Citigroup Inc. on Wednesday agreed to pay a $285 million fine to settle civil charges brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission that it sold securities backed by mortgages that it simultaneously bet against.
The regulator alleged that Citigroup Global Markets structured and marketed a $500 million collateralized-debt obligation that was backed by subprime loans, and then bet against those mortgage-related assets, which it didn't disclose to investors.

Image all these financial CEO in their underwear. Do they look so smart now? Image them all wearing black and white striped jumpsuits. Would they look like a Zebra now? Use your imagination and you will, eventually, find out.
how come FNC does all big banks collateral analysis except for Citi.... I cant find any investor relations about which company does this. It most likely does not exist.
oh thank you Mr. citi bank man.... Lets keep globalizing.... funny how your stock price went the lowest before they started the bailout. The one where the southern republicans were forced to revote on and pass in a matter of days. No No the banks need more money we are going to fail. Credit is drying up and you cant get loans.
this motherfucker is with the Illuminati. This was the bank that went the closest to failing but got bailed out. This liar was placed in before the staged show we saw on t.v. The banks dont need bailouts.. They have all they ever need and more.
I love the clichés [oozing with sarcasm]. "We're helping globalization" is his way of saying, we're helping expand the market so that worker's rates become so frackin' low that they eventually have to work for free or not at all. Then they'll HAVE to come to us for loans because WE'VE got all the money.... Lord help us if they can't pay it back, but... it won't matter. Once they're indebted to us, they'll be our slaves"
Vikram Pandit is a smug punk. I don't care how old he is or how much money he has. Even if it is not from your salary, how can you possibly accept $10 million a year in compensation from anything having to do with your company when it is failing?
The most fundamental question of all: What is the underlying law of nature.
As the way of all things, what effect do you suppose its question, knowledge, understanding and application by billions of persons would have on the state of global economics, science, the humanities, education, government and business?
@gfkleopa I agree on that, he is a total cunt, most of the Americans lost their home and jobs because of him. That's why I don't advice my friends and families to get a CitiBank Card. Finally, Screw Pandit with a broom stick.
"you knw what a bank does Charlie" it fucks your ass n makes sure that you are knee deep in debt till you die..and squeeze every penny out of your ass,n they call this "financial planning"
CITIBANK, AIG and the other corporate criminals have been laughing all the way to the banks they own.
BOYCOTT CITIGROUP, AIG, JP Morgan Chase and anything related! If you ever want integrity in the markets again.
Charlie Rose is the best interviewer and has a great show. He unfortunately failed in this softball interview with this corporate criminal from Citibank!!!
@vivecan2005 your a fucking idiot. America begging? The U.S. government gave Citi $306 billion in loans and securities and directly invested about $20 billion in the company. Who the fuck looks like a beggar? Like I said, You are a fucken idiot! Get your nose out of Pandit's ass, you jerk! Pay the taxpayers back, until they do, they will be in the shithole, where you and Citi deserve to be.
Your last name should be Hogson. The US Government paid 306 billion from where, through Printing Money on paper? Where the hell Govt which is deficit for last 10 years got 306 billion? Why would they bail out if only Citi was responsibile? Govt knew clearly that things that are happening are outcome of COLLECTIVE MISTAKES made by both the Government and Banks. Why the hell govt was smoking Newport Box for last 10 years while these things were in thier embryo form?
@vivecan2005 you are in denial! You must be related to that idiot Pandit or are shareholder losing money. Do your homework!!! Citi got themselves in the shithole and has failed their customers, shareholders and the U.S. Taxpayer. Wake up loser and face reality! Citi is a sinking ship!
@vivecan2005 February 27, 2009 Citigroup announced that the United States government would be taking a 36% equity stake in the company by converting $25 billion in emergency aid into common shares. By the way moron, Citi issued credit cards is responsible for around 40% of the profits with GCG(Global Consumer Group) and represents the largest issuer of credit cards across the world. And you say they dont make money from credit cards? Damn dude you are embarrassing yourself!
mainmanchuck! Your mother must be drinking when you were born. The "40% profilts" where the hell this data came from? Do you think really that SUPER SUPER MEGA BANK's 40% Profits can be because couple of million "Joe the plummer" own credit card of 4000 dollars on which bank is getting 34 Dollar 25 cents as a interest?
Pandit is most famous for his hedge fund, Old Lane. He sold it to Citi for $800 million, then he became CEO of Citi. Then he had to bail out Old Lane out with $2 billion of Citi's money (or was it taxpayer money?).
All I can say is, Pandit must have some really good dirt on some of the members of the Board.
Interest would be "earnings", not "savings". If you don't have the money on your person, you're less able/likely to spend it. It's secure/insured while deposited. Who's going to give you your money back when it's stolen from your house? No one. Putting your money in a deposit account DOES help you save money. Earning money from those deposits is another thing entirely, I agree.
