as for tibet's status in 1898, i believe that it was de facto independent but still under the suzerainty of china. 6 years later, younghusband led a small invasion into tibet, not china.

Read the Sacred Art of Tibet. It is an interesting book about art and it includes art that is over 700 years old that is from what is now politically China. You're a bit confused man, 1954 they were taken by force. Calafornia wanted to be part of America. Tibet was taken by force. Now lets just think, if your country was small and it was taken by some other country by force! That's a no no!
Similarly, if China were to invade the now Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, which it is said to covet, that too might be called a reinstatement of sovereignty, since it was once seen as part of Tibet. Or Mexico might consider invading the southern USA states! Still, if Tibet had the freedom of true autonomy and China respected Tibetan culture there would be far less of a problem.

Don't forget HH Dalai Lama always said he's NOT seeking Independence of Tibet because his status was endorsed by the former Chinese govt---Republic of China. He was born in Qinghai, a Chinese province. Since 700years ago, when Tibet become part of the Chinese family, many Tibetans moved to lower lands of neighoring Chinese provinces. If Tibet to be Independent, they all have to moved back to Tibet!!
Reinstatement of sovereignty (it had been suzerainty) is history swinging the other way. If Tibet were to become free, it would be a reinstatement of Tibetan sovereignty. Just as Qinghai(Kokonor) had been under Tibetan, Mongol and Chinese rule at different times before it became a Chinese province 7 years before the birth of the Dalai Lama.
Qinghai is a province that is Tibetan. The CHinese stole it! So is much of Sichuan, Yunnan, and others. well xizang (tibet) belongs to china now. China has authority over this region now. No use for those tibetans to complain. I have been to Hawaii twice. Slept in the homes of the natives. They loved me as I did them. They want better conditions but they are not being tortured and their rights not violated so it is less of a parallel than you are tought to believe. Go there for yourself and support a native in their craft and they will be openn to speak their mind as long as you are cool. In China this is not so. all wrong? i stated that hawaii lost independence in 1898, and only became a state 60 odd years later (1959). that by this time tibet was not controlled by the long gone qing dynasty but that china did control tibet. is this all wrong? of course not.
as for tibet's status in 1898, i believe that it was de facto independent but still under the suzerainty of china. 6 years later, younghusband led a small invasion into tibet, not china.

(what the usa supports or not has little to do with truth.) i was referring to when hawaii lost its independence to the usa (1898). at that time tibet was de facto independent. hawaii became a state 60 odd years later (by which time china has taken control over tibet but when the qing dynasty certainly controlled nothing; it was long gone!)

The reason why you never heard about a Free Tibet before recently is because Chinazi gov't is VERY good at controlling information to suit their political aims. Read a history book banned in China and you will see that Tibet was NOT always part of China just like China was not always part of the British empire. Read the Sacred Art of Tibet. It is an interesting book about art and it includes art that is over 700 years old that is from what is now politically China. There was no significant Han Chinese presence there then. Its seems like a funny source but if you question things like I do you take your info from many sources. Peace.

Similarly, if China were to invade the now Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, which it is said to covet, that too might be called a reinstatement of sovereignty, since it was once seen as part of Tibet. Or Mexico might consider invading the southern USA states! Still, if Tibet had the freedom of true autonomy and China respected Tibetan culture there would be far less of a problem.

i realise that a major early catalyst for the problem of tibet was british (and possibly russian) interest in the territory unsettling the china, from whose protection tibet had been benefiting. i do not think the problem is simple at all. i also think that the "political forces against china" argument is an oversimplification, and sometimes a smokescreen.

When I travelled through Tibet, every humble Tibetan I met expressed faith in the Dalai Lama. He's their symbol of freedom, not the Chinese regime. (I'm also uneasy about Comayli's appointment as spokesman for 1.2 billion Chinese in China!)

The so-called invasion of Tibet is actually the reinstatement of Chinese sovereignity of Tibet. Don't forget HH Dalai Lama always said he's NOT seeking Independence of Tibet because his status was endorsed by the former Chinese govt---Republic of China. He was born in Qinghai, a Chinese province. Since 700years ago, when Tibet become part of the Chinese family, many Tibetans moved to lower lands of neighoring Chinese provinces. If Tibet to be Independent, they all have to moved back to Tibet!!

Reinstatement of sovereignty (it had been suzerainty) is history swinging the other way. If Tibet were to become free, it would be a reinstatement of Tibetan sovereignty. Just as Qinghai(Kokonor) had been under Tibetan, Mongol and Chinese rule at different times before it became a Chinese province 7 years before the birth of the Dalai Lama.

Qinghai is a province that is Tibetan. The CHinese stole it! So is much of Sichuan, Yunnan, and others. Just because the PRC drew an arbitrary political borer doesn't mean that the indigenous people there are Han Chinese. THEY ARE TIBETAN. And the Panda bear is from the Tibetan part of Sichuan-NOT CHINESE. SO get your own symbol for the Olympics. That one belongs to another culture!

Comayli is right that the Chinese govt will never choose to free Tibet. However, Tibetans and those who support their cause (many millions worldwide, not "2000"!) have every right to campaign for a free Tibet. True, California was taken from Mexico (+ before that the whole of North America cruelly taken from Native Americans). This does not make right the far more recent Chinese invasion of Tibet from 1949 onwards.

well xizang (tibet) belongs to china now. China has authority over this region now. No use for those tibetans to complain. Sure they can complain about it but it isnt going to get them anywhere. it is the tibetans fault that they couldnt defend their own land which probably is a good reason that they shouldnt be independent anyway since they might get conquered by another nation.
