  • @JesSyNaesthesia Unfortunately, it is the story of too many children.

  • Does anybody know what the song is called?

  • Disney loosing it's touch?

    MY ASS!

  • @XGiftedGamerX This isn't recent. Its from when The Little Mermaid was made. .

  • This used to be my sister's favorite story and she would always ask my mom to read it to us.I,on the other hand, would beg her not to cause the moment the story started I would burst into tears and wouldn't stop for hours.Watching this proves I've learnt nothing.

  • "My candle burns at both ends; It will not last the night; But, ah, my foes, and, oh, my friends - it gives a lovely light."

  • As things get bad, they can aways be worst. Great down to earth story. Much Mahals/Love.

  • B'awww

  • This is the most tragic story my childhood self ever heard, I cried like a baby, and I still do.

  • And that video just showed me how lucky I am... Kinda makes me ashamed of how I live, heh...

  • i knew i shouldn't have watched this before going out, mascara everywhere.

  • This video is beautifully done. This story always makes me wanna cry. :'(

  • this and the lion king two are the only disney sequels i actually think are close to being as good as the first though the first are always better oh yea and toy story othe than that sequels like th ejungle book two and cinderella two etc kinda sucked to me but i adore the first versions of all disney classics

  • @booob011235813 Of what is this a sequel?

  • this is so sad </3

  • i defintely need something cheerful now, that was heartwrenching

  • That was...So sad...I think i'm gonna go watch something funny now...It was an amazing short film, don't get me wrong, and I suppose it's ok, since she was techniquely 'saved' in the end, but...Yeah, i'm just gonna find something to laugh at now...

  • i've never seen someone so sad but so sweet before. it shows that even though she had nothing and she was alone, she still had imagination and hope...its inspiring and heartbreaking..

  • This is based off an old Hans Christen Anderson tale of the same name. It's still very sad.

  • Don't we all wish we could go and get her everything she needed?

  • i would buy all her matches, give her shoes, food, a place to stay... GOD, DISNEY, WHY?!?!

  • No matter how hard I try, I can't watch this without crying

  • Oh poor little match girl...

  • NINE PEOPLE HAVE NO HEARTS.

  • @Caterfree10 yeah :)

  • I'm not crying... it's just raining on my face

  • I've read the original Andersen version, it's much sadder but Disney definetly proves the magic is still there.

Becasue this made me cry, and I didn't even notice until afterwards. I was THAT captured by it!

  • i remember reading the story as a child and now as a 19 year old young woman i'm still crying like a baby. beautiful story

  • II'm wiping the tears off my keyboard now :') Proper scrunched-up-face red-eyes runny nose crying. And I'm 22.

  • I remember watching this on my Little Mermaid DVD and crying my eyes out. I forgot all about it until now (it just popped up under suggestions) and I thought 'oh it can't be THAT sad, I bet I don't cry this time', and let me tell you I'm wiping the tears off my keyboard now :') Proper scrunched-up-face red-eyes runny nose crying. And I'm 22.

  • What a sad but heartwarming story, as the li'l matchgirl is reunited with grandma,...she died because of the cold,....sniff, sniff,.....thumbs up to ya DisneyPrincessIsrael and thankin' my buddy betterworld for the AWESOME share! = )

  • @qualqui Sad story. You should read the original Hans Christian Andersen version. It's a lot more darker than this one.

  • @montanerfan10 thanx for the tip,....i'll look into Hans Christian Andersen's version.

  • neva eva seen such heartbreak video before..

  • The pussiest six minutes in my life.

I could not stop my teary eye right form the beginning.

  • such a beautiful masterpiece. que bella obra maestra.

  • Roy Edward Disney, you've done it again!

  • A nice little heartwarming tale for everyone to enjoy in the winter season. Simply great.

  • makes me cry every time...

  • it's ... really sad :'(

  • Shit! I always manage to get teary at the end. It looks as if things are alright when you realize what a bittersweet ending it is. Just like life at times.