Helping the world globalize? This cocksucker takes taxpayer bailout money and repays us by raising credit rates to over 20%, cutting jobs, denying credit to people who have always paid their bills on time. I cant wait until this jerkoff and Citi fail, You can bet it will because this asshole has not learned his lesson. problem is we will be stuck bailing these clowns and this idiot will somehow find another place of business where he can fuck up again.
The foundation of the banking instituions is wrong, banks should NOT BE PRIVATE, but an institution for the BENEFIT of the ppl who use its service watched by gvnmts
No excessive interest rates/betting games but STORE the money for the people and loan some out at FAIR RATES. All profit that would be made should be used to benefit society, not to make people TRILLIONAIRES.
If the power of making money was taken out of the claws of these central banksters, there would be no poverty or hunger!
There are no "trillionaires" denominated in USD at least. BTW, there IS a central bank and thats the FED in the US. So what you are proposing is to GIVE the money to the central bank rather than banks operated by private entities. BTW The government is Horrible at operating businesses, just look at USPS. BTW what you are suggesting is socialism (please look at pre collapse Soviet Union to see how that has worked out)
BULLSH*T!! BANKS are kool - It's the Tricky MOTIVES of the Ceo's of Banks that's the PROBLEM - BANKS are in business to MAKE MONEY PERIOD !!
At the end of the day on a $100 Thousand dollar home [for instance], PRINCIPAL & INTEREST- Total paid for home is over $230 Thousand dollars - WTF?? that's just one home - OMG! don't OVERDRAFT your account [Former Bank Employee]
Citi Group is not on the brink of default & destruction. Good. Hopefully Bank of America, AIG, Wells, etc. will not be far behind. What is this crap about "too big to fail"? There's no such thing. Let them go & teach these greedy execs about humility. They're not only responsible for the company's destruction they also managed to wipe out the life savings of millions innocent hard-working families. That kind of loathsome greed is incomprehensible. Pigs.
If Americans were real Americans the gallows would be in service 24/7 and Mr. Pandit would first grow a few inches taller and then take his business underground.
I heard Vikram will pay himself $1 per year with no bonus until Citigroup is profitable again. That's fucking easy when you have millions of dollars sitting in your personal account from previous years bonuses. Fucking twat.
I work at a CITI call center and 57,000 people have been laid off. I worry every day if I am next thank GOD our call center in my city/state has not been effected yet. The company is great and they are 100% customer service oriented. We take a long boring 4 week training and 2/4 weeks is customer service, customer privacy and respect. It worth it I like my job and my customers!
Blaming Vikram does not makes any sense. Citi was in shambles before he joined. He his trying to fix things Citi has been doing for years now. Its like blaming Obama for war in Iraq...I think all the people who blame Vikram for citi should also blame Obama for war in Iraq
Citigroup Inc. plans to spend about $10 million on new offices for Chief Executive Officer Vikram Pandit and his lieutenants, after the U.S. government injected $45 billion of cash into the bank.
Pandit lied about his compensation - he said during the hearings at a direct question from a senator (see the UT video) requiring disclosure of all compensation for 2008 that he got $1M.
He totally lied his compensation for 2008 was over $10M.
This is really terrible interviewing. I can't believe Charlie Rose lets Pandit steer the conversation into nonsensical banter about "what a bank does."
His response on being too big to fail is pure horse shit.
Basically he is saying I can tell Rose anything and he will kiss up. This arrogant little creep announced Citi made a profit in January and February. Of course they made a profit. They cut the work force, quit making loans and had $45 B in our money to cover expenses and then some. Fault Pandit, not Prince. Don't be fooled into thinking these people are all wise and wonderful. They are greedy failures. Rose knew it and blew it.
Got to love this, what has Pandit done that you can say you can fault him on? Name me one thing that he has been very bad at. I can name you a few that he has been good at. He raised 50 billion of PRIVATE money before any other bank did. He has been trying to jettison assets left and right to survive. He has cut costs the most aggressive of all banks. That's what a good CEO is supposed to do. He wasn't there when citi got into all this shit in the first place, get your facts right.
45 billion and the 300 billion asset gurantee was neccessary for the survival of citi. Also, as a result of this, Citi has greatly lowered its exposure to the toxic assets under his tenure. You really should watch his talk at Wharton, this guy is smart, and he clearly knows what's going on and how to get Citi out of it. The issue is, he is not a charismatic guy who is a great leader. He doesn't inspire confidence the way some other CEO's do. But he is one smart son of a gun.
why blame Pandit? Citi was screwed before he joined as CEO... how the hell is he a greedy failure? you saying he has made huge money in an year as a CEO?
funny there are so many armchair critics who lambaste Mr.Pandit for the apparent mismanagement of Citi's assets. First, Vikram Pandit was appointed CEO of Citi after that douchebag Chuck Prince was jettisoned from the top floor in 2007. Secondly, managing the largest bank in the world with $1.7+ TRILLION in assets is no cake-walk. It's funny to see the plebian masses go up in arms and are waiting for the kingpins to falter when they themselves have no clue how to manage their own limited assets!
