The best way to ensure that no hedgehogs are living in your bonfire is not to build it until you are about to light it. It doesn't give them time to get a surveyor in and arrange for the moving van etc. Of course this means that your garden will be strewn with branches and cuttings all year, but there's time to plan for that.
