Turret side - it looks to me like 17 pdr APDS but the pot sabot has not separated from the penetrator before impact. However due to the short range KE retained was enough for the 37mm diameter core to penetrate the turret armour.
While everyone talks balls, if you bother to read the test results from the time, the hardest hitting tank gun of WW2 was the 17 pounder as fitted to this Valentine Archer.
@SvenTviking it was just the "hardest hitting"....omg just the best gun from brits of ww2 not the "hardest hitting" from ww2 itself. that thing is lightyears from kingtigers fine barrel away ma boy.
This test is useless, look at the British tank firing from 200-300 meters, of course it's gonna penetrate, but in real combat from 1,000-3,000 meters, the Brit tank has no chance, it can't penetrate from such a long distance. Before the British tank got within 1,000-2,000 meters it would be shot to pieces by the Tigers KWK 36 L/56 88mm gun.
@haiherosner I love how German fanboys allways assume that German tanks are camouflaged and allied tanks are coming at them. Usually it was like that but when allies had the suprise advantage germans had their asses kicked hard.
Egzample? For every M-18 Hellcat lost 3 panzers were destroyed. The real problem with Archer was that it never got a chance to prove its worth. Germans prefered attacking US troops becouse they knew that Brit defense lines are much more solid.
When thi tiger came out there was no tank that could penetrate its armor, about 6 month after the british army made the firefly (american sherman with bigger gun)
but even the firefly could only penetrate it from close range while the tiger coud blow a sherman from miles. The bad thing about tiger was the low numbers and high costs.
@EvilFingers: Most likely 6 and 17 Pounder APDS rounds (Armor Piercing Discarding Sabot). You'll notice that some of them even penetrated the front nose and driver's plates (100mm thick).
As for he Frontal Armor, I doubt it was pierced by a 17 pounder, since the soldier didnt use some sort of rod to demonstrate for the camera that the Armor was actually pierced.
tiger tanks took 200 direct shots and made it back, most ran out of gas then were destroyed, only allied thing that could kill em was an airstrike....
It is intereesting that some seem to imagine that most othersa don't recognize the tactical advatages of the tigers massive armor and powerful gun. But there are as many tactical disadvaytages such as fdinding bridges strong enough and wide enough, providing adquate fuel and ammo and getting the Tiger to the Front ready for combat without out breakdowns.
What is interesting is the close range used to test the 17lb. the so called finest allied AT weapon of the war. Yes it got penetration but this is not at 2500 meters like the tiger was known to do to Allied tanks.
It's about 400 yards, which is average for most of the fighting in central Italy and Normandy. Following the fall of Caen in late July the fighting did move into open country and both Archers and Fireflies scored kills on Tiger Is at 1000+ yards. eg, Tropper Joe Ekins a Firefly gunner who knocked out three Tigers in a row at 1000yrds during Op Totalize.
1st this tank has a strong kanon and i am sure armor piercing shels..
2nd the two tanks are maximum 200 meters away from each other at this range everything destroys everything this stupid tank would be knoked out at 3 kilometers! so we know the tiger is better
The Tiger is still very well known. And how is that British crap "tank" called? Does anybody know that piece of shit?

Hull front: 17 pdr APDS complete penetration. Ditto superstructure front.
Hull side - 17 pdr APC (?) complete penetration.
Turret side - it looks to me like 17 pdr APDS but the pot sabot has not separated from the penetrator before impact. However due to the short range KE retained was enough for the 37mm diameter core to penetrate the turret armour.

Awesome Video, but what has me confused, what Gun was used to create the Hits on the Tiger's Turret?
Please dont point out the Hit on the Side Armor, I already know that was from a 17 pounder.

now now boys.....
the archer's gun definately could penetrate Tiger 1 side armor, flat vertical plates.same gun as used in Fireflys.

Indeed, Tigers were not invincible and many were destroyed but they could knock out an Allied tank at long ranges

Was the right side hull blown out as a result of penetration or was it cut away?
Great video for footage of the Archer anyway.

The Tiger was built in August 1942 or earlier. Witness the antenna mount at the rear corner.
The stowage bin on the turret is odd, it's from a later time.
The ivory-coloured framework exposed by the missing side panel is just the normal ammunition bin.