  • Exquisite. I'd love to see it in high def.

  • Beautiful.

...so how long before Disney makes a sequel?

  • This Christmas story has always been a part of my childhood, I will never forget it. Whenever I think of Russia, this is the first thing I think of.

But I've never cried until the first time I saw this Disney short and heard the violins..

    :,(

  • This is pure masterpiece ,

great, beautiful and very touching , everything , the story , animation and music ^^!!

  • Warms the heart

  • I LOVE BORODIN!

  • If I was in the film, I would buy all her matches.

  • This prove that Disney hasn't lost its magic, they just need to focus on stuff like this.

  • @SuperDogbiter

Too bad Disney is just doing another story without due credit and claiming it as their own. They're notorious for that. Google for Kimba the White Lion (most prolific one), Little Mermaid and a few others you can connect to classic stories (which I won't harp on them for, as they're classics).

The point is: their shit movies are the ones they write themselves and the good ones are based on great classics (like The Little Match Girl).

  • @vinnybastos She did freeze to death. She joined her grandmother in death.

  • The music is called string quartet no. 2

  • I dont know why but at 1:19 that prat really made me sad for her i mean she really

want to have a real kind family that cares about her and love her....T.T

  • 'sheds tear'

  • 7 people have hearts of stone...

  • @fireoutlaw23

Eh, who knows- maybe they gave it a thumbs down because it made them sad? *shrug*

  • Thumbs up if you found yourself shedding tears at the end of the video.

  • MY EYES MUST HAVE CAUGHT SOMETHING....EXCUSE ME....

  • i must say the music is amazing! who's the composer?

  • @lovedwallflower it's "this is my beloved" from Kismet.

  • Comment removed

  • @lovedwallflower This is "Nocturne" from Borodin's string quartet in D. I cry every time I hear it.

  • "...for every laugh there must be a tear..."

    - Walt Disney

  • @Grymbaldknight what a great quote, and very true

  • @lostpinguin

absolutely....even being the 16 year old male that i am i found myself crying by the end of it - i don't think anything so short has made me cry so much =(

  • 6 people like Hannah Montana, Jonas Bros, High School Musical or Wizards of Waverly Place.

  • Beautiful.

  • this is so sad because from 2:28 she is actually starting to die

  • I cried when I read the book

  • I cried. Such a heartbreaking story :'(

  • I cry every time I see this. It's been awhile though, since I couldn't remember which Disney movie it was attached to. I wouldn't have guessed the Little Mermaid! Thanks for posting it! I love this short.

  • The first time I saw it I didn't know about this story and my heart was yanked out of my chest when the Grandmother walked off with the child and they both turned into spirits. I cried my eyes out.

  • My mother told me this story when I was 6. Father abuse and all. I thought it was a beautiful story. It is still one of my favorites to this day. And my mother telling me the story has become one of my most precious memories.

  • heartbreaking to watch, but truly beautiful.

  • The moral of this story, is that there is nothing warmer than a grandmother's love.

  • You know what makes this so hard to watch for me? My maternal grandmother died when I was a young child.

  • awww thats soooooo sad but yet so happy ~bangs head on desk crying~

  • what a beautifully sad little story

  • she kinda looks like little-mulan

  • @disneyitsasmallworld cept shes russian or german

  • watching this breaks my heart...

  • such a sad story i going to continue bawling my eyes out now.

  • Doesn't this just breaks your heart?

  • I liked it, but I didn't cried. I cried a lot more when I read the story

  • okay i gave just a few words to say....I WILL NOT CRY I WILL NOT CRY I WILL NO...AHH HELL I'M CRYING...this is a sad little story

  • I remember watching this. It made me cry......Still does. *Wipes tears*

  • i can't believe disney created a short film for the story of the little match girl

it's one of the most, if not the most, upsetting, tragic stories i've ever heard.

i can't help but cry every time I see this.