why don't you do more research before complaining. obviously you have no idea what's going on in the economy and writes what you hear other people say. Pandit is an excellent CEO, but just got caught up like everyone else did. He already admitted his faults and is on the road to rehab. you wish yo uwere 1/100 as smart as he was.
I actually don't think that Pandit is that bad of a CEO. Think about what he has done, he raised capital before most banks did at a time when he could still do it. He cut costs more aggressively and before anyone else did. He jettisoned the wachovia deal when he realized that wachovia is really crap (case and point, check out wfc's price these days). The only bad thing was that he should have dumped smith barney a lot earlier.. But all in all, not too bad.
what needs to happen and i believe it will very soon.. About 1/2 of American needs to drive to Wall Street and kick some ass... You following me America ? FORD MOTOR CO got its ass kicked back in the 30's by workers tired of being walked on and used. Their pay double after that because they said NO MORE WILL WE TAKE THIS BULLSHIT and actually did something about it.
Yes and those overpaid coddled monkeys are a big part of why the American car companies produce shitty cars and are near bankruptcy. The unions are just as greedy as the companies. But I agree with you that Wall Street needs some serious ass-kicking.
Whoa, man, those are real people you're calling "coddled monkeys". Be realistic, first of all it probably wasn't THOSE people that originally went to Wall St. Also, since when is wage a literal determining factor in quality? It's not. And if someone is to blame for "shitty" cars it's the engineers and designers who failed their employers, not the folks on the line. It's mostly automated, man... they're not nearly as active in the quality anymore.
50,000,000 for a jet bought with bailout money ??? -- and im eating bologna for dinner during the world wide crisis we're having ??? Citigroups lame excuse was "it will save citigroup money" -- The jet seats 12 ppl. Why don't you suit F**ks fly coach like the rest of us. I have to work 15 years past my retirement time now because of you greedy F**ckers.
when some one miss one single morgate payment, citigroup will came back with letter saying we need to pay with late fee + atorney fee+service fee+all other misc feee. WHY WHY gov. paying citygroup.? spent that money to prevent wildlife or for forest preserve ... Atleast wild life can live better ....
WHICH IS THE WORLD'S WAST BANK.....
ANSWER: CITY BANK ..
WHERE CAN YOU FIND THE WORLD'S STUPID CUST.SERVICE PEOPLE.
I agree about customer service, they charged me a monthly fee for my student checking account, while saying that I will get a free checking account. And customer service is really horrible, I realised that twice.
The staff either don't know about the intricate rules or try to confuse you with their ignorance. Happened in both New Jersey and New York.
That guy forgot to swallow. I think he likes Bush in the rear and Obama sitting on his face. Likes a little DP. All the while all of them are high on Meth while Ted Haggard sits in the corner masturbating to it all.
Great interview by Vikram Pandit. I liked it. It's not his mistake Citibank is in the mass. It's was the mistakes his predessor made Vikram has to bathe out.
Wow, Viki just need now a pair of this funny mickey mouse ears and you can't define anymore if its a tv studio or disneyland. "What is a bank do?" lol hmm maybe treat you like a king when you have a lot of money and take everything from you as soon as you can't pay your rent for once? I love the free marked economy, soon i'll give the shirt off one's back for it... damn it
capital shortages accross all sectors, 1-2 trillion debt based on monopoly relationships, multinationals who add no value because they have large transactional capacity with little entrepreneurial supply and demand creation and this guy believe he is at the forefront of globalization
what a disaster all these assumptions about the benefits of financial capital liberalization proved to be for local recipients of industry
Nice rate jacking citigroup, hope you enjoyed the 20 billion dollar tax payer bailout. If you're reading this and they have jacked your rate up, DO NOT humor them, even if they slime out of it by lowering your rate; instead, get a loan with another company and payoff your citigroup card so this sleezy organization doesn't get to enjoy the interest. If people united, this corporation would be screwed...and hopefully others would take notice that consumers are fed up.
You guys realize that Vikram is not the guy responsible for the collapse of Citi. He took over in late 2007. Prince is the douche that deserves the blame.
The financial mess with all the big banks speaks for itself. Vikram was full of slick shit. He did not answer Charlie's question. Big and unregulated business ruins peoples' lives, and their own too. On top of that, dirty politcians and lobbyists help all the way to this disaster.
he won't 'set foot on your floor' since you are the janitor there. Now, when you go up to his floor to wash it, make sure you clean it properly you pathetic sack of shit.
look lady, you need to get your lips off your pakistani friends ass. I am in mortgage collections and trust me, citi is a shitty bank. There is no communication at all. Everyday people tell clients bad info and a lot of times it costs people their homes. Citi does not train its employees correctly. Citi lies to the clients knowing and willingly, I know, I work there. So Ooga, get your dick outta Pandits ass U dumb son of a bitch. If hes doin such a great job, why is citi being ran like shit?
The last verse of: "The Ballad of Pretty Boy Floyd," by Woody Guthrie written in March of 1939. Now as through this world I ramble I see lots of funny men Some will rob you with a Six gun And some with a fountain pen.

