy I was mainly referring to the significant impact that monasticism has had (and still has) on Christianity throughout history up to this very moment. I was not insinuating that anyone is an idiot, although I may have been a bit harsh (forgive me). Moreover, I'm all for personal relationships with Christ. But I'm also for "communal" relationships with Christ. And sacramental relationships with Christ, especially. Such relationships have been ideally illustrated by Christian monks.
I'm not sure if this was insulting to Orthodox Christians, but it was certainly insulting to the intelligence. It's just the kind of vapid, worldly drivel one expects from evangelicals.
If I were you I would not make fun of monastics! they are martyrs in their own right by giving their lives to prayer and fasting. we truly need their prayers!
too annoying for words- i managed to watch to the end, to see if there was a valid point this video was trying to make- but im afaid any 'point' was lost in production- my rating of this video?- YUK!!!
Very well produced and thoughtful; Not disrespectful to Orthodox Christian faith. Sounds like fool for Christ, albeit a Chinese one!
Did everyone watch it to the end? Relevant! Pointing others in God's direction is all that's asked of us. He will do the rest. Although, it's not us- it's God in us doing His own work!
God bless them, and let's us Orthodox keep our sense of humour! We have seen the true light, we have recieved ... etc.
So let us stand!!! (As St. Paul puts it! - 1 Cor 16:13)
@katherine3486 Keep spreading the word so that G-d may invade everyone's soul and nobody will be capable of independent thought. That's the ultimate ideal! Yes! G-d, please invade my soul and consume me from the inside out so that there won't be anything left over to rot in the ground when I finally die!
Bro' the crazy man ...you are, not the old monk on the mountains...
If you know nothing about christianity, and specialy the oriental one - the eastern orthodoxy, you know nothing about real life... Wake-up...! Your end is coming!
For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (2 Cor. 4:6)
Are these people truly "on fire for God"? We cannot judge. But we have witnessed the truth for two thousand years.
"Abba Lot went to see Abba Joseph and said to him, Abba, I fast a little, I pray and meditate, I live in peace and I purify my thoughts. What else can I do? The old man stood up and stretched his hands towards heaven. His fingers became like ten lamps of fire and he said to him, If you will, you can become all flame."
This is a disrespectful depiction of monasticism. American religion is defined by American consumerist culture - the churches are even built like warehouses and office buildings.
I find this offensive. Christian monks and nuns have been praying for us for centuries. I would encourage you to explore the lives of the holy men and women rather than mock them.
A few things: the dude in the sunglasses is an obnoxiously horrible actor. As annoying as the monk character was, the man who portrayed him in said annoying fashion wasn't bad.
Also, this is clearly made by Protestants, who, Christian though they are, are theological heretics. Talk of once being "fired up" for God and seeking a spirituality like that reduces God to nothing more than an "experience".
Blessed more are those who do not see, and yet believe are words to live by.
I am pretty sure that this is supposed to be taken light-hearted. You people need to calm down. Their intentions are to make a point...not portray the life of a "real" monk. Geez, people need to stop taking themselves so seriously.
"A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones." Proverbs 17:22
Yeah - Sturmwaffen - um not even close - what are you implying? That the maker of this video is just like the Pharisees? Teaching false doctrine for selfish gain? Your assumption couldn't be more off...if it is what I think it is...this is a light-hearted skit using humor. Come on.
