Everytime Brody slides inside, I always forget that Quint didn't know about the shark and goes out, I always found it to be like he has that look on him, that he knows this certain shark.
My reaction would have been the same as Brody's except one addition: "You're gonna need a bigger boat and, I'll be back in just a minute, gotta change the ol' undies real fast.
John Williams music is just amazing during this whole sequence. The whoosh on the harp at 1:21 just amazes me every time. It completely captures the audiences stunned amazement of the shark and then the powerful forceful string section right after it which brings in the shark full force. And the choice of the overhead shot to amplify how big the shark is. It is all BRILLIANT.
Notice Brody's cigarette isn't lit when he jumps back in fear but when he backs into the cabin and delivers the big line, the cigarette is smoking. Little continuity errors exist in every film. NOTHING can diminish this great film though....... except if some schmuck producer gets the bright idea to "reimagine" Jaws. we all know it's coming, don't we?
@StoutProductions I think that was because this was uploaded from an AMC broadcast and they had to edit out the original wording that you remember from the movie. Yes he does use the term you remember.
@jaxl2009 I agree. This shark looks a hell of alot better than the computer animated ones off deep blue sea! Of all shark movies, this one looks the most realistic.
@darthhvader Actually the word was "chum" not chomp. If you carefully watch the movie and listen, the explanation of "chumming" is actually described by one of the peripheral characters earlier in the film. That's what makes Speilberg such a great director. Little lines of dialog or little visual clues exist early in his movies that predict something later in the story. Another example is in Close Encounters. Someone whistles "She'll be Comin' round the Mountain". At the end.... SHE did!
the movie is a classic....with a great plot and story telling ...for its day the special effects weren't bad either... it definetly sold me....but what I was dissapointed in that it did not live up to the novel...the book was more gory in detail and the ending was altered...If they ever do a remake I would like to see the books version
instead of hollywoods version ...The novel was far better than the movie and if it was done correctly it could be another masterpiece
@DunlopDaytona Heck yeah! How many of us still get the 'willies' when we swim in the ocean? I've been a 'shark fan' for decades now & I KNOW they're not that dangerous but still...when I swim in salt water...it still gives me the creeps.
@DunlopDaytona youre right mate it scared the life out of me when i was young watching this with the family around the tv ! and actually i think the special effects were amazing for its time , if you watch any cheap shark movies now the effects are computerized rubbish !
LOL yep because we all just have hundreds of grenades lying around us at all times. But then it becomes the choice..which one which one Depleted uranium, Frag, WP, thermite, Flash Bang, smoke
Quinn 'Mr hooper..... I'm not talking about hooking no dogfish or dazing on a boat cruise, I'm talking about working for a living, I'm talking about sharking!!!!!'
You know , for me, that is part of the charm of this movie. I don't need for the shark to be ULTRA real. In this movie it just feels "like a shark" it gets the job done. That's all i need. The rest of it is left to the brilliant cast. I think if you are a hard core fan of this film you love Ol Bruce just as much as Rick Roy and Robert. (Opinions?) He is part of the lore and the history of JAWS. Its just slightly flawed like everyone is. That makes it perfect
@carig12, they used the music to anounce the arrival of sharkie more out of dispear that the shark was not working most of the time, was the best thing after all, even more susspence now, you hear the music, you know he,s comin but you don,t see him and when you finally do it scares you even more ,brilliant ,as brilliant as the simple music itself "tum tum tummm tumm tummm ";-) At first Speilberg said"that,s it ? haha .He and the producers thought the audienc would laugh during the whole movie.
Great ! It stinks that the original words were edited - I know that, some people haven't heard the word " shit ", yet, but it' is still a great scene ! I've NEVER looked at the sea in the same way that I did before this movie came out.. Thanks, Spielberg, for thirty years + of ruining my ocean fun, from St. Thomas to Rhode Island !
@krizan1 The "shit" was "turned to "slop" in this "Jaws" clip because it was from an AMC channel airing of the film. It was dubbed all over for language because it was on TV.
Look on youtube for Harry Enfield's 'Badfellas' sketch - a brilliant, humourous example of how TV channels ruin films by attempting to cut out any swearing in films.
From another site: And a special thought for Roy Scheider — who left us all on Sunday February 10, and is now somewhere in all-that-jazz luminous paradise — just because of his best scene in Jaws (why do we only remember the "You're gonna need a bigger boat" ad-lib line?).
Still, I don't know for sure, but this is what I heard many years ago. Who knows.
This is one of my favorite movies. I just watched it again and I think Scheider says "You're gonna need a bigger boat". Not "we're". But still, one of the best ad-libs out there along with "Here's Johnny!" from The Shining. Superb movie, Jaws.
John Williams score just makes this. It is so incredibly powerful and moving. Film scores today are whimpy excuse. Nobody else knew how to give the audience a real.. MOMENT. So few films today have any real moments
Oh dont even get me started. Its my favorite film bar none. My all time favorite moment in the entire film. Just the sense of excitement, the build up, the HUNT finally starting is at 1:35. Seen it a 1000 times and still love it.
When i saw this film on its initial release in 75 the moment when Hooper runs down the ladder 1:36 and the shark hunt basically begins was one of the most exciting moments i have ever experienced in a movie. To this day when i see that scene it still gives me a chill of excitement.
That famous line "You're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat" from Police Chief Martin Brody, was ad-libed from Roy Scheider. Screenwriters Carl Gottlieb and Peter Benchley wished they would come up with a line like that, but Scheider beat them to it.

This film is mega amazing made me laugh how they have changed what Brody says its been dubbed over when he says come down at chum some of this shit ! to something else 0.20
Actually the first time the shark appears is when the guy gets eaten on the 4th of July weekend and when chief Brody comes racing to his son Michael cuz the shark is coming his way.
You're right, and it's even a better shot because we see JAWS swimming just below the surface of the water...whereas this one (which is still a great moment) has the disadvantage of looking a bit mechanical. Still one of my favorite movies though. I don't care that the eyes of the shark don't roll back or the gums don't expand to reveal the seraded teeth. It's a near perfect horror-out-door- adventure film.
My girlfriend & I saw Dreyfuss at the DMV & I raised my voice & said You`re gonna need a bigger boat . We spoke to him briefly & he let us take a couple of photo`s . He was very gracious
Well lucky you,I've NEVER met any celebrities in my life.I just wish that just once I can meet one of my favorite celebrities in person, but I won't count on it
@LordGandor you know, in other movies of Dreyfuss they refering to Jaws , Like "what about Bob,"where Murray say to him on the phone, that he knows where his vacation is, on Martha,s vineyard(where jaws is filmed) or in an other movie where he himseld say, you gonna need a bigger boat .while he,s on a steak out . He was also great in Close encounters;-)
Everytime Brody slides inside, I always forget that Quint didn't know about the shark and goes out, I always found it to be like he has that look on him, that he knows this certain shark.

Oh yeah there's no denying that bro.
Brody:"Slow ahead,I can go slow ahead why don't you come down here and chum some of this shit!"
*Shark appears,Brody jumps in shock*
Brody:"Your gonna need a bigger boat." Classic scene and still one of the most memorable lines in the movie :)

My girlfriend & I saw Dreyfuss at the DMV & I raised my voice & said You`re gonna need a bigger boat . We spoke to him briefly & he let us take a couple of photo`s . He was very gracious

It says "you're gonna need a bigger boat" not "we're gonna need a bigger boat". One of the biggest misquotes ever, next to "Luke, I am your father".
