i saw them live in Frankfurt Germany back in 70's and i can see myself on the album cover in the audience that was taken there. i'm in about the 3rd row. awesome time for sure.
Depending on my mood, either this or White Sun is my favorite from the Doobies. But you can't really go wrong as long as you're listening to the Doobie Brothers. Peace.
Yes i agree whole heartedly that the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame are missing ALOT of TRUE artists!!!
I can't even begin to list them all! They need to let the PPL that actually BOUGHT the music vote, not just a few narrowed mined arrogant ass-holes!!! Thumbs-up if you agree!
@75tm400 I think their bass player here is Skylark...he was really ill a few years back...hope he pulled through and is okay...great great bouncy bass line, nice counter melodies
THIS SONG IS THE BEST DOOBIE BROTHERS SONG.. I SAW THEM IN CONCERT IN FLORIDA AND THEY WERE GREAT.. SOUNDED JUST LIKE THE 70S.....IT TAKES ME BACK TO A MUCH SIMPLER TIME ......
Tom wrote this apparently with a heavy heart. Sorry he went through the rough times back in the day, however I'm glad for it all. He's alive and well and I can listen to this every Sunday, and remember the "good things that slipped away"!
RIP Mom, Dad, Sister, and Bro. Love you all.... Thanks Tom, now I'm gonna have to go get a few kleenex tissues and "Get myself together".
My favorite Doobie Brothers song...I was in my 20's when this came out and I still feel the same way when I hear it now..all kinds of feelings........
Brilliant! . . . this reminds me of my brothers and friends and neighbours jamming this song at my mums house, all drunk and happy, great mems. . . this is the best version I have ever heard, Tom you are the best.
Thank you Cottonbuds!!! Love me some Doobie Brothers, just another awesome song from a totally awesome band!! Peace, from the desert in Tucson Arizona! Memo
Tom Johnston wrote this song, but it's Patrick Simmons' guitar playing that makes this one of the best live versions of this song I've heard so far. Why this wasn't a big hit is a mystery to me. My all time favorite Doobie song.
@sirwob I sympathize with what you're saying, but I kind of think it was Ted Templemans fault. He got lazy and put McDonalds overmixed vocals and congas on every damn song. Even Mike McD's solo stuff had more guitar on it than the latter day Doobie songs! Plus, in the live shows Michael's role is much more subdued.
@bbacko They didn't include this song in their set a few weeks ago, but the set list may vary, It was also outdoors and close to freezing! In any case, I'm sure it'll be a treat, no matter what they play.
aren't we so lucky to have this? up for a treat? come to glen ellen in sonoma county and see them play at bruce cohen's winery. promises to be a day to remember
Got to see them perform in Scottsdale, Arizona last Wednesday night -- man, it was near freezing under this big tent and they put on coats and rocked for about two hours non-stop. They were great 35+ years ago, and are still great now. Thanks, guys, for the experience and what you've given from your hearts and souls to those who can appreciate all you've done. What a treat to experience them live.
@75tm400 No, they're two different people. Porter quit the Doobies in 1992 and hasn't played with them since. Skylark has been the Doobies bassist since the mid 90s although he recently suffered a stroke and is sidelined indefinitely. Porter and Skylark also have two distinctly different playing styles.
@Marckymarc71 Take it easy dude, it's a honest mistake that other people have made as well. You sound like one of those know-it-all people that can't stand giving other people credit for anything.
Man that dude on the bass gets busy in this song. If you really listen good to the bass It's AMAZING ! Lead guitar is AMAZING too @ 2:36 - 3:11. Love this song :)
@75tm400 When I had the album I knew it was Tommy's song and I thought that he had played the solo. I realise it was Patrick now seeing the live version. It makes sense to think about it - Pat was always a bit more subtle and melodic whereas Tom was always a more aggresive "rock/blues" soloist. Their work together and their contrasting styles is what makes the Doobies so wonderful.
@75tm400 You got that right. Many groups have benefited from the diversity of their composers, either working together or contributing collectively to their songs. The total effect is indeed greater than the sum of the individual parts. Just watching all three guitarists, you see much of the time they are playing independent riffs and chords -- getting that all to blend together so well is where some of the artistry truly comes into play.
Great music will always stand the test of time. I mean who remembers Bros or NKOTB now? Doobies, Eagles, Steely Dan, Boston, Journey. Just wonderful music. At least Paul McCartney is still with us - The Beatles were the only band that evolved from a boy band into wonderful music - they were and always remain unique in that way
