I don't know if their "sympathy through a technological interface" is correct all the time.

I avoid beggars, not because they are "below" me, but because I am weary of professional panhandlers that make more than some blue-collar workers. I'm much more comfortable donating to a program that only gives to those in legitimate need.

I would keep in mind that part of the success of the robot is due to its novelty. As weeks go by I can only imagine that people will get bored of it, and if they were to be seen on every street corner than the police would throw them out just as easily as they would the real beggars.

It looks to me like it could be made for practically nothing. You could probably top of the line it for under 100 bucks, but I would estimate you could build it for 10 bucks or less.
