@Farmerboy986 - The original face from the first Ernest video, made from soft, red (only color I had) modeling clay (non-hardening). It was spray-painted over with grey primer. I tore it up while experimenting.
@TheSI3DRemakist - Yes. Get enough Sculpy III to take an impression of the Bachmann face. Remove Bachmann face plate, re-style features to your liking. Harden this Sculpy III mold in the oven. Once it's hardened, pack the impression with Sculpy III, and pull it out. Presto, one face in the style you designed. Harden said face in oven; install on model.
@cudak888 ok, I think something that is used for smaller face creation would be good too, I have alot of models that have paper faces, a bit of a nightmare to replace :P
hey, for the smaller white beads you used, are they pretty small like 6 mm diameter or what because I am planning to make an eye mechanism in an LGB Stainz. if not oh well.
One could conceivably paint the face in any color they wish - though a primer (of any color, preferably a primer closest in lightness/darkness to your intended color) would be advisable as a basecoat. A satin or flat clear topcoat would be wise to add over any gloss colors.
The camera is an unspectacular Canon ZR25MC. Very limited settings (but it does do 16:9 and has a pitiful manual focus), and the resolution is anything but HD. On the plus side, they run around only about $50-75 on eBay, and they're quite hardy (cassette release mechanism is its only major mechanical weak spot).
This is amazing, Kurt! I can't hear anything since I'm using the library's internet with bum speakers, but this is awesome! Just seeing Ernest looking around is already making me think if switching to G Scale. If you have time to make a vid showing how you duplicated the TV Series Eye servos, Just think of what'll hapen next! Soon, every single Thomas modeller will have Thomas rolling his eyes or James looking for someone to show off his lovely red paint to: all I can say is great Job on Ernest.
If you mean "how much would this cost" - one is looking at about $75-95/ea for the R/C parts (assuming the transmitter and receiver are bought at a used discount), not including the cost of the locomotive itself.
Probably quite easy. Far as I know, the eyes do move on these units, which means they have to pivot on something - that's a start right here. There should be ample room to fit the mechanism under the shell.
What's that red lump at 0:57?

Nice tutorial! Since you said this probably wouldnt be good for small scales, what would you recomend for small scale?
TTTEandbigG 9 months ago
@TTTEandbigG - Never tried doing so on small scales before. You might want to check with user Simerski on that.

Was just wondering, would this method work if I'm making faces for TOMY/Trackmaster trains?
ryanlim2002 1 year ago
@ryanlim2002 - Unlikely. Sculpy III isn't that workable in small scales.

@cudak888 Ahh. Alright. Thanks! Great work!

Stunning work Kurt, and very inspirational for some projects I'm working on!
Keep the vids coming!

is there any way to clone the bachmann models faces and change the expressions somehow?

@cudak888, woah never thought of it like that, i might just have to order some Sculpy III

will it work for a Hornby B12? it's basicly medium sized between Hornby Gordon and Bachmann Gordon

@crazyracer12 - HO/OO scale? Unlikely that you'll get anything to fit, but you can give it a try.

That face could almost pass for the real thing.
Good video. :-)

Would this work for HO/OO models too?
ThompsonLine 2 years ago
Probably not. Sculpy III isn't that receptive to small adjustments.

is it all right if the face was painted white than grey primer?

It has come a long way and looks amazing! The quality is great too!

I think you'll find that G-scale, in general, is cheaper then O (in the States, anyway) - though the selection in the former is limited by comparison.
There will be an eye mechanism video soon enough; I'm just not convinced that I have the mechanism perfected yet.
Thanks for the nice message :D

how hard do you think it would be to fit the eye mech in a G- gauge bachmann thomas?

is sculpey 3 avalible in the uk?
class47peter2 2 years ago
It certainly is - do a search on Google for "Sculpey III UK" for distributors.
Mind you, it isn't necessarily the only suitable product for the task; it just so happened to be convenient and cheap (and it works).
