Wrong.. The civil rights era was a power struggle not between two different entities - dems and repubs. It was between northern dems, southern dems (Dixiecrats), and republicans. It was democrats that fought against civil rights - Robert Byrd, was a KKK member and he is a democrat. JFK was very hesitant to pass any civil rights legislation to begin with based upon the fact it could was a career killer.

Believe it or not most of the civil rights legislation involved supreme court decisions.
