Piracy is not even close to stealing. Lets look at it like this. Would you rather not have something and the, lets say artist, dont get anything. Noone gains anything. 2. You get something but the artist gets nothing. you gain something while the artist gains nothing. It doesnt even make any sense.
Piracy is not stealing. When you steal, the original is gone. Pirating just makes a copy. Imagine someone steals your car, but it's still there in the morning.
Research shows that people who actively download music/games buy more of the previous then their not downloading counterparts. Also: overly complicated anti-download measures on works usually increase downloading of stuff
Piracy is stealing! Take for example Adobe Flash. You pirate it (get a cracked version). You just STOLE a $700 piece of software. Explain to me how that is not stealing. It doesn't matter if Adobe is a huge rich company. And that "making a copy" argument: taking someone's money is stealing, obviously. Does that mean making copies of is alright? Of course not! "That's the way money works" Well thats the way digital information works!
Does that mean stealing a car is not theft? Its not the original, its one of the hundreds of copies of it. When you buy software, you're not paying for the software. You're paying for the right to use it. Pirating over the internet is the same as stealing the software from a store. It hardly costs anything to burn it onto a cd and put it in a case. You don't download any blank CDs do you?
No when you steal a car it is lost to the original owner. When you would (if it were possible) download a car the original would still be there for the owner to use. Pirating over the internet would NOT be the same as stealing it from a store. Burning cds is for old farts.
The developers own what they make, they can charge whatever they want and no one's forcing you to buy low quality software. And that statement is way too general.
But when you steal the software from a store, all you're stealing is blank CDs and a case. The rest is equivalent to pirating. And what about money? Taking someone else's money from someone is wrong obviously, does that mean making copies is ok? Of course not!
Adobe missed out on $700 only if you were prepared to pay that ammount in the first place, had piracy not been an option. If a 15-year old kid downloads this suite, this is almost never the case.
In fact, this "free" exposuree to the product makes some people more likely to buy similar products (from the same creators) once grown up.
I agree that people should be honest with themselves and pay up if they like the product and it is within their price point. But I also believe they shouldn't deny themselves the pleasure if they can't afford it or if it isn't licensed where they live.
Material goods carry replacement costs. If you shoplift, it costs the store to restock the item (as well as any potential profits lost for the item). Unless the store is about to throw out the item, it stands to lose money even if you never intended to buy the item that you stole.
If a person downloads software that he couldn't afford, nothing is lost. Some of those who did actually buy the software will find it unequal/unfair, but that's about it.
The thing you don't understand (in the case of software piracy) is that you aren't paying for the software itself. You don't own it. All you own is a single license to use it. Yes, a license isn't physical - it's just permission from the company. But that permit is worth money, be it 99¢ or $1000. It doesn't matter that the licenses available are infinite. You're still stealing the right to use it.
The piracy equivalent for cars is making yourself a replica that resembles a Mercedes from custom-machined parts, NOT stealing one from a dealership, as the MPAA wants everyone to believe.
I believe that people should still purchase creative work that they like (there's no such thing as a free lunch), but this ad compares apples and oranges.
That's just how digital information works. You're not paying to have the song, the movie, the software, you're paying to listen, to watch, to use it. Don't the people who made whatever it is deserve to be payed when you take their song/movie/software and enjoy it or benefit from it? The music and movies sell is because people enjoy them. People benefit from software.
You are right in one sense since you can't compare buying a car to buying a song, you don't own the song, you are really buying the right to listen to it (or watch the movie).
You wouldn't copy a car you'd never buy anyways, you wouldn't copy a handbag you'd never buy anyways, you wouldn't copy a television you'd never buy anyways, you wouldn't copy a movie you'd never buy anyways. Movie. Piracy. Is not stealing.
No shit piracy is a crime. It's not stealing though. It's copyright infringement. Two different things and it's not like things like this will stop anyone.
Downloading or piracy whatever you wanna call it, doesnt cause half as much damage to the music/film industry as reckoned. Most of the stuff I have downloaded ISNT anything I would have bought. If i really like an artist I buy the CD for several reasons. Same with everyone else i know.
Well, over here (uk) they will make your service provider cut you off if you download music/vids. So im downloading everything until the enforcements come in.

Look at the details in my profile to find out why piracy logically doesn't hurt anyone (the character limit makes it too hard to type out here).

Now if a person walks into a movie store, finds something and thinks to himself
"I'll only buy it if I can't find it on pirate sites"
then there is a problem.
However, this only happens in a minority of cases.
As long as people are honest in this respect, downloading won't be a problem.

Theft -> Removes the original.
Gross Commercial Copyright Infringement -> Copy the original then sell it for profit.
File Sharing -> Copy the original then give it away for free.
Piracy -> Stealing shit on the high seas

What should be a crime is the low quality standards of software now a days and the ridiculous amounts of money they want you to pay for it.

You could say the same about "normal" stealing.

That's like sneaking into a movie theatre, nothing is lost, does that mean it's OK?
mk123600 2 years ago
And when you make copies of money, nothing is lost right? So it's OK?
mk123600 2 years ago
If everyone can get into a theater for free, there soon won't be any room left for the paying customers. There is a finite amount of seating.
However one can pretty much make an unlimited number of copies for the freeloaders without affecting the paying customers.
Flare400 2 years ago
As long as you don't use the conterfeit currency to buy items, you don't dilute the currency.
If you say, use these bills as samples for your own collection, the society isn't affected.
