Explaining music to MOST drummers is only very slightly less a waste of time than explaining to the chick singer but here goes: Colaiuta is ALL percussive ideas--an infinite number of them, in fact--and NO musical ones--NONE! Not one, not EVER. No one can play what he plays (except maybe Buddy, and HE'S dead) but that's a criterion of judgment for weightlifting or the 100 meter sprint, not the arts. Check Al Jackson Jr. or Aynsley Dunbar for drumming which serves the tune & not the reverse.
@dantean Why do so many good musicians hire him then?? I'm a drummer, so therefore I don't know anything about music (although a lot of people I play with say that I play very musically, but what do I know...I'm just a stupid drummer). I hear the same criticism about Dave Weckl too....if these guys are so unmusical, how do they keep getting gigs with people of this calibre.
nah, you've just limited your understanding of what music can be. like someone who objects to creative chord substitution, or reharmonization, or outright avant garde interpretations and/or forms.
Percussion has a voice and therefore a place to speak ... how it speaks is up to the artist.
The World's most accomplished and progressive musicians have said: speak Vinnie, Speak.
Let those who have ears hear... let the rest enjoy their dance music ...
This song is so awesome, and very catchy for a fusion tune. Who is singing on this? Sounds a tiny bit like old Incubus... even though these guys are a different species of musicians compared to a band like that. Vinnie is really classy in this. Perfect mix of shimmery cymbal accents and serious groove.
Stop comparing guys. Each drummer has his own unique take on anything he plays. One day you will realize that. Expression of feel is more important than any one individual note. This piece could be played any number of ways and that my friends is what drumming is all about. I absolutely respect Vinnie's playing. You should too.
Everything you have said here is true including the obvious, that everyone has their unique take on how they play a given piece. That is the main reason Colaiuta is sitting where he is.
@daverow49 I agree. Stop comparing guys. Why? Because VC is the best the planet has ever seen. Sure, B Rich set things in perpetual motion and is the master but VC is the consummate contemporary drummer and nobody can even touch the guy.
@stretch54 I have to say that Gary Novak told me personally that Vinnie is his drummer NO.1 and he´s got all of his records at home ... .but I have to say that Gary is one of the few drummers that comes with his own chops and licks .... and if you´ve heard him somewhere, with Corea, Landau or Henderson or Berg, He´s superfast and got faaaastest, killing odd/irregular chops
hey, yeah, i've been listening to it all day today and shared it with lots of people.
i LOVE Vinnie's solo album and that's pretty much all i know about his music. Is this Jing Chi album good enough to get it? As good as this track perhaps?
....What are you all bleating about over -playing .Did anyone ever think that the composer wanted it that way ?.Anyway, it's mostly all very sparse except for the creschendos ,It's called dynamics lads .
There are only three instruments there ,4 if you count the Ac Gtr The drummin is top!!!And Robben's tone is sublime !!! Sounds like a Les Paul or ?
Obviously Vinnie is amazing, of course but I also think he is very lucky to get away with playing this busy and with many artists without getting blasted for overplaying and still get a ton of pop gigs. If someone else who's name wasn't Vinnie Colaiuta played this busy to this kind of tune they would probably be fired and not get hired very often.
@Monsterdrumma Well these guys are playing a fusion tune, so they can stretch out more. Vinnie gets to play "busier" on his recordings maybe moreso than other guys because he has the ability to play more, but do it in such a dynamic, controlled and musical way. There are a lot of good drummers out there. Vinnie's just a real gift.
@eddy71454 I know that it is fusion, I get the same thing sometimes from people that hear my tracks, but I think there are other people that can play a lot of different styles that don't get as much of an opportunity as him, I think I can play a ton of styles on any level but I would get accused of over playing and I think I play tastefully. I love Vinnie but with Herbie I do think he is overdoing it and I personally don't think it sounds good but his name is Vinnie so he gets the gig.
@Monsterdrumma I listened to your playing and you aren't bad by any stretch. More power to you. All I can say is keep practicing...but don't compare your abiltiy to that of Colaiuta. That's only my opinion.
@eddy71454 All I am saying is Joe' garage came out and then he was on everything, I personally think he should have been, it was obvious he could play anything but most people hear busy or complex and think that is all they can or want to do and his drumming on that record was more complex then most anything up to that point or even to this day so I was just confused how the industry let him slide and no one else who plays in the same vain can do that without getting pigeon holed.
Vinnie is my hero, i know i will never sound like him but i can be as good as he is, because it's about loving what you are what you do, vinnie is so good because he worked for it and believes in what he does, people want everything served on a silver plate, as if it was easy...
@mrthundaboots I've found that they are very clean and brilliant.
They sound great in rock situations like this, but also in smooth jazz or pop. Manu Katche makes them sound very crisp and clean, while Colauita makes them feel more nasty and wild.
It's not the actual notes he plays but the fact that he thinks to play what he does. I think people underestimate his creativity in light of his great chops and technique.
@cpdrumming You are speaking some truth there. Nothing normal about Vinnie, I too wonder where do the ideas come from. Answer 30 + years playing with the Best Musicians on Planet Earth. Genius soaked in Experience. Freaky! Lovely!
No. It's not a rhetorical question. It's a challenge to anyone to name another drummer that can play this part with all the touch and nuance that Colaiuta does.
Chris Pennie could replicate it, but it'd just sound like BA-DA-BA-DA-BA-DA-BADABADA-BA-DA-BA-DA-BA-BADABADA. Which means he couldn't replicate it... really.
You guys that are posting audio tracks with photo stills as VIDEOS really need to STOP THIS SHIT! Its not cool, and your not hip.