@reeblite You're welcome -- Got my ticket today! :-) Can't believe I missed them last year, but this will make up for it - first time ever to see them live even though I remember well when Toulouse Street and The Captain and Me first came out.
@DDZZ55 Doobies will always be in our hearts for beautiful music. The Tom era and the Mike Mac era were both awsum. But personally I love the era 72 to 76. "Vices and Habits" was their best album because every song was a classic although "Captain and Me" came very close. Both albums were just sublimely brilliant.
@DDZZ55 Hello yes man I was a pro guitar play from the age of 20 to 35. Got a sensible job in an office to save me from diying of alcoholism. Got to get up in the morning now man! I am 45 but kinda wanna pick up my guitar again. The Doobies were such an important part of my childhood and I think this was just about my favorite. I cry every time I listen to this. Such happy childhood memories of my father and dear departed uncle Marty jamming on guitar by the camp fire in 75. Happy days also sad
@DDZZ55 Do yourself a favor and buy (not copy), but _buy_ the DB Wolftrap live DVD that this is from and spend a couple hours reliving the concert in up to 5.1 surround sound. You'll not regret that treat to yourself.
@50starbaby Hey man one of my favorite Doobies songs ever - "The smile on his face, dont you know it's hard to replace, bet he's gonna live to be a hundred!". Only have the vinyl copy of "Vices and Habits" but will try to post it. Keep the Faith and the love man XXXX
Great song. Brings back memories of a high school breakup. These guys are some of the best musisians and song writers. How can this band NOT be in the Rock & Roll hall of fame. What 's up with that !!!
@lmh2mnexs --Ditto. Except mine was all thru College and ...I e-mailed her last nite. It's been since 1974. Still in love with that woman after 36 years ! It'll never happen,...but it is a good illusion. "I'm Just trying to find me a pretty smile that I can get myself into"
Wonderful song. I instantly go back 30 plus years with the intro notes.
The Doobies are so deserving of HOF status. SO many great songs. So many harmonies. Great lyrics. Great sounds (intro to Jesus, China Grove, etc)
Have seen them perform 4 times at the Forum in Los Angeles - always a fantastic concert - no studio band here! Saw them for a New Years Eve concert - awesome!
I purchased this album while in college and always marvelled at their arrangements, rhythms and vocal blending. Their music seems so perfect and pure. I have seen them live twice and found their live versions always had something extra and entertaining. Would love to see them live again, soon and also would like to see them in the Hall of Fame, NOW.
Tom Johnston's voice sounds fantastic. Hossack's drums are spot on as usual. John McFee's guitar work is flawless. Who's the guy on bass? He was awesome. Pat Simmons has the most mellow sounding guitar riffs I've ever heard. The Doobie Brothers are, without question, the most underated rock band ever.
I have an album on Pickwick of their original demos (I now find out was illegally released and subsequently pulled from the market-valuable?) that includes the original version of this song, "I'll Keep on Givin'". Love the Doobies, check out all their live videos if you haven't already. "Clear as the Driven Snow" is especially amazing. I'm going to listen to it right now.
Great song...but me thinks the background vocals are overdubbed later... perfect pitch at high harmonies by a bunch of old guys in a live setting...that's asking a lot! :-)
this is the song that you listen to in your convertible ...top down, sunny day.... they are coming to Lake Tahoe mid-june with Chicago and I'm going to miss it!
These guys have perfect vocals. Wow. Great song.

Have seen them perform 4 times at the Forum in Los Angeles - always a fantastic concert - no studio band here! Saw them for a New Years Eve concert - awesome!

Brings back some great teen memories. All are excellent musicians. I can not believe a proven band like this is not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

On the choruses, is Pat singing in unison or perhaps an octive lower than Tom's melody?

This song reminds me of a friend that I lost in time...he was the sweetest guy. Told me this song would always remind him of me.
Albert, I think of you and wish I'd stayed in touch with you...you were my friend.
Wishing you only the best...we were so young in San Jose CA...remember the Monitors and the fair?

Great voices, great music, great mixing all well blended into a beautiful tune. They remain strong and original after four decades.

Great song...but me thinks the background vocals are overdubbed later... perfect pitch at high harmonies by a bunch of old guys in a live setting...that's asking a lot! :-)

Russo is OK but Cornelius Bumpus was the best. May he rest in peace 1946-2004.