  • wish disney will make movies like this again...

  • I always cry when I watch this,I cant help myself =´(

  • ;_; so sad

  • From a place that claims to the "Happiest Place on Earth" they do try there best to make us depressed.

  • @firetasteslikebacon Haha, I hear you. (Disney has an evil side. Does not surprise me at aaaaall.)

  • Disney... please make Snow Queen! Your Hans Christian Andersen movies are probably your best.

  • alright i hate to sound stupid because a lot of people seem to be touched by this story

    but i'm somewhat unclear

did the young girl die at the end

  • Yes.

  • yes, she died. The woman in the dream was her dead grandmother.

  • I want my grandma.

  • Thats so sad... il cryed !

  • i don't get it...

  • The original story is written by H. C. Andersen, a danish famous fairytale writer who lived in the 1800's.

He has written more than 150 fairytales including "The Steadfast Tin Soldier", "The Snow Queen", "The Little Mermaid", "Thumbelina", and the "The Ugly Duckling".

  • when I was little I didn't understand this and I thought it was boring....now I love it

  • The story line is so touching yet so real... many people lived like that and I think the reason we're all sad (without knowing it) is because it was christmas and that we take it for granted

  • excuse me, i seem to have something in my eye!

    :'(

    so saad!

i would of bought her matchsticks!

i would of taken her in!

    :'(

  • same here

  • That's so touching ... poor baby ç_ç

  • If I was there, I'll certainly buy all her matchsticks...

  • This is a classical German fairytale(story)

  • Correction: this was written by Hans Christian Andersen, a Dane. Though I'm sure germans loved it too :)

  • she die in the end?

  • yes. When her grandmother picked up her spirt you can see her body sitting on the ground. Very sad:(

  • Yeah. I'm guessing to join her Grandmother who had also died, which resulted in the homelessness.

  • @KaiuKun don't make it very clear in this vid does it that she dies

  • It's implied with the ghostly exit and the little body that remains. <:( So bittersweet.

  • The story implied that if she returned home without selling the matches, her father would beat her. Her grandmother, who indeed had died, was that last person her truly loved her. To die was a blessing...but such a bittersweet one. The next day, people found her little body half buried in the snow, the handful of burned matches in her hand...they knew she had tried to keep warm by lighting them. That shame was overwhelming...such a beautiful, yet heartbreaking tale.

  • how does it imply that her father beats her?

  • @Xolrules2 In the book, it actually says along the lines of "She wouldn't dare go home without selling the matches, she feared to" It's also in the times of when beating a child was completely normal, especially below the poverty line.

true fairytales are actually quite dark, even the original Little Mermaid's feet bleed as she danced and she did not get the man and died at the end.

  • @Musemistress Tch. Excellent point. (And yes, it was because her father was going to beat her if she didn't sell the matches. And, also, in part, we can thank the people passing by heedlessly who ignored her.)

Ironically, Disney has done so much to help fool people into thinking fairy tales were always happy and pretty, but we really shouldn't be surprised when they show us their other, truer nature.

  • @Musemistress

This is a truly story, not an imaginary one. H:C:Andersen grew up extremely poorly and he lived in the street as a beggar. The little match girl could have been his own "street-mate". I'm ashamed for all children that survive in this unhealthey conditions and without love. Einstein said that west civilization was in decline and I think it's absolutely true.

    Best regards.

  • @Musemistress I am to believe the father was arrested.

  • @Musemistress where is itimplied that the father is there?

  • @hellsgothic in the original story. I don't know many fairytales that were actually happy stories...they were told to children to warn them of the dangers of the world and kids love being scared, but it takes the art of those fairytales to soften the blow a little and make it work for a child.

The father in this one was mentioned very briefly in the story, but it was done enough that her being frightened to go home was explanation enough.