By the way moron, Citi issued credit cards is responsible for around 40% of the profits with GCG(Global Consumer Group) and represents the largest issuer of credit cards across the world. And you say they dont make money from credit cards? Damn dude you are embarrassing yourself!

vivecan2005 2 years ago
Pandit is most famous for his hedge fund, Old Lane. He sold it to Citi for $800 million, then he became CEO of Citi. Then he had to bail out Old Lane out with $2 billion of Citi's money (or was it taxpayer money?).
All I can say is, Pandit must have some really good dirt on some of the members of the Board.
jabel5 2 years ago
Interest would be "earnings", not "savings". If you don't have the money on your person, you're less able/likely to spend it. It's secure/insured while deposited. Who's going to give you your money back when it's stolen from your house? No one. Putting your money in a deposit account DOES help you save money. Earning money from those deposits is another thing entirely, I agree.

If the power of making money was taken out of the claws of these central banksters, there would be no poverty or hunger!
stabhappyj 2 years ago
There are no "trillionaires" denominated in USD at least. BTW, there IS a central bank and thats the FED in the US. So what you are proposing is to GIVE the money to the central bank rather than banks operated by private entities. BTW The government is Horrible at operating businesses, just look at USPS. BTW what you are suggesting is socialism (please look at pre collapse Soviet Union to see how that has worked out)

davfoster88 2 years ago
His response on being too big to fail is pure horse shit.
Basically he is saying I can tell Rose anything and he will kiss up. This arrogant little creep announced Citi made a profit in January and February. Of course they made a profit. They cut the work force, quit making loans and had $45 B in our money to cover expenses and then some. Fault Pandit, not Prince. Don't be fooled into thinking these people are all wise and wonderful. They are greedy failures. Rose knew it and blew it.
55Dixon 2 years ago
Got to love this, what has Pandit done that you can say you can fault him on? Name me one thing that he has been very bad at. I can name you a few that he has been good at. He raised 50 billion of PRIVATE money before any other bank did. He has been trying to jettison assets left and right to survive. He has cut costs the most aggressive of all banks. That's what a good CEO is supposed to do. He wasn't there when citi got into all this shit in the first place, get your facts right.
skliu 2 years ago
45 billion and the 300 billion asset gurantee was neccessary for the survival of citi. Also, as a result of this, Citi has greatly lowered its exposure to the toxic assets under his tenure. You really should watch his talk at Wharton, this guy is smart, and he clearly knows what's going on and how to get Citi out of it. The issue is, he is not a charismatic guy who is a great leader. He doesn't inspire confidence the way some other CEO's do. But he is one smart son of a gun.

funny there are so many armchair critics who lambaste Mr.Pandit for the apparent mismanagement of Citi's assets.

Whoa, man, those are real people you're calling "coddled monkeys". Be realistic, first of all it probably wasn't THOSE people that originally went to Wall St. Also, since when is wage a literal determining factor in quality? It's not.