  • @Musemistress where was the father mentioned could you perhaps point it out to me

  • @hellsgothic Well, they can't show the father beating her.........that'd be too graphic for Disney. :/

  • @kakashidemon321 i realize that but thats not what i mean give a time in the video that hints at a child-hood beating

  • @hellsgothic it doesn't show it in the video, but it does in the original story. the short is based off a fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen.

  • @Musemistress Well, I kinda shall disagree even though you do make a point.

I do believe she sold some of the matches since she had so little of them before she fell in to her fantasy world and drifted away.

  • @Musemistress

Plus she was 5 years old

  • @Musemistress Some 'child friendly' versions have her live, I have a copy of the story where she is rescued by a wealthy, elderly woman who saw her almost frozen to death and took her in.

  • Yes.

  • poor little matchgirl TT^TT

  • Excuse me, I must have something in my eye...

  • Everything I say is too little to describe the beaty of the film! I totally mean it!

  • this story and beautiful dawn animation never fails to make me cry

  • I played this string quartet. perfect music for this story.

  • so sad i could just cry my eyes out literly

  • This is so depressing. ;c

  • oh... so sad... true to the fairytale... and just as heartbreaking...

  • where is this it looks like russia

  • @tazz2070 yes this was set in Russia.

  • i love hans christian andersans work!!! a true master piece!!!!

love's: little match girl, little mirmaid, girl with red shoes, snow queen, ugly duckling! everything he writes! :)

    this made me cry

  • Spelled Mermaid

  • @MM2Brown o kay! sorry for my spelling error!

    :)

  • aww she freakin dide :¨( poor lil girl but.....she frikin made me cry :¨´´(

  • Man.... poor lil' girl :'( but she's whit her grandma now....Man I'm an 19 old guy and i feel tears in my eyes.......this is so touching..... Now one should be left alone... :(

  • Hans Christian Anderson is such a genius. Best fairytale writer ever and I'm glad that Disney has used a lot of his best work. But I'm still waiting on "The Snow Queen." It is rich and dark and the message behind it is ultimately very Disney-ish.

  • you got your wish my friend! we all got our wish!!

Disney is going to make the film! It was lost project in 2002 but now they are interested again!

This time it will come in 2013 or 2012, and the best is yet to come!-- It will be 2D animated!! Yes!! :)

  • I can't believe you. I'm very gullible so whatever people tell me I automatically assume it's true (mostly) but I went to google it and you're right. YOU'RE RIGHT! AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Thanks for the great news. It's... I think I'm going to faint. *doing a stupid dance now*

I can't believe I'm an adult now and I'm going to be holding my breath until the next Disney cartoon comes out. Freakin' Snow Queen!

  • The greates thing about all of this:

    1) Snow Queen will finally get the Disney treatment it deserves

    2) 2D just made the come back man!!! Yes!

    :)

  • Next step, proper Disney musicals like the good ol days :)

  • Should this be made into a Disney movie for children? I made I'm crying right now and I'm 20, if little kids saw this, I think they'd be sobbing.

  • actually I don't think so. Most people don't really start crying about movies 'till they're like 20. And besides, all animation doesn't have to be oriented to kids.

  • @Drakesverd I have been crying during movies since I was eight so u are really under-estimating the complex emotions Kids can have, but yeah adults like cartoons I'm in college and lovin' the cartoons still. And incase anyone didn't realize it if u pause at 5:41 up to 5:43 you can clearly see the little girls body being left behind. But what I was always told was the little girl was French not Russian...

  • @MewMercury the little girl is not french or russian. in the original story she is danish.

  • @Drakesverd ...Um. I'm sorry, not to nit-pick, but I distinctly remember getting teary eyed when I thought Beast died. And I was, like, six. Maybe, -maybe- seven. 20? Most people? I mean, that's fine if that's you, but...I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume you're a guy. Because that generalization makes me fairly sure you've never gone to a teenage girl's slumber party. xD
